  1. We added three transfers and Sekou Sylla was the most decorated in terms of being a D2 Player of the Year. I certainly overhyped Conway based on his 3* status. The thing about Sylla is that he can be effective against certain teams, but when he takes on a big team like USA, he doesn't stretch the floor. He's struggling to find his way inside against guys who are not 6-5 or 6-6. JD was able to find a way but even he took some perimeter shots. At some point, I'd like to see him show some perimeter skills as he did in that one 3-point shot he made late in the game against Coppin. I think that would create better spacing as well if he can become more of a perimeter player or least attempt a few because he's struggling to finish inside against length.

Cam Holden scored 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out eight assists to lead the Tigers over South Alabama 62-60 in the second round of the HOSTILO HOOPS COMMUNITY CLASSIC. Towson played without point guard Jason Gibson (back) and Radhir Hicks (ankle). Redshirt freshman Ryan Conway got his first start and scored five points, dished out one assist and had no turnovers in 23 minutes. Towson outrebounded the bigger Jaguars 39-30 and to 7-of-26 (27%) from long range. The Tigers took just 11 3-pointers and made four including two on 2 attempts from Nicolas Timberlake, who was held to just nine points. More later...(Yes, the line was 4 and the Jags covered on that three-pointer at the buzzer. The missed Towson FTs late didn't help) PS comments from TSN after the game "Really proud of our guys. Really good USA team who played Oklahoma and Alabama well. We did not shoot the ball that great, missed some FTs. Down 2 quarterbacks in Hicks and Gibson. Defense and rebounding. Holden was like Benimon. Just gifted and versatile guys." "Good night from Nygal Russell. Charlie was a warrior. Really good minutes from Ryan Conway. Good job. His role will grow. The team won 21 games last season. To have a disappointing loss last night and bounce back against what we thought was going to be a hard game says a lot about our guys. Especially being down two players." On 2nd half "We had to focus on execution. Injuries are unfortunate. We shouldn't have played Radhir (Hicks) on Tuesday. Still have guys that can play better. Play tough games. Coach K says you just don't beat a team, but you become a team with tough games because you need each other. Our ball movement defines us. We're fighting it. Ball movement was better in the second half."
  3. But this game was won by Cam. He's such a unique player and you could say, well we don't have a difference-maker in terms of a guy that can consistently put up 25 or 30 points or a guy that can consistently get to the basket. But with Cam, he does it all. As PS would say, he'd drive the bus to the game if he had to. He plays power forward, small forward and now he's basically our point guard. He rebounds, defends, gets dimes and while he's not a great or even good 3-point shooter and has some flaws (FTs), what he's given this program is a kick in the ass. This guy is 6-5 and around 200 pounds (probably less) and has played with a fractured jaw and now torn ligaments in his hand. JB was a better player because had that tremendous size, soft hands and could give you 19 and 10 nearly every game. He's the type of kid we won't appreciate until he's gone because it's more than just an interesting skillset but a desire to win that most guys don't have. The only other worry about him is whether he can keep this up, playing nearly 40 minutes and doing just about everything for this team including running the team as the point guard. Boy, do we need Gibson back on the floor to help the offense.
  4. Not going to dwell on what I saw in this game because we beat a team that lost to Oklahoma by 4 and Alabama by 10 with great size with no Hicks or Gibson. We found a way but our FT shooting, esp. Cam and Charles is a concern, esp. the fact that they are going to get fouled most of the time. NT also struggled again from the line. Missing a front end late and he did that against Penn late in the game. I thought Paar really struggled in the game after playing well the day before. We were up 9 with about 7:30 left. CT had to come out for a breather and not going to blame it all on CP, but he dropped a pass down low, he fouled a Jags player who made the and 1. Just need some consistency from the backup center whether it's Biekeu or Paar. Conway didn't score a lot but let the game come to him. Maybe it's going to take a lot of time or not so much, but while the injuries to Hicks and Gibson hurt our chances to win games, it helps get guys like Conway more than just a few minutes in a game. Cam handled the ball for most of the game so Conway played mostly off the ball. Want to see maybe closer to 50-50 when Ryan is in the game. I know PS is worried about turnovers with Conway and that's he's more of a shooting guard, but he will continue to improve with more playing time. I think his defense has already gotten better. He's not an All-CAA defensive performer, but he does have the quickness to keep up with most guards and the strength to get through screens. He's also deceptively fast. We didn't push it much today but I'd like to see Ryan with the ball on transition more not just Cam or Russell, who played well but took a tough shot on a 3-on-2 attempt instead of passing it. Which is something Russell has not done much. He's been a very unselfish player and without his offense (14pts), we're not winning that game today. Even though they didn't score, it was also good to see guys like Tyler Coleman and Christian May get more time. I think May is going to be a good player down the line and getting some run early can only help. Just needs time to adjust to the speed of the game and the size of the opponents. The speed should be fine for him because dude is athletic and I'd like to see him and Conway play together and get the ball in transition. He is a little like Timberlake when he was younger, though not as raw. Needs to work on his handle and to get stronger. But he has some swag which is good.

https://towsontigers.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/patricia-anumgba/20561 She has a shoulder injury. I think when they get her back, they'll be good. Have to rely on defense and inside scoring (sound familiar?). Nice to see Skye Williams with a big game today. Kornegay-Lucas got in foul trouble and that cost them the Pitt game. Need more from Rivera scoring-wise or at least she needs to take better shots. They lack that go-to scorer right now though they have a pretty good balance. Really like the freshman India Allen and freshman Gabby Scott is getting a lot of starts, though she's been all or nothing so far. I like the fact that we have more size and I think Coach Harper since she played center, will be able to get much more talent in the post.

Towson jumped out to a 10-5 lead early against Fairfield, who responded very well and led through most of the game. The Tigers tied it several times, but couldn't make the big shot when needed. They fall to 5-1, while the Stags improve to 1-4. This was a game where Towson just seemed flat to open up and Nicolas Timberlake continued his struggles from long range, making just 1 of 6. He did finish with 15 points and Cam Holden led with 18 points with five boards. But Towson's poor three-point defense as they allowed Fairfield to shoot 12 of 26 from beyond the arc and 50% overall. Towson shot 44.4% from the field and just 3 of 13 from beyond the arc. Jason Gibson (back) missed his third straight game. Towson will play South Alabama on Saturday at 2:30pm, followed by a game against Mercer on Sunday at 5pm from Savannah. Here are some quotes from Pat Skerry after the game on TSN: "Credit to Fairfield. They were sharper than us early on. We were running in mud. Like that our guys hung in there. We didn't finish well at the rim. We didn't take a lot of 3s. Our defense has been bad as it's been all year. Learn some things about ourselves." "Have to play more guys tomorrow. Hicks' ankle is bothering him. Cam got poked in the eye. Effort was goo. Execution from some of our older guys was not where it needs to be. Contesting shots. Post feeds. We were a tick off mentally. We have to get that rectified." "Sloppy (20 sec-violation at the end). You make your own breaks. Our guys will bounce back. Playing a talented South Alabama team tomorrow. We'll be a bit banged up. A challenge for our performance staff."

Won't be at FCS or at Towson. Also, he's not Lane Kiffin.

Forgot about Flood's issues at Rutgers of alleged misconduct and a program rum amok in 2015. So no. He'll likely never be a head coach again.

Sure, I like the Delaware connection. He won an FCS title there in 2003. I just don't want a name, but somebody has a connection in the CAA or the area. Doubt he'll be looking at an FCS program again, but you never know. I'm sure we've had countless of people asking about this job that most of us would never consider. Maybe P5, Group of 5, FCS head coaches, NFL lower level assistants.

    Fairfield upsets MBB 74-69

One bright note was the play of Chase Paar. He's in better shape this year and maybe he's ready to give us 10-15 minutes per game at the 5. Just needs to be healthy.

My guess is he makes nearly double what the IU DC makes. He makes around 1.1 to 1.2 million so my guess is no unless he doesn't care about $$$. Texas pays a lot more to their coordinators than Indiana. Though Indiana's defense was pretty bad this season. He might have one year left there.

    Fairfield upsets MBB 74-69

Very disappointing effort. Didn't expect to go undefeated and assumed we'd have a loss somewhere in this tournament. No Gibson doesn't explain the porous defense in the first half and then the bad 3-point defense (mostly Nic) in the second half. Towson had to go strictly to a full-court zone press, which only really forced a turnover or two, but sped them up some. Last possession with Nic passing that to Sylla, we only had 20 seconds on the clock despite Timberlake forcing a change (in the frontcourt). So when Sylla missed everything on that drive. it was a shotclock violation. Need to take more than 13 threes. Need CT to make those 5-foot post up jump hooks he was making in CAA play. Also went 1 of 4 from the line in the first half. Didn't see the focus early on and they deserved the loss. Fairfield just got more confidence as the game went on and they deserved their first win. Hicks played just 21 minutes apparently because he's still struggling with that sprained ankle. We went big a lot with Holden and Timberlake in the backcourt, which is not ideal IMO. Would prefer to see more Conway because at some point, he's going to get hot, hit a few 3s in a row and that will get the team going. Still, you'd like our seniors to be a little more consistent with their production while helping the youngsters out. I think you see it at times where Nic gets the ball in the corner and would normally make that extra pass to Gibson. Well, he's not there and not sure he trusts Conway yet (I think he does, but not Hicks).
  16. Time for a new thread. For all things Towson men's basketball for the 2022-23 season. Predictions, CAA news, podcasts, videos, coaches shows, etc.
