Tyson Walker in the portal

I’m not surprised, nor am I sorry. Having said that, Coach Coen will likely bring in a quality replacement. He is head & shoulders the best coach in the CAA, and it’s not even a close call, IMHO

This transfer stuff is getting out of control. If this culture existed in the glory days of the CAA we never would of had the Gary Neal, Eric Maynor, and JJ Barea’s for more than a season. It makes it almost impossible for a mid major to make a run like Mason and VCU did because as soon as a player has one good season they bolt for a bigger name school.

Can we get some of our guys to enter it?  Maybe even some of the staff too?

It’s debatable whether any of our players enter the portal. Typically, you get players from big programs, looking to get more minutes elsewhere (that’s not us) or you get players from smaller programs who have excelled and want to play on a bigger stage (that’s definitely not us). Who on our roster would be desirable to another D1 program?

You are correct.....but that is the intention of the Power 5. If you believe that any of the Power 5 schools  worry about being "fair" to mid majors, you are sadly mistaken. Do you think they really want to share the NCAA tournament money with Drexel or Mason or Towson. The mid majors are just a fly in the ointment for them. The best thing that could happen is to have the Power 5 break off...make their own rules and let the others make rules that benefit the vast majority of universities and student athletes.

The P5’s are perfectly content with low-mid majors being their farm system. It’s a lazy way for P5’s to get better, at the expense of the low-mid majors. Why worry about recruiting high school kids when you can just sit back and go after low-mid major players who have a proven track record of success at the college level? And with the “sit-1” rule probably being done away with (if it already isn’t) it’s only going to get worse. This may rub some people the wrong way, but the players aren’t blameless either. Loyalty to the school that gave them a scholarship and a platform to showcase themselves often goes right out the window at the first opportunity to jump ship & play on a larger stage. If you’re a low-mid major, maybe the way to go is de-emphasize (not eliminate) recruiting high school players and instead focus more on getting transfers from P5/high-major programs who are transferring because they’re dissatisfied with a lack of playing time. Kind of ironic; the low-mid major kids with stars in their eyes passing the disillusioned P5/high-major kids in the transfer portal as they all look for their next, and in some cases, temporary pit stop. I’m reminded of this kid Pridgen, who after 1 year, is transferring from UNCW, after he transferred there after 1 year at Holy Cross. Next season he’ll be on his 3rd team in 3 years. As someone else said, it’s really like pro sports free agency, without the press conference announcing terms of the new contract.
