  9. https://towsontigers.com/news/2022/9/10/towson-football-rallies-to-defeat-morgan-state-in-the-battle-for-greater-baltimore.aspx Strange game but this team is awfully strange right now. They committed eight penalties for 75 yards but really nine for 90 thanks to RA's penalty. The good? Piggy was outstanding tonight with 157 yards passing and three TDs. He also had 124 rushing yards and his running in the second half allowed the Tigers to hold on. Keegan Vaughan who had a rough first game connected on three field goals for a career-high. Darian Street with two catches and two TDs. Three key blitzes in the second half. One was on a Mason blitz up the middle for his first career sack and another on a Ryan Kearney blitz on 4th and 10 that forced QB Carson Baker to throw an incomplete pass. Woods also had a strong game with a pick and a sack. The bad? Kickoffs. Two went out of bounds. Josh Cupitt has to do better than that. That's his job along with holding on placekicks. D'Ago Hunter's fumble in the first quarter. It was his first action of the season and first touch. I'm not seeing him as the top running back. He averaged 3.1ypc while Devin Matthews averaged 4.9. Hopefully Jo Bangda will finally make his debut next week (not injury-related or behavior-related). Tackling has got to improve. Too many missed tackles, especially from the defensive linemen. The ugly? A handful or more of dropped passes including a beautiful 50-yard pass from Piggy to Street in the first quarter that went right off of his hands. He probably would have scored. Penalties galore including Jamal Gay's defensive holding call that cost the Tigers the ball because Bryce Lauer had a rare sack. Conclusion: Towson didn't a lot differently in the second half. They blitzed a little more and need more blitzing period. They just aren't getting enough pass rush from the outside linebackers or Jesus Gibbs, who finally got a sack tonight. This is not a really good football team right now if you struggle to beat Bucknell and Morgan State. The positive that came out of tonight is that Piggy can will this team to a win when they have an offensive line that just seems like it was put together in the last second and it was. His running was spectacular. His passing was good not great. He threw behind a few guys, but if you give him time, which he didn't always have, he can throw from the pocket. Our receivers need to do a better job of getting open and catching the ball. Yet, Perkins, Street, and James are going to be a decent trio and Sam Reynolds had 18 yards rushing on three carries and three catches. We're trying to get the fastest guy on the field the ball and that's a wise move.

Ok, got to watch the game back on MPT. Didn't realize that it was basically a Flo broadcast with TSN cameras. Save for a few mistakes by the cameras getting faked out on the RPOs, I thought it was fine. So my first impression is that we sub we took much on defense. No wonder there is no continuity and chemistry. Only guys that play the whole way were Mason Woods and Ryan Kearney, who played about 95% of the time. Woods was probably the best defender, though both guys dropped picks. I had us for five drops by five different receivers in the first half. Piggy threw two great long balls. One to Street on the first play that he dropped and one to DK James on that last drive that just went off his fingertips. But getting back to the subs, I counted Steed, Topps, Xavier Terry, and Rutkowski at safety. Burgess played very little at safety. My guess is that they are still experimenting but with Hunter coming off an ankle injury, they wanted Burgess to return kicks. Again, perplexing but Evan Rutkowski was playing with Topps on that last drive. The Bears scored on just one drive in the second half on their first possession and Steed gets a 15-yard penalty for a late-hit out of bounds. Then whiffs on a TD run by Graham, who was very impressive (runs under 4.4 40). Also in that last drive when Jesus Gibbs went down and Graham went crazy to the refs, it almost looked like he faked it to get a timeout. Though why would you want your most talented player off the field? Just bizarre shit on D. They finally blitz and they make plays, but it shouldn't have come down to that. If you don't go for 2 and kick the extra point, you get the field and goal and lead by 9. Game over. Then again, we probably play Hachvent and let them go right down the field without blitzing. On the long TD pass that Carson Baker threw to Avery Jones, why was the safety help from Topps? Robert Javier wasn't really beaten badly, but the Bears went with a different formation. They had two tight ends and we looked confused. So Sean Tucker did play some cornerback. Thought Shafeek Smith and Javier were ok. It appears were a bit bitter at corner this season, but the lack of pass rush doesn't help matters. We did get some rush in the first half. Lauer had a sack that was called back on the Jamal Gay hold. Then he had Baker in his grasp in the second half and couldn't finish. Same with Vinnie in the first half. What are we doing with having Tramar Reece and Mason Woods covering receivers? One is a 6-4, 270-pound OLB and the other is a 6-0, 235-pound ILB. I have no clue who the starters should be on defense right now aside from Woods, Vinnie, and Gibbs, When MJ Cunningham and Janaz Jordan are ready to go, they need to be in there. Matthews was the best RB by far but he got nicked up in the second half. So no Folley or Curtis Murray. We went with Hunter almost the entire second half with Piggy running a ton. Play-calling wasn't as suspect as I thought it was in the Bucknell game. Red zone play-calling and execution were iffy. Miss Jabari Allen's height there. Again, it's where you need Bangda but what happened to direct snap to Matthews? I guess it's tough to do that at the 10. It's more for inside the 5.

Watching a replay of the game, Gordy did mention he had a penalty against Bucknell. One in his career. Guessing Coach A never had one.

Look, I'm not saying that Piggy is as good as TF. But he gives us the best chance to win. Looking back at least year's game, we put up 412 yards and allowed just 142 in a 31-0 win. I do think Morgan is better at the QB position, but we might be worse right now as a team, especially on the offensive line. Tackling was atrocious in this game and last season, despite missing the entire 2020 season and 2021 spring, we gave up 142 yards. So is last year's defense better? Too early to tell but neither has gotten enough pressure on the passer. When you look at the running backs, we don't have a Jerry Howard (without Bangda) though he didn't do a lot. It was Chris Ferguson throwing for 242 yards and two TDs. Street and Caleb Smith had big games.

I know you hate Piggy but this isn’t 2010. Take away the drops and he has over 250 yards passing. We desperately need a running qb behind that line. Also, who was optimistic after that game? Just thought the offense played well in the second half. I have no expectations for this team but if I’m going to watch every game I want to see some excitement.

We aren’t really short of running backs due to injuries. They just went with Hunter and Matthews. No Curtis Murray or Folley. Bangda will be the top back when he gets in there and I’d just use him sparingly next week. To me, Hunter should play receiver and return man and be used the way they used Reynolds yesterday. He’s just too small to get over 10 carries a game

Also thought the Bears' coaching staff helped out after the Hunter fumble in the first quarter. They are gashing us with the run and Here's what they did: Morgan St. at 11:00 1st and 10 at TOW24 Morgan St. drive start at 11:00. 1st and 10 at TOW24 No Huddle-Shotgun Baker,Carson pass incomplete short middle to Hamler,Daymond. 2nd and 10 at TOW24 No Huddle-Shotgun Baker,Carson pass incomplete short right to Crawley,Andre QB hurried by Gibbs,Jesus. 3rd and 10 at TOW24 No Huddle-Shotgun Baker,Carson pass incomplete short right to Wilkins,Tyler broken up by Javier,Robert. 4th and 10 at TOW24 No Huddle-Shotgun Baker,Carson rush left for 5 yards gain to the TOW19 (Kearney,Ryan; Gay,Jamal), out of bounds.

Not only was the pass rush bad, but we allowed 150 yards on the ground and allowed 4.8 yards per carry. If you hold them to under 4.0 yards per carry, they cruise to the win.

There’s no excuse for the lack of pass rush in the first two games. Because of the way teams practice now, it’s understandable that tackling is going to be sloppy early in the season. But we couldn’t even get to the Bucknell QB. Baker played well for Morgan State and he had five starts at San Diego State. He is legit and is 6-3 205 with a good arm and great mobility. He looked terrible early on as a.passer and then we let him get into a rhythm though he was only 10 of 24. I think we’ll see Cunningham and Janaz Jordan next week or in the opener of the CAA. I’m flabbergasted that the others haven’t played aside from special teams.

This is for people who went to the game. Any thoughts about the tailgating, beer sales or the crowd or new policies?
