Top 10 point guards of all time

Recommended Posts

It's that time again when there's little news before July and everyone likes lists (ok, some do). Let's start with my version of the top 10 point guards at Towson (Division I-only). Based on points per game, shooting %, assists, defense, and accolades. I know some guys were combo guards (Scooter Alexander to name one), but I'll stick with more full-time point guards.

1)Devin Boyd (1988-93). Nobody is remotely close. Avg. 17.2 ppg for his career, 3.8apg, 2.3spg. All-time leader in points, assists, and steals. TU HOF. ECC Player of the Year in 1990-91.

2)Marty Johnson (1986-88). Transfer from Richmond. Avg. 4.2 apg and 5.0apg in both seasons. Avg. 16.1ppg in two seasons and shot around 45%. Ranked second in the nation in steals per game with 4.1 in 1987-88. All-time leader in assists per game at 4.6.

3)Bill Leonard (1983-87). Played point most of his career until Marty Johnson transferred in. Avg. 13pg, 2.0 spg, and 3.2 apg. Shot 46% from the field. Three-point shot not added until his final season. TU HOF.

4)Jamaal Gilchrist (2002-04). Transfer from Texas A&M. I know he was more a combo guard his second season with Mike Green at the point. Avg. 11.4 points, 1.5 spg, 3.4 TPG, and 3.3 assists in two seasons at Towson. Shot 36% from 3-point range.

5)Mike Green (2003-05). What might have been. Wound up transferring to Butler and became an All-American. Avg. 10.2 ppg, 4.9apg, 4.4rpg and 1.7spg as a freshman. Made the All-Freshman team and then was moved to shooting guard the following season. Shot 38% from three-point range, but just 36% overall in his second season.

6)Jason Gibson (2019-current). More of a shooting guard, but has played mainly the point in three seasons. A 39% three-point shooter in his career. Avg. 9.2ppg and 2.2 apg. Just 1.4 turnovers per game.

7)Michael Keyes (1993-97). Avg. 7.9ppg, 1.3spg and 3.2apg. Shot 45% from the floor and 37% from 3-point range. Shot over 40% from three-point range in his first two seasons.

8)Jerome Hairston (2012-14). Another player who would have been listed a lot higher had he lasted more than one season and five games. Avg. 9.9ppg and 2.5apg as a freshman with 2.6 TPG. At 6-3, 190, had the size to be a difference-maker.

9)Damon Cason (1995-2000). Injuries limited him early on. Only averaged 5.3ppg for his career, but as a 5th-year senior in 1999-2000, he averaged 8.8 points, 4.3 assists and 1.5 steals on 38% from 3-point range. His numbers went up when Marlin Wise (10 games) was ruled out for the season. He and Wise were teammates here and at Southern HS. Wise was the better athlete and both were good passers. But you had to wonder how his career would have unfolded had they just handed him the keys almost from the jump.

10)Brian Allen (1999-03). Was considering Brian Starr here, because Brian Allen's turnover numbers are poor. In his junior year, he averaged 5.4 turnovers per game, but also averaged 5.3 assists that same season. Avg. 8.1ppg and shot 36% from three-point range, but shot just 32% his last two seasons. Talented player, who was inconsistent.

I came to Towson in 2007 so did not get to see most of these guys. 2 guys that won’t be on anyones list that I enjoyed watching were CC Williams and Tim Crossin. Williams was an athletic freak (who infamously tried a 360 dunk at the end of a blowout loss to George Mason) and Tim Crossin was fun to root for.

I considered CC, but his offense was not good. Poor three point shooter. Good defender but how that team didn’t have a winning record is perplexing to this day considering they had Gary Neal.

This list kinda falls off a cliff after #5. Analogous I suppose to Ambrose’s struggles at bringing in quality QB’s

Hairston was a head case. If we are going that route, let’s add Baltimore’s own…. Troy Franklin!  While kidding, sort of,  he did average 4 assists a game and was pretty damn good during the run to the caa semis (hey we still haven’t made it past that! Closest we came to the finals). But besides that he was a head case as well

Mat, there’s one not here because he never played. But I still believe If Terrance Whiters played with Gary we would’ve made the tournament. He was demolishing  Mike Green in practice during his redshirt year.

One of the many what ifs stories of Towson basketball along with Frank Mason and others, but this was more tragic.

Frank Mason.😞

After you complete your top players listing, you should do your top 5/10 games/moments. I feel like there will be some good conversation on those

I just googled his name & came across an article that a 36 year old with this name was murdered in Baltimore City in August 2019
