  1. I wasn't sure what happened to the Collins. I don't think it was an injury, but I don't want to speculate. We didn't lose because of the D, but they played poorly. I also think the four interceptions, especially the first two knocked them for a loop. Those turnovers really deflated the team. The scheme was not good. Individually, even without Collins and Lumor (and Oly Okombi), I don't think the defense is that bad. As a unit, we looked dysfunctional. So we start Gyeni, Gibbs and Shaffer up front. Not one is a new player. Gyeni is a nose guard playing defensive tackle. I don't get it. Why not start Cholewa with Gyeni or Shaffer up front. Or Reece or Lauer. More height. They started the same front against Morgan State. So, the only transfer was Gibbs and he was here in 2019. Reece was moved to OLB, Okombi was out, so the only transfer from this season was Cholewa. I'll stick with what I said in the offseason, I do like most of the transfers. Love Collins, Bruton, Okombii, Lumor and Cholewa. Didn't think the LBs played well. Was disappointed with Reynolds. We were out of position a lot. Thought Bruton really struggled at safety/OLB. Couldn't cover the TE. They didn't blitz him very often. Thought we were outschemed on both sides of the ball. Very disappointing in all phases yet again, you have a good performance from the QB and you win the game. Both of them had time to throw so pass pro was decent.

Those referring to the "soft defense". You're right. Mark Collins Jr. is our best corner, but he shouldn't be the only one who can cover. When he went out after the first possession, we couldn't cover. Elorm Lumor was arguably the best transfer we picked up and he was out due to an injury. So the pass rush wasn't great. A strange move as they wound up using DT/E Tramar Reece to OLB. Seemed like we never set the edge. Maybe because he wasn't used to playing that spot. Don't think Lumorl play next week. Agree that Shuman and Peoples should be good enough to play closer to the WRs. That's not really why we lost. It's all about the QB.

FBS Transfer QB’s in the Ambrose Era

Enders was a juco who went to Holy Cross for a second. I believe it was Lackawanna. Yes, the QB track record is poor. Despite all the miscues on defense, you have Tom Flacco last night and you probably win the game.
  4. Well considering the OC is the head coach, he's not going to fire himself. But it was one of the worst calls I've seen in years. I saw a few blitzes and a little bit of interior penetration. That's disappointing, but it doesn't matter. We're not shutting them out. But guess what? When you have a mobile quarterback, even if he runs a 4.7 40, he can outun a 300 pound linemen and he did that several times tonight. Not making excuses, but we certainly missed Elorm Lumor, who just can't seem to stay healthy. Not sure what our OLBs were doing all night. Nobody seemed to set the edge. IF UNH decided to run on the perimeter a few more times, they would have put the game away earlier. But as I said earlier, even with questionable coaching on both sides of the ball, if you turn it over four times, it takes all the air out of the balloon. The energy seemed deflated after every turnover. I'm surprised they didn't put up 40 points. if you do that against NDST, they will put up a lot more than 40 points. They can do that without the turnovers.
  5. It's fine. I know some people won't post because if you have nothing better to say don't say it. Others will call for his job tomorrow. I know we had about 3 months to prepare for this with all the new players. I just don't get the whole thing. I should have seen it against Morgan. Tulane put up 69 points on them tonight. I know Tulane looked great against Oklahoma in the first game. But we should have put 50 on them. You hate to say the season is over in Game 2, but unfortunately it is.
  6. Also, that 4th and goal call at the 7 or 8 or whatever it was. That screen pass to Howard with four guys blocking for him was fine for a 2nd-down play. To not throw the ball into the end zone or near it on 4th down boggles the mind. The fact that we were giving the ball to our short-yardage back Devin Matthews on third-and-goal at the 7 also was incredible. If you don't have confidence in either QB, find someone this week who can complete passes. Not everyone is going to be wide open. The O-line can't protect for 6 or 7 seconds. The QB has to get rid of the ball or run from the pocket. Even the less mobile guys can dance out of the pocket. Shit, what do I know. I certainly don't know how to play the QB position. But I see the results. The completion %. I'm sure it's not all on the QB or the line. The receivers also have to step up. Other than Caleb Smith, you need more from Jabari Allen, Darian Street and Rutkowski. That Smith run after the catch was fantastic late in the game.

At this level, you need a dual-threat QB. It's a must. Sure, Ferguson did a great job of managing the game in 2018 and that Maine team was special. Not sure what happened to him since then.
  8. I'd like to see Amendola or that kid Nathan Kent. They are dual-threat QBs. I mean you play them against ND State, it will be ugly. But it's going to ugly anyhow. I hate the Wildcat but maybe you get one of those kids on the field in certain situations just to have that ability to run.

    Same as it ever was

I honestly don't think I've ever been more disappointed or depressed after a Towson loss and I've seen virtually hundreds of them. The lack of fire and passion in the first half. The poor discipline I'm not so sure of. What did Caleb Smith really do after the touchdown reception? Throw the ball too hard at the official? Jesus Gibbs I guess grabbed the jersey of the RB too hard and the RB shoved him. The guys that busted their ass all night were Howard and Matthews. There weren't a ton of holes (there were some early), but didn't see that effort from the LBs or safeties. Very little pass rush up front. I heard somebody mention in the Zoom press conference that turnovers can really get a team going, but they can also deflate you. Whether we were ready to play is another issue. But if we were, those two picks in the first half deflated us. Coaching on both ends, play-calling all issues. McConnell, who maybe didn't coach his best game since he should have waxed us, still seemed to know exactly what we were doing on both sides for the ball. I know everyone will question all the transfers that played or why maybe we didn't play in the spring. We didn't lose to a bunch of scrubs. But we were sorely outplayed. Even without the picks, we weren't moving the ball consistently. They knew exactly what we were going to run. Pocket passers to me are nearly irreilevant unless you have somebody that has a quick release, is very accurate and has a strong arm.

    Magazine Predictions

Lindy's has the CAA: 1)Delaware 2)Hofstra 3)Northeastern 4)JMU 5)UNCW 6)Elon 7)CofC 8)Drexel 9)W&M 10)Towson Athlon Sports 1)Delaware 2)NE 3)Drexel 4)JMU 5)Elon 6)Hofstra 7)W&M 8)Towson 9)Charleston 10)UNCW BTW, Hofstra could pretty good again. They brought back Jalen Ray (19.3ppg) and Kvonn Crame (8.9ppg, 6.7rpg). Yes, they lost Isaac Kante (12.9ppg, 10.1 rpg) and Tareq Coburn (15.3ppg, 39% 3PT to St. John's). But they added Aaron Estrada, a Saint Peter's transfer who didn't fit well at Oregon. He averaged around 8ppg at Saint Peter's as a freshman in 2019-20. 5-11 guard Zach Cooks is a grad transfer from NJIT who averaged 17.1pppg. Delaware gets Ryan Allen (15.3ppg) and Kevin Anderson (12.3ppg) back for their 20th seasons (it appears that way). Dylan Painter (13.5ppg) also returns. They add a point guard in Jameer Nelson Jr (8.2ppg). from GW. Not a dominant team, but a safe bet to win it. Drexel won the CAA Trny last season as the sixth seed. They get no respect in those standings despite getting Cam Wynter (16.2ppg, 5.2apg) and James Butler (12.8ppg, 9.2rpg) back. They do lose Zach Walton (10.5ppg) and TJ Bickerstaff (10.2ppg, 5.2rpg). Obviously, if Northeastern doesn't have those COVID issues late in the season, they might be dancing again. This year, will be tough without Tyson Walker (18.8ppg), who transferred to Michigan State. Shaquille Waters (10.5ppg, 6.6rpg) is back along with Jason Strong and Coleman Stucke. Air Force transfer Glen McClintock (5.4ppg) will help. JMU loses Matt Lewis finally, but returns four starters for a team that went 8-2 in the CAA. They were basically done when he tore his ACL. Van Morse (14.4ppg) is back along with three other starters. They add Winthrop transfer guard Charles Falden (10.1ppg, 36.4%FG). Elon finished 4-7 in the CAA. They return three starters. They could be in the mix if Jerald Gillens-Butler (15.7pg) can remain healthy. The Butler transfer blew out his Achilles after four games where he led the team in scoring. Hunter McIntosh (15.7ppg) is another solid player who returns. Charleston returns just one starter. But they add Bucknell transfer John Meeks (6-6, 224). He averaged 25.3 points in six games with the Bison last season. They also added transfers Radford leading scorer Fah'mir Ali (10.6ppg, 3.3apg) and D2 West Liberty transfer Dalton Bolon (21.3ppg, 44.6% 3pt). W&M lost Luke Loewe (16.2ppg) to Minnesota. They do return four starters from a 4-6 CAA team including Connor Kuchera (13.4ppg) and F Quinn Blair (11.7ppg). UNCW gets back Jaylen Fornes, who was at Nicholls State. Sound familiar? He averaged 7.5ppg at UNCW in 2019-20. He averaged 9.3ppg on 39.4% 3pt shooting in his one season at Nicholls State. They also return two starters from a 1-6 CAA team. Wing Jaylen Sims (17.8ppg) and G Mike Okauru (14.2ppg, 5.3rpg) are back.

    Magazine Predictions

Holland has been dealing with this toe issue for a long time. Hopefully they have finally taken care of the situation but I wouldn’t consider him the key guy. More like a wild card. Nolan and Holden can make the team better right away. Rizzuto will help defensively and as a shooter. Hicks is also a very good defender. I assume he’ll come off the bench.

    More from the game

I thought it was strange how everybody kept praising the ESPN3 broadcast, but the PBP guy was either fed wrong info from the spotter or got the wrong ball carries numerous times. It's as if he didn't do his homework because he called Devin Matthews, Makai Self. Both were 35. I guess he didn't think Towson was going to use that many RBs. Speaking of that, I didn't realize Jerry Howard got banged up. No wonder he only had seven carries. But I don't think it was serious. Elorm Lumor also came up out limping. Hoping that wasn't too serious. I was surprised to see him in the game up 24-0 in the second half. I didn't like the play-calling on that first drive. Howard gets nine yards on first down and RA goes right to the pass on 2nd and 1. A penalty by Grimmy and terrible call on Howard on a botched offside (the entire Morgan line jumped), a poor pass on 4th and 12 to Street which was underthrown and we turn it over on downs. I think if we just ran Howard that drive and set up a play-action on second down, we would have score easily. More later.

    More from the game

There were certainly correctable mistakes even on defense. They got a first down on the ground where the line was shifting as the play began. We didn't blitz much, but we shouldn't have to. We got there a few times, but should have had more than two sacks. Defensively, I did think Morgan played hard and about as well as they could. We were sloppy on offense at times and sure, not playing in two years probably contribute to that along with having a QB who has been here just two months. He didn't seem in sync with the receivers. One play where Jabari ran a fly and his ball drifted to the corner. Not sure if he expected him to cut to the right. My only concern outside the QB is the lack of a dynamic runner. I like Folley and Kobe as backups. I don't see that explosion where the backs run for long runs. Maybe that's due to the speed of the Morgan LBs and safeties. I know Howard can break a few. It's why I wanted to Curtis Murray in camp, but he never played in the scrimmages for whatever reason. I assume he's still learning the offense. It's something I think we can use next season. A Shane-type of guy at RB and a burner like Shane L. at WR.

Don't think anybody save for a young assistant is going to take that job. Who knows where they will be in three years? Five years?

No, I said play-by-play guy. He was the one that missed the names, not Hunt. Yes, it would be nice to hear from some of those who went to the game.
