FB Adds 10 new players on Late Signing Day

Does seem underwhelming, though I think the spring is going to be about evaluation. After that, I'd expect them to sign at least 5-6 FBS players and likely one QB. If you checked West Florida roster in 2022, they had around 30 FBS/FCS transfers. So, I'm a bit surprised we have so few, but a lot of them should come later.

Coach hired late in the game. from a d2 to a dormant program.  It is what it is at this point

I have to be honest, I know it might be alarming if there is a big dropoff from six wins to something markedly worse. However, what I really want to see in year one is how coaches up and tries to develop players. Maybe I am wrong, but I feel like Rob did a pretty good job of getting high level talent into our program. However, in recent times the QB spot was a mess, and there were even times where we more shorthanded than I hoped (based on preseason expectations) at running back and receiver. When things went well for Rob the offensive line was a huge reason for our success, and he never really recaptured that magic in the same way after the title run. I also feel like we always had a lot of defensive talent, and while we could generate big turnovers we never had a really strong overall defensive unit.

Three big things I would like to see is 1) more of a cohesive defensive unit 2) Clean games where we limited turnovers and penalties, which are usually hallmarks of good coaching despite talent level 3) Player development, which I think Rob did well in the early stages but the last 3-4 years I feel like our roster completely flipped over year-to-year. That is probably more of a trend everywhere with NIL and transfer portal stuff, but we need to manage it effectively.

I think the recruiting will come, but it takes every coach a year or so to get the system working at full steam. Hopefully, we can get in enough talent for the fall to make sure we don't step all the way back into rebuilding year. The one thing new coaches do is actually make watching spring football relevant. I am interested to hear what the vibe will be like and how Coach Shinnick runs things.

I'm going to try and find some tips from each recruit. Let's also remember that last year's 6-5 team needed to keep some key guys: ILB Mason Woods, WR Isaiah Perkins, OL Dan Volpe, to name a few. I honestly expected Jesus Gibbs to go to the NFL so it's a bit surprising that he was in the portal. His best offer thus far was from Fresno State, but as far as I know, he hasn't signed with them yet.

So with Volpe gone, we obviously needed a left tackle. For some reason, Campbell DB Mike Swain was not on the list even though he committed on Jan. 19. Freshmen are likely not going to help next season. If a lot play, then we are in trouble.

1)ILB Alijah Bivans (5-11, 220). I still think we might add the kid from West Florida, though maybe after the second semester. Bivans runs a 4.65, which is important considering his lack of size. Good weight room numbers (455 deadlift, 285 bench).

https://www.hudl.com/profile/8045389/Alijah-Bivans

Offers: Robert Morris, Bowie State. Expectation? Special teams and depth.

2)DL Shamir Boyd (6-2, 290), Fr-Voorhees, NJ. Also played OL and maybe will end up playing center or guard.

Offer: Assumption. Expectation: PWO?

3)OL K.J. Brooks (6-3, 290). Fr with long wingspan from Good Counsel. Will likely end up at guard.

Offers from Furman, Sacred Heart, Merrimack, Del State, Marist. Expecattion? Redhirt

4)QB Sean Brown (6-2, 200), R-Junior Liberty. Three-star QB coming out of Middle Creek, NC. Played two games as a freshman.

Offer after Transfer: Bryant  Offense out of HS: Bucknell, Campbell, and VMI. Assumption: Compete for starting job in the spring.

5)DL R.J. Evans (6-1, 285). R-Junior Arkansas Pine-Bluff

Starter with 32 tackles in 2022.

Expectations: Starting or in rotation on the D-line.

6)LB Matthieu Longa (6-1, 200) Quince Orchard H.S.

Freshman linebacker with 4.6 speed and a 315 bench, but will need to add size next season.

Was offered by Towson two years ago along with ODU and Austin Peay.

7)OL Ian Markham-Miler (6-3, 310) St. John's D.C.

Second-team All-WCAC

Offers: IUP

Expectations: Redshirt

8)DL Rion Roseborough (6-2, 315)  Greenville, N.C

4.9 40yrd 345 bench 515 squat  3.3 GPA

Offers: Wagner. Campbell, Bluefield State

Expectations: Redshirt though might have the size and strength to be a rotation play.

9)DL Tylen Wallace (6-3, 300). Grad student who played five years at Missouri Western State.

20 tackles and 5.5 TFLs last season.

Offers: Mostly D2. Expectations: Rotation player.

10)K/P Carden Williams. Kickoff specialist from West Florida, who had 33 touchbacks last season.

So bottom line, no WRs, RBs, no DBs unless you count Swain. Mostly linemen and players who will redshirt. A little surprising at the low number which also means a lot of guys are coming back. The spring will be about the evaluations of the current players and then it's back to the drawing board for Coach Pete and his staff.

Aside from adding more talented skill position players and a left tackle, which starters (part-time and rotation guys) do we think are returning? Guys who are redshirt seniors have a year left due to COVID.

KR/PR D'Ago Hunter.

WR Isaiah Perkins

WR Jabari Allen (inj.) ?

WR Da'Kendall James

TE Malik Jackson

RB Joachim Bangda

RB Hunter

RB Devin Matthews

QB Scott Smith/Zach Jackson

OL Ralph Paige Jr. (C or G)

OL Mathias Adjingbaruk (C or G)

OL Joden Nelson (3* G/C)

OL Alex Desire

OL Florian Staehler

(major issue. Still haven't added a transfer who can play right away).

LB Daniel Ramond

LB Ryan Kearney

LB Mason Woods

DL Ernie Smith

DL Oly Okombi

(yes, D-line is an issue if Gibbs doesn't return, but it's why they added two potential starters)

CB Sean Tucker (inj. last year)

CB Rober Javier

CB Charles People (inj.)

CB Shafeek Smith

S/CB Dorian Davis

S Xavier terry

S Evan Rutkowski

Hopefully most of them, given, as you pointed out, that none of the incoming recruits appear to be impact players & none of them are skill players. I’m not going to stress at the moment, as I will assume they’re going to bring in a lot of FBS and FCS transfers after spring semester. If we don’t, then I’ll stress big time 😆

They need players. They can't rely on freshmen or we'll be in serious trouble. But as for the transfer portal, most of the key guys that were attainable were gone by the time these guys settled in. So there's always a next batch after the spring when guys realize they aren't starters on their own FBS team and they transfer down. Many of our best transfers came after the spring. Flacco was the best, but I think Sean Tucker from ECU will be a nice addition since he was injured last season. Hopefully, Pete and his staff can find his own Flacco, Tucker, Gibbs, etc. I would think a receiver would want to play for us since we'll be throwing it 40-50 times next season based on Brian Sheppard's history at Stetson, VMI, Norther Arizona and Indiana State. I think Sam Reynolds is also a guy that can be utilized more in this offense. Will need a dynamic runner to mesh with Bangda unless they move Reynolds to RB.
