NCAA suspends recruiting

Jeff Ruland was also a former Iona head coach from 1998-2007. and admitted to taking money from Valvano as a player back in the late seventies. Also Tim Welsh and Kevin Willard coached thee.

As a player, he was a star until his shoulders and knees gave out on him with the Bullets. Had he stayed healthy, he would have been revolutionized the center position on offense. Kind of a nasty, surly guy from Long Island.

In death, Valvano has assumed an almost saintly image, based on his “never give up” speech while he was battling cancer. As a result, many don’t recall that he resigned from NC State under a huge cloud of suspicion, including horrific academic performance by many of his players, along with allegations of having paid players, & players engaged in point shaving

He & Rick Mahorn formed the “beef brothers” while with the Bullets. The Celtics radio broadcaster had a different moniker for them ... “McFilthy & McNasty.”

Yeah, Johnny Most. I was a ballboy for the Bullets when Ruland was hurt in 1985-86 and they traded him for Moses Malone. Terrible trade for the Sixers. Bullets were just competing with older guys to stay above board.

Yeah, Dickie V. still paints him as a saint. The academic stuff was unfortunately probably normal back then before Prop 48 and those other regulations. I know Peter Golenbock's book Broken Promises detailed a lot of that stuff.

One of my darkest days as a Sixers fan.  The trade was done on draft day when the Sixers had the number one pick.  The could of had a front court of Brad Dougherty, Charles Barkley and Moses Malone.  Instead we got Jeff Ruland on one leg and Roy Hinson from the Cavs.  Ugh

NCAA announces spring athletes will get an extra year of eligibility, but not winter athletes from this past season (basketball).

Wonder how the scholarship limit will be calculated?  What about schools with budgets that won’t allow for an extra year of scholarships?

It's going to be pain in the ass for spring sport coaches. I think a lot of these guys returning, unless they are stars, are going to have to get no money (barring some grant or academic scholly). It's probably not worth returning for a lot of seniors. I wonder which players in men's lacrosse will return. Gray Bodden? Jake McLean? Tyler Canto?
