Top 10 shooting guards of all time

Recommended Posts

Now, we're in an era of positionless basketball. Shooting guards and small forwards are very similar but back in the day, they were fairly unique. Anyhow, while it was tough finding great, or even good Towson point guards, there were plenty of shooting guards who were extremely productive. Some even played in the NBA and overseas.

Shooting guard

1)Kurk Lee (1988-1990). Put Towson (St.) on the map. On first NCAA Tourn. team in 1990. Western Ky transfer. Averaged over 25ppg. Towson HOFer. All-time leader in FGs in a season with 285.Most points per game in a season (26ppg). He earned East Coast Conference (ECC) Player of the Year honors, was named first-team All-ECC and led the league in scoring and steals both seasons. Averaged 5rpg despite being around 6-1.

2)Gary Neal (2005-07). The greatest shooter in program history. Would be first on this list, but his team never had a winning season in 1.5 seasons. Avg. 25.6 ppg i his two seasons at Towson. Transferred from La Salle after legal issues and wound up at Towson in the 2005-06 season. Had record for most points in a season in 2006-07. Towson HOFer, who spent 6 years in the NBA.  Was a first-team All-CAA selection.

3)Ralph Blalock (1992-96). Played very little in his first season in 1991-92 and then became one of greats to ever play at Towson in the next three seasons. IMO, one of the most talented players to ever play. At 6-2, he could raise above defenders with ease with a perfect jump shot. Averaged around 17ppg those next three seasons.4rpg and 2.5apg in those years. Shot 50% for his career and 40% from three-point range.

4)Terrence Jacobs (1991-93). Juco product who started his career at ODU. Best rebounding guard in the history of the program, who averaged 5.3 in 1990-91 and 7.9 with 2.8 assists in 1992-93. Helped lead the team to two ECC titles and an NCAA trip in 1991. Averaged 23.1ppg in his senior season. Shot 48% from the field. Avg. 15.9ppg as a junior with Devin Boyd in the backcourt. Outstanding defender. Avg. 2.2 spg.

5)Scooter Alexander (1991-96). Talented 6-3 guard from Dunbar, who sat out 1994-95 season. Avg. 15.9ppg and was very adept at getting in the lane and drawing fouls. But shot just 68% from the line. Shot 47% from 2-point range, but just 24% from beyond the arc. Good defender and rebounder (4.6rpg). Also played some point guard and averaged 2.6 apg.

6)Zane Martin (2016-18; 20-21). Powerfully-built guard from Philadelphia. Had an excellent sophomore season where he averaged 19.8 points, 3.5 rpg, 2.7apg on 46% shooting (38% 3pt), but transferred to New Mexico. Returned in 2020-21 and averaged 16.5ppg and 3.5apg, but shot just 39% from the field and 22% from three-point range. Had he stayed, would be much higher on the list. Avg. 13.3 points in three years at Towson. Just 70.5% from the line.

7)Nicolas Timberlake (2018-current). Sixth Man of the Year in 2019-20. First-team All-CAA in 2021-22. Made a huge jump in offensive efficiency from his redshirt sophomore season to last season. Went from 36% shooting to 44% from the field and 32% to 41% in three-point shooting. Very good FT shooter. Went from 66% in his r-freshman year to 80% now. Also averaged a career-high 3.9 rpg. and 14.4ppg. Could move up if he can improve the other parts of his game.

9)Josh Thornton (2007-10). Georgetown transfer and small two-guard at around 6-2, 175. One of the best three-point shooters ever in TU history. Shot 39% from three-point range. Avg 11ppg, but shot just 68% from the line. Had a really strong sophomore season with 13.2ppg, but tailed off, shooting just 39% and 36% from the field in his junior and senior seasons.

10)Four McGlynn (2013-15). Transfer from Vermont who ended his career at URI. A 39% three-point shooter at Towson in his two seasons and 91% from the line. Was automatic at the line so he had the ball in his hands often late in games. Played some point guard, but lack of foot speed limited his ability to drive.

1-5 is damn strong. But again, just like the PG list, it seems to drop off pretty drastically beginning at #6. Not that 6-10 were bad players, but collectively they can’t hold a candle 🕯 to 1-5

Let Nick finish his career and we’ll see if that goes to 1-6…
