Some interesting stats

Recommended Posts

Towson's best season under PS was in 2013-14 when they went 25-11 (15-1 at home). They shot 36% from long range and 45.4% overall. Four McGlynn shot 41% from beyond the arc, but you also had Guthrie, Damas, and Burwell who all shot a respectable 35% from deep. None of those three was known as a great three-point shooter. That was a good but not great defensive team (40.5% FG, 31.4% 3pt, 68.8ppg), but they were +5.3 on the boards thanks to Benimon (11.4rpg). One thing that team didn't do particularly well was shoot free throws (68.8%).

Now, flash forward to 2019-20, some six years later. The three-point shooting is slightly worse (34.4%), the overall field goal percentage is much worse (43%). The rebounding is about the same (+5.1) as is the defense (66ppg, 40.5% FG, 32% 3pt). If this team is going to go far, they need to get to the foul line. Unlike 2013-14, they can shoot it from the line, averaging 77.4%, which ranks 15th in the country.

In the past, you might say, "oh boy, all they do is rebound and try and draw fouls". But now, of course, the game has changed some due to the three-point shot. But wouldn't you want Fobbs (83.9%), Betrand (88.4%), Gibson (88.1%) and even Sanders (69.7%) go to the line. Even Tunstall's numbers look ok (71.4%), though he's only gone to the line 21 times this year and made 15. That's after going to the line 40 times and making 25 last season. Getting Gray back would be nice, but it's hard to believe he'll be an 83% FT shooter until next season with that broken right hand.

One thing you have to give credit to this squad is their improved foul shooting. Last season, they shot just 69.5% from the line so they did make huge strides.

The improvement in foul shooting has been extremely impressive. Didn’t realize we were 15th in the nation. Credit to the players and the coaching staff

Yes 15th in the nation and 2nd in the conference. NE Leads the country.  Caa actually has 4 of the top 25 teams in ft shooting

the increase is commendable. We are making a lot less fts than that team though. We were going to the line 25+ times a game or something absurd.

Having 4 very good ft shooters and an above average shooting 5 man, is helpful late in games. Some of our defensive lapses and late game collapses in years past, haven’t reared their ugly head as often due to the shooitng
