  1. Steve also talked about facilities. Renovation of the field house next spring and improvements to the Towson Center’s practice courts along with adding turf.

Baseball and field hockey can certainly use more scholarships and the fact that gymnastics isn’t fully funded is remarkable considering what they’ve accomplished.

  2. With NT RJ Evans, WR Matthew Akuchie, DB Andre Stewart, CB Sean Tucker, LB Jakari Patterson, DT Samuel Obiang (CFL), LB Mason Woods, OG Mathias Andnigbaruk all gone in the portal, Towson has some holes to fill, but they also have extra ships over the summer which is never a bad thing. OL, DT, LB, CB and DB are all needs.

Going into the summer, I can only go by what I see and hear as Coach Pete is rarely going to get specific about starters or even backups, but I like creating some discussion so here goes nothing.

QB Carlos Davis, Nathan Kent, Sean Brown, freshman Winston Watkins, Sean Smith, Jack Pellicciotti

Analysis: Davis adds a playmaker with a big arm. Did not see him turn the ball over. Kent has the experience, but is more of a game-manager.

RB Devin Matthews, Chris Watkins, Tyrell Greene, Ike Daniels (Syracuse transfer), Trey Engram (K-State transfer).

Analysis: Matthews is the north-south runner as is Greene. Watkins gives the offense explosion and is a pretty good receiver. Daniels is the x-factor. Will get some touches. Freshman Caddy Phillips (5-9, 185) from St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia is supposed to be a stud.

TE: Carter Runyon, CJ Schaefer, Malik Jackson, freshman Jordan Stallworth.

Analysis: Probably could use another body, but let's face it, Runyon is one of the premier tight ends in the CAA and possibly FCS with about 10 added pounds.

    WR: DK James (6-1, 190), Zay Perkins (6-2, 210),  John Dunmore (6-3, 190), Lukkas Londono (5-10, 185), Cee Chosen (6-0, 180), Brady McElhaney (6-0, 175), Zack Jackson (6-1, 205).

Analysis: It will be interesting to see who the next young guy will be since most of those guys listed above have 1-2 years left. Junior Sam Reynolds could return. Freshmen Cleveland Charlton (6-5, 180) and Nayad Walker (5-10, 160) are probably going to redshirt, but you never know.

    LT: Dan Volpe (6-6, 320)

    😄 Ralph Paige Jr. (6-3, 305), Ian Markham-Miller (6-3, 300)

    LG:  Ibrahim Giwa (6-4, 290), Flo Staehler (6-9, 300), Jaelin Montgomery (6-3, 310)

    RG: Jean Germain (6-6, 350) if he's healthy, Joden Nelson (6-4, 295)

    RT: K.J. Brooks (6-3, 305), Kevin Gaston (6-5, 290)

Analysis: Little concerned about depth at tackle, Giwa is a Wagner transfer, but if Staehler and Germain are healthy, there should still be competition at left and right guard. Nelson had a really good camp. True freshman Tkhi Alexander (6-5, 330) is a huge tackle from Richmond, who might be able to add depth, but most likely, they are adding a transfer.

    DL (3/4)

    NG Dion Crews-Harris (6-0, 290), Junee Dunbar (6-0, 305),  Daniel Johnson (6-2, 290)

    DT Rion Roseborough (6-2, 315), Brockman Wallace (6-2, 285), Shamir Boyd (6-2, 290), Anthony Delle Donne (6-1, 290)

    DT/E Ernie Smith (6-2, 290), Elijah Tarlton (6-5, 240), Mazio Randall (6-5, 300)

Analysis: I really like Roseborough, but he's just a redshirt freshman. With Evans gone, they are going to bring in another NT and probably a DT along with the juco transfer just added today Mazio Randall (6-5, 300). So there likely be two more transfers, but there are some huge and talented freshmen coming in. Bernard Birch (6-2, 315) is a 3* recruit from Kansas. JR Stegall (6-3, 310) is a talented DT from Fort Worth. Aaron Clark (6-0, 310) is a NG from West Virginia.

    LB:

OLB: Rodney Roane Jr. (6-2, 225), Evan Rutkowski (6-2, 210)

    OLB: Daniel Raymond (6-0, 220), Nick Haynes (6-1, 210)

    IL: John Gioia (6-1, 230), Alijah Bivens (5-11, 220)

    IL: Will Middleton (5-11, 215), Branson Peters (6-1, 215).

Analysis: Middleton is a transfer from Saint Francis and Gioia from Wagner. Gioia had a terrific camp and Middleton should help against the run and pass. So here's the thing, Gioia, Middleton and Peters are all transfers. But they are placeholders because there will be a transfer or two at most likely EDGE and a very talented freshman coming in led by Alfred Thomas (6-1, 220) from Orlando.

    DB

    S Kaden White (6-1, 190), Jason Shiggs (6-1, 170)

    S Xavier Terry (5-10, 190), Mike Swain (5-10, 180)

    CB Myles Brodie (6-2, 175), Justin Toler (5-10, 175)

    CB Shafeek Smith (5-10, 175), Zakaa Brown (6-1, 165)

Analysis: This will be the most important competition over the summer. Not sure that anything is locked in. Maybe Terry starting since he has experience. But they brought in Shiggs and Zakaa Brown as freshmen along with White. But they are not done yet, as they really need a corner who can start, hopefully with some size though Brodie had a strong camp. In the summer, more freshmen are coming along with Emiril Gant (6-0, 170) from Apopka, Fla., T.J. Sands (6-2, 190) from Orlando, Cody Williams (6-0, 175) from DeMatha, Shamir Johnson (6-0, 165) from St. Joe's Prep in Philly.

Bit of a weak schedule this year, with only one Top-10, and three Top-20 tests. Maybe we can scrimmage ourselves a bit harder or a little more often to toughen ourselves up. Lots of playing time for the supporting cast today should prove helpful. A score like that - must be nearly a record! Onward Tigers🥍

We played No. 4 Virginia and No. 2 Hopkins. Beat No. 13 St. Joseph's. Personally, I'd like to win the last two and continue to win. If we're the best team in the league we should be able to beat Delaware twice.

Apparently if we find us some foreign recruits, at least for now, they are now allowed to receive NIL money.  Maybe those trips to Canada will pay off.

Zach Edey couldn't receive NIL because he's Canadian but I imagine that will change shortly. If there is still somebody doing anything at the NCAA. Sulaiman is from England and well, you know.

  5. Easy and predictable win today 25-2 over Hampton. It's like playing a D2 team in hoops or football, but you don't have a choice because this is a conference opponent. Only good thing is that the backups played the entire second half. It was 2-1 Towson after one and 12-1 at the half. A little sleepy and sloppy start. Bad thing was that nobody could watch the bench play because it wasn't on Flo. We did clinch home field in the tournament for what that's worth. Delaware appears to still be the team to beat. But we'll see. Next week, not much of a test against Monmouth at home with little play and then Delaware on the road.

  6. A few things I forgot to add: Watkins and Runyan almost scored on a screen pass from Davis from around 60 yards. Both different type of runners but also shows where the secondary needs to wrap up better.

Comments from Pete Shinnick after the Spring Game

“Day-to-day competition. Like how we’ve progressed on both sides of the ball. Understanding more of what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. Back and forth spring.”

    On players

“I’m really excited about a lot of guys. All of the guys that we brought in have improved. We challenged all the returners to step their game up. I’m excited about where we are as a whole.”

    On second year

“More established. Guys understand what we’re trying to do. The purpose behind it. A greater grasp of all our programs. I’m excited to turn it over to our strength coach to have a great fall.”

    On spring

“Feel good about the number of reps and looks for our guys. Great idea as to what guys need to do and how they need to do it. We’ve had every condition known to mankind (wind).”

    On QB1

“Too soon. Carlos took a lot of the ones reps. When we started Spring Ball, Nate was taking a lot of the ones. I think this is a competition that will continue. You saw a little bit of what Carlos can do. How he extends the play and how he can get out of the pocket when things break down. Both guys need to have a great summer. Nothing is solidified. Carlos need a complete command of the offense, understanding everything, ,all the calls, checks, everything we do it. “

    Carter Runyon

“He’s gained some weight, stronger and continues to get better.”

    On defense

“We have great competition in our secondary. We have a bunch of LBs flying around. You’ve seen more athleticism and it’s a plus. Rodney Roane has been out, but we’re getting him back. No major injuries and everyone (who is out), should be back. Nothing permanent.”

On what work on over the summer

“We just have to get better and more consistent. We had a couple of false starts and offsides. Had little things when they continue, they add up. We have to do everything to win the field position battle.”

    On transfers

“Understanding scheme. We brought in 3 LBs, 3 DBs. Those six guys really had a learning curve. We brought in an OL. Everything is called differently. A freshman QB. From Day 1 to now, they have improved tremendously.”

  7. Ok, to add to this since my Google Chrome is acting up.

*Quarterbacks are IMO, Carlos Davis, N. Kent, S. Brown, S Smith (didn't see him today), freshman Winston Watkins (should redshirt but very talented), Jack Pellicciotti.

*On defense, I still think we need a taller lineman. R.J. Evans (6-1, 285) was injured last season and was a transfer from Ark-Pine Bluff. He should be a factor inside with Dion Crews-Harris (6-0, 290), but Evans is probably more like 5-11. Rion Roseborough (6-2, 315) is a powerful r-freshman who will get a lot of playing time. Ernie Smith (6-2, 290) could start in that spot that Jesus Gibbs played last season. I think we'll be fine there since they like to rotate, but one more difference-maker is needed and I know we're after one in the portal.

*Linebackers are better even though they had to replace Mason Woods and Jakari Patterson, who both went into the portal. John Gioia (6-1, 230) from Wagner, has been the steadiest guy in the middle in camp. He does come out during passing situations or at least, that's how they were using him as a two-down player (today). Evan Rutkowski with a Rodney Roane and Daniel Raymond out with various injuries, got a lot of time and looked good. Branson Peters (6-1, 215) is the guy I think has the most upside because he was all over the field and has speed. Also liked Will Middleton (5-11, 215), who has experience at St. Francis (PA). Not concerned about LBs or DL because I know they'll be solid and will add at least one transfer. We do need a star or to develop one.

*Secondary will be interesting and in other words, it's all up in the air. I think Shafeek Smith starts at one of the corner spots based on experience. The guy who really stood out was Myles Brodie (6-2, 175), a lanky corner from Alvernia, who played some last season. Justin Toler (5-10, 175) also got some reps at corner in the first string, but I would prefer not have two 5-10 corners. That's where a transfer and a ton of freshmen are in the mix. Zakaa Brown (6-1, 165) has been the best of a talented group along with Jason Shiggs (6-1, 170), who is more of a safety. Both need to hit the weight room over the summer. Mike Swain (5-10, 180) is another shorter DB, a transfer from Campbell, who they can use at corner, nickel or safety. I like Kaden White (6-1, 190), a Butler CC transfer at safety along with returner Xavier Terry (5-10, 190).

  8. Another lousy Saturday. Very windy though not quite as bad as Friday. Pretty good crowd for the lower practice field (around 300?). Small bleachers and not a lot of room to watch. Good to see some former players back like Brady Smith, Ryan Rutkowski, watching his brother Evan and more.

No stats, but I'm going to mention a few players and plays I was impressed with.

*One of the earliest TDs came on a double-reverse where DK James passed the ball to Carlos Davis for around a 20-yard TD. It showed the potential they have with Davis. but for those who have not been to a spring practice or summer practice, quarterbacks are down when they are touched, not tackled. So they are limited what they can do and probably don't want to show everything in terms of RPO. He didn run a few times to get the first down on scrambles, but I like the fact that Davis, in the last two scrimmages I watched, played with the first team.

Davis has all the physical attributes (6-2, 230), a cannon arm and is a strong runner. He was a little erratic on some short throws today, but I love the fact that they are throwing short to guys that can make people miss: Watkins, DK James and even Carter Runyan, who if he continues to progress, will be an All-American. Scouts will come to the U next season because he's 6-6, 250 and can run. Last spring, Watkins was nearly an afterthought. He might have the fourth-string running back. Now, he's running with the one's along with Devin Matthews. If they can get Watkins in space and at least use him as a third-down back, he'll be exciting.

*I like seeing Ike Daniels, the Syracuse transfer at running back. But he was running with the twos and that meant a bit shaky offensive line. If I had concerns about the line, it was the run-blocking on short-yardage. OT/G Flo Staehler left the scrimmage with an injury and not sure how serious it was as he had to be carted back to the locker room. Another reason to get more depth there, though I think if Jean Germain (6-6, 350) is healthy in the summer, they have him or a much-improved Joden Nelson at right guard and true sophomore KJ Brooks at right tackle. Center Ralph Paige and LT Dan Volpe are returning all-conference players and they add LG Ibrahim Giwa (6-, 290) from Marist. He's the likely starter there, but still concerned with depth. I like the improvement Jaelin Montgomery (6-3, 310) has made at guard. He's a transfer from JMU who did not play last season. But the key will get getting Germain back and hopefully Staehler is not injured seriously.

  9. We're never going to get solid D1 transfers who score 12+ points per game until we start raising more money for NIL and giving some out of our pocket. It's still incumbent on the athletic department to continue to push the difference between giving to the TAF and GOH Collective. Most people still don't know what they are giving to. Another zoom meeting with Richard Kent or somebody in the know is needed. That's not a Skerry thing. It's not a system or pace factor. It's an NIL factor and until we can have Hofstra, Stony Brook and UNCW money (we're never going to catch CofC), then we're going to have to do it the old-fashioned way and methodical way and that's recruit freshmen.

  10. 16 minutes ago, Chris Datres said:

Maybe this is the impetus we finally need to change the offense and get away from that plodding throw it to the post, back em down game.

Nah, who am I kidding.  That ain't changing.

Might be going back to four guards and Embeya is more of a face up five at least until he gets stronger. So, might not be a huge change but they will be different next season based on personnel.

  11. I'm not stopping this thread, but apparently, we won't be bringing in a transfer at this time. I get bringing Jaiden Cole back, because there is upside there in terms of length and athletic ability. Hicks has had several concussions but hasn't graduated yet. It's tough to just nudge him off the team and reportedly, he's been cleared. But the Paar thing I don't get. Clumsy big with bad knees who graduated. I assume Watson is the odd man out because somebody has to go to clear the way for both freshmen to come in.

This also puts a ton of pressure on 6-9 Caleb Embeya. I think offensively, he has a chance to be better than Charles right away, but defense and staying away from fouling too much is almost always an issue for young big men. The good thing is that he's athletic enough to switch and smaller players and not hurt you.

Luke Murray would be a really good get for any school with an opening.  Hurley calls him the offensive coordinator of those efficient sets and he had the scout for the Purdue game.

Luke will get a job very shortly though it's tough when your team keeps winning titles and there are no jobs left. But as much as I respect his abilities, I'm pretty sure that offense is mostly Hurley. He's mentioned how he changed his style several years ago.

    https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-basketball/how-dan-hurley-fashioned-uconn-into-an-offensive-juggernaut-and-repeat-title-contender

"Without a high-powered offense and being able to score the ball," Hurley told FOX Sports, "you can't win a six-game tournament."

"Any time you played Danny's teams in the past, you knew you had to win a street fight," said Manhattan head coach John Gallagher, whose team lost to UConn in late November, during an interview with FOX Sports. "Now in the last, I'd say, two to three years, you gotta go into the library and win the debate, too.

"I don't think he gets enough credit for evolving as one of the best coaches in the country."'

Ensuring that every player becomes fundamentally sound is paramount to the success of UConn's new offensive scheme, a motion-based system that leans on passing, cutting and off-ball screening far more than individual dribbling and old-school post-ups. Big men like Donovan Clingan and Samson Johnson are expected to read, screen and pass from the top of the key to clear unnecessary traffic in the lane. Shooters like Tristen Newton, Cam Spencer and Alex Karaban are asked to make expert cuts, clean dribble exchanges and droves of 3s after peeling off screens. Everyone handles the ball in the hunt for high-quality shots.
