half joking.

Eh, not really. We don't draw much and the stadium is big enough to have people spread out.  The issue would be in logistics: getting people in and out of the stadium, restrooms, etc.

We drew around 6,500 a game last season. That’s a little over half capacity. We had nearly 10,000 against Villanova. That will not happen this season due to the virus. Maybe last year was an outlier but those were the facts. That’s why I said half joking.

If football is bringing players in starting July 6, that means an extra month of paying for out-of-staters' room and board. How do you add costs when a 25% budget cut is mandated?

The cut is for each sport. We don’t know what each sport is doing to cut the budget. I’m guessing they are not doing much traveling for recruiting so that saves money right there. And Football players have always been on campus in the summer. Usually taking summer courses.

When Rob returned to take the HC job, having a paid summer session was one of the foundational blocks that he insisted upon. This is what the FBS schools and top tier FCS teams do!  A huge recruiting tool,  it allows these kids to graduate in 4 and use a redshirt year to pursue a Masters.  Years ago,  kids paid their own way during the summer. Today,  it’s part of the  whole scholarship package.  However,  we also include the walk-ons, giving them the opportunity to achieve the same  academic matriculation the the scholarship kids get. Typically, you’ll have all 98 on campus (including freshmen) by 7/6.

Edit: with the loss of Spring ball, it’s imperative to have everyone on campus by 7/6

Sorry to all the black and gold blinder people in advance!
“6,500” (let’s not pretend here it’s closer to 5k) is not undoable. But we would need to give out a lot of tickets. Pray. And fudge numbers if we are gonna get anything over 1,500 this year. Families of players. Families of band members (if they are allowed and do go). Some other season ticket holders but you aren’t gonna get many students and even less public/locals.

it is a shame because we did have a lot of early home games and with good weather should have been increased numbers. Add jmu and their 4K. It would have been a nice attendance year.

I, along with others on here may Go to a few games but let’s be honest with ourselves... no one else Is gonna show up to see an average at best fcs program during a pandemic

If you want to win or even semi compete in the caa in sports you need to put money and resources in. They have started doing that when rob and skerry took over.
Back in the day there were no academic support staffers and pregame meals were at the Glenn dinning Hall

Yawn. Who gives a shit how many tickets were given away, but for three games, they marketed the f-ck out of the team and fans showed up. Then we lost those big home games and the crowds shrunk to about half the size.

We do agree that nobody is going to show up save for some students, alums, friends and family.

All I care about at this point is that we can safely have a season without losing half the team to quarantine. If they can get a 1,000 fans to watch them, it's a victory.

Yawn what?  I’m fine if they give away tickets all the time.  More butts in the seats the better it looks. The more money spent on concessions and merchandise. The more likely they will return in the future.

they did market the nova game well and got a good crowd on a beautiful day against a “high name” opponent, in the minds of some fans. A better job needs to be done with the other games. It’s like all or nothing with TU athletics

The good news is that travel for football is as minimal as you can get. Only 1 bus trip over 2.5 hours and zero flights.  3 away games under ~ 75 miles from campus  Cuts down on cost and risk for infection.
