Ugly wins are better than pretty losses. We'll take it 12-10 on the road in ugly, rainy conditions. Nilan struggled in the first half, but allowed just two goals in the second half. Fairfield with 19 turnovers, Towson with 16. The game changed late in the third quarter when Roussel finally went back to attack and they put him behind the goal. He found Villagomez for the layup and then he scored himself. Fairfield never recovered. Nilan had seven saves, most of them off his body. Not sure he's the answer, but defense also has to improve whomever is in net. Matt C. just 50% on face-offs, but won a few big ones in the second half. Fairfield and the rain held DeMaio to just 2 assists, Mikey W. with 3g, Villagomez with 2g, Webber 1, Mauer 1g, Chop 1, 2a, Duccomon 2g.

It's 8-8 at the half at Fairfield. Ugly, windy and rain. The play is ugly. Nilan got the start in net and he hasn't been very good. Just three saves and the same with the Fairfield goaltender. Same defensive mistakes over and over, but at some point, you have to make saves on those long shots. Face-offs have been bad as Matt C. for some reason, has taken all 18 face-offs and won just 8. So they were unable to go on any runs because he lost 5 or 6 face-offs in a row at one point in the second quarter. Yet Nads never went to Rocco Mareno, has face off 3-4 times per game. Then you have two timeouts and he doesn't take one until about 35 seconds left and Webber loses the ball as he tries to one-time it from 10 yards out. Mikey W. with 3 goals, though one was a lucky goal on a pass. Eight turnovers for both team though understandably in that slop. Gasikins (1g) and Ducommun (2g) has provided a boost from the second midfield. It seems like the turf has slowed down the Webbers and Roussel's of the world, who can't seem to beat anybody.

I thought Charleston would slow it down some. There was no way they were going to compete against Alabama playing like that unless they made every shot. Every miss was turned into a layup or wide open three. Alabama’s defense was not great this season so I thought maybe they could hang but Sears was just too much. It’s also where recruiting so many D2 players and playing 12 can bite you in the ass against athletes who can play.

Fairfield preview. Nilan or Downs in goal? Rousel to attack? https://x.com/towson_mlax/status/1771160581162066163?s=46&t=nScacl1TWT-KyOwj5stBaw

Stayed up late and got the complete Nick experience. Makes a few shots early and FTs, struggles defensively and winds up in foul trouble. He sits early in the second half, scores some, gives up some, makes a late three, misses a front end of a one-and-one and then is fouled with KU up one on a block from behind that was no foul. But to his credit, he made both FTs. Was left open all night and it helped to have Dickinson back on the floor.

Screw Izzo. Go Oakland Golden Grizzlies!

The ratings are most likely the best most college basketball games get all year before the NCAA Tournament. That’s what I’m referring to in terms of money. Sure, the mid majors are not making huge money for getting one or two nationally televised games. I would hate for them to get rid of these tournaments because that’s where you get the most intensity and buzzer beaters

Conference tournaments are here to stay ($$$). Maybe it will be altered at some point. Limit the amount of teams in, etc. But there's no direction in college basketball so it's a free-for-all.

"I'm not sure I understand why, but the conference tournament things, you can go and like Purdue go 17-3 and dominate the conference and then lose. It's okay if it's the second place team, but I think that makes it hard, why some teams will get left out. I don't know if something could be fixed there," Izzo told the media. "There's getting to be more parity, there's getting to be more unknowns, there's getting to be more upsets, there's getting to be more of these, what, 20 of the 32 conferences, the regular season champ did not − it just doesn't happen like that. So I think it needs to be taken a serious look at." He didn't say get rid of the automatic bid for conference tournaments (insinuated it), but it's typical thinking for high-majors and I wouldn't worry about it in college basketball. College football can knock off all the mid-majors and then have them join their super-conferences when they've earned it.There's a certain charm about an FDU, GMU, VCU, UMBC, winning early or going far. Would Maryland be a Cinderella if they got in as a .500 team and went far (of course they wouldn't this season)? Of course not. The Power 5/6 are worried about the Mountain West surpassing them and having Final Fours with San Diego State and FDU. How about worrying more about NIL and winning more games? Tom is close to retiring anyhow so he's just spouting off.

A lot of schools are interested not just mid majors but I assume it’s more for defense and length
