Top 10 Centers of all time

Recommended Posts

Here are my top 10 D-1 centers to play at Towson. This turned out to be an easier list than I thought but in our most successful era (1988-94) before now, we were a guard-oriented team. The difficulty I had was finding which order to put these bigs in. So I put more emphasis on defense, which is difficult to quantify on stats.

1)Charles Thompson (2019-current). Made second-team All-CAA in 2021-22 and All-Defensive team the last two seasons. Avg. 7.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg with 1.1bpg on 57% shooting. Strong defender, a bit undersized at 6-7, 245, but has 7-0 wingspan. Really came on last season as he averaged 10.8ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.6bpg on 60% shooting from the field.

2)John James (1990-94). All-time leading shotblocker. Didn't shoot a lot because the guards handled the scoring, but had a nice face-up game. Was just around 190 pounds at 6-8, but very long and had nice timing. Avg 6ppg, 6rpg and 2.1bpg on 49% shooting. His best year was a senior season when he averaged 9.3ppg, 7.7rpg and 2.7bpg. Helped lead the team to four conference titles (two tournament and two reg. season).

3)Dennard Abraham (2005-07). Juco transfer who had two pretty good years with Gary Neal. Avg. 11.6ppg and 6.3rpg on 46% shooting. Not great defensively.

4)Braxton Dupree (2010-11). Maryland transfer averaged 12ppg and 7.9ppg with 1.3rpg. Played just one season. Shot just 48% from the field. Not a great defender, which is why I put Thompson above him. Should have done more at that size (6-8, 270).

5)Timahj Parker-Rivera (2012-16). Undersized big at 6-7, 225, but did play mostly center in his four-year career. Good leaper and offensive rebounder who averaged 5.7ppg and 5.2rpg with 1bpg. Shot 51% from the field. Limited offensively and struggled at the line (55%).

6)Bilal Dixon (2012-13). Providence transfer. Avg 6.9ppg and 7.3 rpg (52% FG) for first winning team in 15 years. Was a key cog on that team as a rebounder, defender, and screen-setter. Played just one season.

7)Nakye Sanders (2018-20). Big man with soft hands at 6-8, 250. Duquesne transfer. Avg. 8.7ppg, and 5.9rpg, shooting 51% from the field in two seasons at Towson.

8)Greg McClinton (1982-86). Long defender at 6-9 who came on late in his career. Avg. 6.2ppg and 3.7rpg, but in senior season averaged 10.8ppg and 5.3rpg with 1.9bpg. Also shot 53% from the field.

9)Robert Nwankwo (2007-12). Former walk-on who became all-time leading rebounder. Also very good shotblocker (1.9per game). Second all-time leader. Did averaged 12.5ppg and 10.1rpg on the 1-31 team in 2011-12. Limited as a shooter, averaging 7.1ppg in his career but did make himself into a solid player.

10)Shaun Holtz (1998-01). Ended up transferring to Ole Miss in his final season where he played sparingly. Good shooter who averaged 9ppg and 4.7rpg. Shot 39% from the field and 28% from beyond the arc (44% from 2pg). Avg. 11.4ppg his final two seasons at Towson. Despite being 6-8, 250 was more of a finesse player.

TJ one of my favorite players.  Rob coming in as a walk on and then getting a scholarship and then “leaving the team” to rejoin under skerry.
Dupree way to high. 1 year. No defense. Shitty attitude and on a bad team
