An 18-0 run propels MBB over Morgan State, 76-59

^I couldn’t stand how he kept saying Dennis TURNstul the whole game. He also called Jason Gibson, Zack then the next time he referenced him he called him Jack. But overall a great broadcast

Nice win. Morgan can't shoot but did run some nice cuts and backdoor plays. We typically always play down to their level and its a very close game. There was definitely some suspicious officiating which lead to a long game with all of the FT's, at least they didn't have any real long review. Was sitting right across from Sanders when he got mugged. How that was a jump ball might be the worst call I've seen in person.  No play made on the ball and just chucked him.

As critical as I am with Pat, he did a very good job tonight switching defenses, into a little zone and lead to our big runs. They got their hands in passing lanes and got out on the break. Damn Timberlake can run!  Also liked that he put Gibson in at the end and went small when they were going to press.  Gibson, Dottin, Fobbs, Betrand and Sanders.

I'm in the minority but will say again, HATE playing these local teams.  It's big if they win and crappy if we lose. There's nothing to gain IMO on playing Morgan, especially there. Yes, we save on travel, and it's nice for me to go to some road games, but I just don't see the benefit.

Speaking of officiating, Fobbs got fouled on a breakaway and the heavy balding ref put up an intentional foul signal.  But when they came back from a timeout, it became a common foul.  Was that reviewed during the timeout or did they just decide to change their mind?

Towson was tied 32-all with Morgan State with 2:21 left in the first half and went on a 7-0 run to close the half. They took a 7-point lead in the second half and extended it to 18 at 50-32 with 15:57 left. That's when the Bears went on a 13-0 run of their own, but the Tigers staved off the comeback attempt and won the local rivalry, 76-69.

First to the quotes from Skerry on postgame on 1300am

"We did a pretty good job to go zone. Our man to man was better in the second half. Wasn't good earlier. We got out in transition. Nice plays. Our seniors played very well. "

"Our guys remember we gave one away last year (against Morgan in Baltimore). Good crowd. I liked our poise in stretches. We had a bit of a lull."

"We've seen some flashes of high-level play when the ball is really moving. We need to continue to do that." "Sanders was good. Dennis played really well. Fobbs was really good. Six assists to two turnovers. The shot will fall. Allen has made a jump."

The Good

Defense forced 18 turnovers. We don't press. We haven't really used a zone press much this season. But when Gray and Tunstall were in during a brief time in the first half in the zone defense, we were forcing turnovers and getting out on transition. The Brian Fobbs' dunk in transition was a thing of beauty. Fobbs had six assists. We outrebounded the Bears by 10 and shot 7 of 17 from three-point range. Betrand went 3 of 4 from three-point and scored 17 points. Sanders was big with 5 of 6 from the field, 13 points and six rebounds. Tunstall had 13 pts, 10 rebs and 2 blocks.

The Bad

Gibson just 0 for 3 from the field and 0 for 3 from 3pt in 21 minutes with 2 turnovers and 1 assist. Look a bit scared to drive against a pretty good shotblocker and quicker defenders. Even Dottin couldn't get to the rim or at least didn't try. The 13-0 run by Morgan State was Towson at it's worst. Bad shot selection, bad fouls, not taking it to the basket. Settling for bad shots. Once they started getting it inside to Sanders, the offense calmed down. Our halfcourt offense still has a ways to go.

The ugly

Bench had just 16 points. Thompson played 17 minutes but went 1 for 4 from the field. Did have three boards and two offensive but still struggles at times to finish underneath. When Sanders stays out of foul trouble, Thompson won't see as much time but he's going to be good once he learns how to finish better. It wasn't a great night for him and Gibson as freshmen. Gray played just 10 minutes because he picked up two very quick fouls in the second half. Once was a bad foul and another was as ticky tack as you can get. He had 7 points in 10 minutes. No reason why he shouldn't play 20 minutes with that soft touch from 3-point and he is shooting 50% from beyond the arc. Timberlake looked good in the first half and then in the second half, struggled with a bad turnover on a double-clutch in the air. Missed some open looks. Had one decent drive and was fouled. Then proceeded to miss two FTs. When he and Betrand are playing well on both ends, this team will be tough to beat in the CAA, but they have to be more consistent. Nick is just coming back off an injury this year and last year. He's basically a freshmen with about 14 games of action and it showed tonight.

But enough of the bitching. It was a quality win on the road with nearly 4,000 people at Hill Field House. I've seen a lot of good wins and bad losses there. Decided not to go. Should have but stream was fine. Actually a solid production from Morgan State. Much tougher game coming up at Vermont on Saturday night and then I'll certainly be there against UMBC on Tuesday.

nearly 4,000?!? ESPN lists that place as holding 4,250. I would say 2,500-3,000. No way it was that close to capacity.

Nick's 2 FT's looked and came off very badly. But would like to see a defensive lineup of Him, Dennis, Betrand, Dottin and Thompson. Best D Lineup when a stop is needed.

I thought Sanders was the key to the W; when he was on the floor, the offense was just better. Tunstall had a “quiet” 13 points & 10 boards, & Betrand continues to impress. Meanwhile, Fobbs had a highlight reel posterization dunk.

On the other hand, for the 1st time, I thought Gibson looked a little overmatched.

Agree with all you said. Loved them playing through Fobbs, he made some good passes and decisions with the ball. Also liked them posting up Betrand on the smaller defenders, has a Mike Morsell-ish lanky-ness to him and finished pretty well down low and in the mid range. But the key was, that he was confident.  Tunstall had a great game, I could have sworn he had more than 10 boards. He blocked more shots than what was in the official box score. Had to play big minutes with the other 3 bigs in foul trouble. It helps that Morgan doesn't have a big bruiser and their only serviceable big was in sanders like foul trouble.

Play of the game was the roll play from Fobbs to Sanders that got the and-1 to move the lead from 5 to 8.  Up to that point, we hadn’t been doing anything right on offense and Morgan looked like they were going to get all the way back.  After that, we got back to more of an open floor on offense and we locked them down defensively.  Morgan isn’t the highest caliber but they still provide an element that gives us trouble and it exhibited to Gibson and Thompson that there are gonna be struggles out there.

For those who watched the Morgan feed, did it feel like we were listening to announcers from the And 1 Summer Tour?  Their confusion over the flop warning was especially entertaining.

I was there and the fans were equally confused and upset about it. There was no announcement made over the PA, but it was one of their better calls of the night.

The Sanders And-1 was huge. A really nice move by him. He actually looked under control for the most of the night.

It’s important to play at least two local teams a year, but beating these teams is expected. Losing is devastating.

Attendance at Morgan last night was 3,789; capacity is 4,200. This on a Wednesday night, where the home team came in with a record of 3-6.

SECU is in its 7th year. In the 1st season, 2013-14, we had 4 crowds that exceeded the attendance at Morgan last night. Since then, only 1 time, in 2/15, vs Delaware, have we had a home attendance higher than what Morgan had last night

"announced" attendance.  I was there and there was no way in hell that there were only 400 empty seats... And 1/3 of people didn't show up until HT
