Top 10 Cornerbacks of all time

Recommended Posts

Once again, FCS-only. What's astounding to me is that there are no cornerbacks in the HOF. NOt in D3, 2 or 1. Now, the number guy will be (assuming he graduated), but after that it will be tough because two of the top 3 didn't graduate Towson. So in this case, I'm going on production at Towson along with accolades, but I can't ignore guys like Chad Scott and Madieu Willams, who were very good at Towson became great players at Maryland. Williams

1)Tye Smith (2011-14). First-team All-American in 2014. First-team All-CAA in 20014, second-team in 2013, third-team in 2012. Fifth-round pick in 2015 by Seattle. Is still in the NFL. Last team played for: Minnesota. Excellent tackler for a corner. Ranks fourth all-time in tackles with 330. Had 10 against LSU In 2012. Didn't have a lot of interceptions because teams didn't throw at him often.

2)Jordan Love (2012-13). A transfer from Georgia with great size at 6-1, 185. Named second-team All-American in 2013. First-team All-CAA in 2013 and 2012. Returned nine kickoffs in 2012 for a 20.6 yards per return average. Had 99 tackles with two picks and 15 pass breakups in two seasons.

3)Jabari Garrett (1996-99). Underrated corner who at just 5-9 recorded 229 tackles and four fumble recoveries with eight interceptions. Named first-team All-PLL in 1999, 1998 and 97. Another who should probably be in HOF.

4)Chad Scott (1993-94). A 6-1, 195-pound corner who played his first two seasons with the Tigers before transferring to Maryland. He then had a long career in the NFL. Had 72 tackles and 8 pass breakups including five picks in his senior season. But that doesn't tell the real story of how good he was at the end of the scholarship era. Towson went non-scholarship after that season and he made the right move to transfer. Teamed with Marcellus Campbell for the second-best corner duo in history after Smith and Love.

5)Allante Harrison (2002-05). First-team All -A10 in 2005. Second-team in 2004. Had 10 picks to rank tied for seventh all-time. Speedy corner with good coverage skills. Excellent special teams player.

6)Marcellus Campbell (1991-94). Strong corner who racked up 179 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries. Had five picks in his career and 27 pass breakups. Played for some very good teams.

7(Ricky Crestwell (1998-2000). Second-team All-PL in 2000. Had six picks and two returned for TDs. Prseason-second team All-American in 2000 by The Sporting News. Good hitter and great tackler. In 1999, set school records with two interceptions returned for a touchdowns and most INTs return yards in a season. Had 143 tackles and 28 pass breakups.

8)Davon Telp (2001-03). Speedy corner who had six picks and three returns for TDs. Second-team All-PL in 2003.

9)Madieu Williams (1999-2000). Gifter corner who eventually would transfer to Maryland and became an All-American safety. Had 98 tackles with 17 pass breakups. Would have had more production in two seasons but was hampered by injuries in 2000.

10)Donald Wood (1998-2001). Solid corner, who had six picks in his career..

Mike was a free safety. I covered Dustin Harper, Julian Blair and Marcellus Campbell at corner on those teams in the late 80s and early 90s.

Forgot about Julian Blair -- he was a good player too. (And he was the last guy to touch the ball on that crazy kickoff return against Northeastern as time ran out, which set up the miracle win (Crowley to Orlando TD) on the untimed final play after the penalty on NE.

Good player but probably better as a returner. If I ever decide to make that list, he would be on it.
