I know it's the same old story. You hold a team to 63 points on the road and you need to win the game. Make shots either at the line (10 of 18) or from three-point range (7 of 27) and it's over. They did force us to shoot too many threes and we couldn't make them. By the way, the way we played was the right way. Great ball movement, extra pass and drive and dish for the most part. Two missed FTs by Paar in the first half up four. So many missed open threes by everyone. Wasted a great effort by Cam Holden with 23 points and seven rebounds on 9-of-15 shooting. He was fantastic, but he needs help from the other transfers. Nolan was 3-of-12 and 1-of-8 from long range. We had just eight turnovers and he had three. Some tough off-balance drives off one foot. Would like to see him go mid-range or floater. but as a grad student, he is what he is. He definitely can shoot better.

Frustrated not devastated (for someone reading that). Here are some Skerry quotes after the game on radio:

"We didn't shoot the ball well from 3. Credit to PItt's length. I know we will make shots. I'm disappointed in our defense the last 10 minutes. We had some 50-50 balls we didn't get. We have to be better defensively. I really believe in this group. We didn't come up here just to play hard.

A lot easier if we make 3s and foul shots. Silly fouls. I do believe we have a good shooting group. Defensively, not as good as we needed to be down the stretch.
Our guys are playing hard. I love the group. It's not easy to whip it around on them and take it. I still thought we had some good looks we didn't make. That's part of the game. When that didn't happen, that's where you hang your hat on.

Cam Holden was sensational. He really led us.

These things prepare you for league play. I love the group. They are connected. Have a chance to be a very good club. We'll eventually we will make shots. I thought most were good shots. That happens sometimes."

If there is good news, most of the teams we play won't be as long and big up front as Pitt. Charles Thompson fouls out with no points and I think you get about 8 and 8 in a normal game from him against a mid-major. Though I do think teams will pack it in and play more zone against us to keep Holden, Thompson and Nolan out of the lane. We'll have Gray back as well and he'll help as a key guy off the bench who can hit a 3 occasionally.

Penn lost to Davidson and I’m not surprised.   They were 8-27 from 3.
Davidson is really big.
Need a home win Tuesday.
Not exaggerating cause come Vegas it could be a slaughter. This is the best USF team since they last danced in 98’ and New Mexico always tough assuming they will lose to a UAB with a legit 7ft in their starting lineup and who only lost to South Carolina by 3.

I’m gonna see Morgan State on Monday.  Always fun to talk to a Baltimore fan or two.

Miss Towson so damn much so even despite the heartache this evening I needed to listen and think about Towson.

Bummer we lost, but I still really like this team. Only the 4th game this squad has played together.

Just from the eye test, IQ, ball handling, and ball movement is miles ahead of past skerry teams. More shooters than ever - ball just has to start falling. We’ll be ok.

Agree about the ball movement. The poor shooting is something we've seen before from other guys with poor ball movement. The only thing I think we lack is a go-to-guy down the stretch. That might be Holden though he is a willing passer, which is a good thing.

Uuggh same old story is right. Watch the game with a buddy of mine, a Wake alum who would be more than happy to see an ACC foe get upset. I said to him with about 5 minutes to go "I bet you we still lose by 5."  Sure enough, the ACC refs call a couple of questionable fouls on us and we forget to run any offense and we lost by 4.

WTF was that blocking call - even the ACC network announcers were like that isn't a foul

My first opportunity to watch this year's squad.  Clearly there's an improved level of talent, athleticism and team chemistry up and down the roster.  Unfortunately, it's still a Pat Skerry led team.

A good number of games we win this season will be because we'll have the superior talent on the floor, not because we have superior coaching.  In how many games will we have the coaching advantage?  Winning IN SPITE of your coaching and not BECAUSE of your coaching is a problem. (This applies to Towson football too.)

This was a game we should have won.  Pitt was ripe for the picking.  I'm actually NOT laying this loss at the feet of Pat.  If our team hits a handful more free throws, if they hit a couple more of their insane number of 3's, we win the game.  However, it does beg the question, how come Pat Skerry teams are historically woeful at the free throw line? How come launching ill-advised 3s is a Pat Skerry-approved strategy?

In what's a pretty underwhelming non-conference schedule this would have been the marquee win and we couldn't close the deal.

I think this team will provide a lot of fun moments over the course of the season but Pat Skerry has more than proved himself to be a subpar HC at this level.  I have no faith in him.

SOPS.  Pitt is awful and we still lost. 4 games in but it only looks like 1 of the 3 (impact) transfers is living up to the hype. Holden is legit. Won’t use the players name as to not be mean, but 1 just likes to chuck up shots left and right. He does seem to make some good passes which is a plus. But man the early regression in the transfers and returners on the offensive end is frightening. It gets more difficult to score the further you get in the season during conference play

Sorry 2024 only see two players that could average more than 12 per game on this team, one cause he’s good. The other just due to minutes. 3-4 others in the 6-9 ppg window

Agee with your view on Pat. But this is one of the better non conference schedules. We are playing a lot of teams that are winnable games but no real gimmes like in years past. Monmouth looks good, USF, Ohio state, uncg are also good. Penn is always solid. Kent isn’t bad. Thankfully we aren’t stuck playing d3 and Morgan Loyola umbc teams like in the past

If I have the math right.   Our “5 shooters” are 23-84 from beyond the arc in 4 games

Only a small sample size and I’ve not included Gray who we know can shoot it pretty good.

Look around the college landscape.  I like that we have a bit more talent now and that they share the ball and make better decisions however I still don’t see where this group is gonna light it up from 3 and lets face it opposing teams will force us to shoot more from outside if they know certain guys can’t consistently knock down a 3.  Last night was crazy cause of so many in and outs but I don’t see where this team is all of a sudden gonna be a great perimeter shooting team.

You gotta have a specialist or two off the bench that knocks down 3’s..  the good mid majors all do now.  Pat hasn’t evolved with the game plain and simple. Good guy but did he watch the tape of the UNCW game with Pitt??  Despite playing so so defense late second half and shots not fallen I question what his game plan was.

Are we gonna see more of Hicks, Coleman, Gil and Biekeu in non conference play?  I sure hope so cause we need more depth going forward as the past shows we have a few guys vulnerable to break down.

dont mind me, just here to make lemonade (tricky task with this group !)

We lost in a close game, AT PITT.  which is historically, and STILL is a tough place to play.  (FYI - we covered, again. 3-1 ATS).  I realize Pitt is down  ...but did anyone REALLY have a "W" pencilled in AT PITT (if so, lol....you are in for a looong year).

2021 - not 100% sure of my exact quote, but stand by the thesis:  we got several guys that CAN get 15 on any night (not avg, that would be a dream).  its a small sample size, but you should be able to see the skill level & ability of the guys that can:  Holden, Nolan, Timber, Gibson (cant imagine you'd argue with those 4); and with a decent 3 ball/free throw night, you can add Rizz, Gray, and CT????   I'm just saying, GREAT balance here, like we got good players.  some in the past were just painful to watch.  weight lifters and not ballers.   I wasn't arnd for the Benimon years (have seen highlights,..MONSTA !) - but you gotta like this team more than any since him....no?

and AtlantaTiger; looks like I'm gonna need to add vodka to your lemonade (and/or assist w/ the dump in yur pants):  The entire board is talking about improved talent (coaches apparently hit the transfer wire hard) and ball movement/pace-of-play and you wanna blame the coach after losing AT PITT. 4 games in, conf play yet to start.....hang in there, they aint gonna win'm all, but its gonna be a fun team that will be well north of their pre-season conf ranking.

if anyone needs some positivity arnd the holidayz....i'm be here.  and (may not surprise you), i like our chances v UPENN !
