MBB takes care of business on the road against NC A&T 79-67

Nygal Russell scored 18 points and Nicolas Timberlake added 17 as the seniors took over in the second half to lead Towson over North Carolina A&T 79-67 on Thursday night in North Carolina.

This game would have been a complete blowout if not for Aggies' guard Kam Woods, a juco transfer who put up 29 points on 9-of-18 shooting (5-10 3pt) in 40 minutes and drove Towson defenders crazy all night with his range and quickness. After a 40-35 halftime lead over the Aggies, the Tigers played better overall defense. NC A&T made 8 of 20 from 3pt range overall (40%), but just 3 of 8 in the second half and 45% overall. Towson actually shot better in the first half (18 of 31) and wound up shooting 52.5% for the game. Sekou Sylla, getting his sixth straight start, was a force with 15 points and six rebounds. Charles Thomspon started slow but finished with 13 points and nine rebounds with two steals.

Towson improves to 5-2 in the CAA and 13-7 overall. They will face Elon on Saturday at 4pm.

Good road win against a dangerous team that already beat Hofstra on the road with a big crowd (and angry at times). Only major critique would be that we fouled too much in the first half. Christian May and Ryan Conway both got called for fouls on three-point shooters. May seems to be the player that needs a transition dunk or open 3 to get him going, especially on the road. I still think he needs to move more and cut to the basket instead of just standing on the three-point line. With that kind of vertical, he needs to get more looks in the paint. Of course, he's probably only around 200ish, but he's not rail thin. Good thing is that Conway is not shy about shooting and he hit a mid-range shot with two assists (great look to Nic for 3) and two turnovers. Hicks had two nice drives in the first half and tried to defend Woods. He did have three steals. Cam was very quiet with just four points and two rebounds in 25 minutes. Good thing is that he had just two turnovers with three assists and we scored 79 points without him.

Russell was stellar tonight. It's cool seeing him make 3s, but he's around a 32-33% 3-point shooter. It would be nice for him to get up to 35%, but to me, his role is to defend, rebound some and slash to the basket. He's finally starting to finish those drives and get put backs. I know he has had some injury concerns before and maybe he's getting healthier.

Finally, had 11 assists tonight. We actually came into the game leading the league with 13.84 assists per game.

This was the type of win a veteran laden team gets you; in a hostile environment against essentially a one man gang. I particularly liked the fact that every time Agriculture made a run, we weathered the storm and held them at bay until we finally delivered the knockout punch.

A lot of positives-Sylla was strong finishing close to the basket; CT nearly had a double double; NT made some big shots; Conway continues to be a consistent scoring threat and I thought Hicks had a solid game, with a couple of steals and assists and even scoring a couple points. But the star was Russell, who’s become the unsung hero of the team, with his scoring, rebounding and D.

Hofstra smoked UNCW tonight, so we’re in 3rd place, just a 1/2 game behind Hofstra, who’s played 1 more conference game than us at this point. Let’s make this a Tobacco Road two-step by beating Elon Saturday & come home with momentum on our side

Thanks to Conway (48%), Timberlake starting to get hot (33.5%) and even Russell (32.5%), we came into the game as the fourth team in the CAA at 34.2% from three-point range. NC A&T was third by the way at 34.4% and they shot it well tonight. The three-point defense (33.9%) still needs work (7th), but has gotten better. UNCW is the top defensive team in the league, allowing 30.4% from 3-point range and despite getting destroyed by Hofstra tonight, they allowed less than 30% from 3-point range. But they gave up 52% from the field. Elon, then NE (always a tough matchup for us), and then W&M before we meet up with the Pride again. Can't take anyone lightly.

I’m happy when you Show up, Even with that incoherent blabber. Because that means they likely won.  Solid team win. Didn’t play well on defense most of the game and still pulled one out late.

But win in march or it’s just the same old same. 3-10.
