2023-24 Transfer Thread

Honestly, Bo Montgomery's numbers last season weren't that bad. I don't look at career numbers because you think these guys get better (just like Timberlake) as they mature. Shooting 43% from the field and 34% from three-point range, I know it seems like Nygal Russell, but 37% from 3pt the year before. More concerned with 66% free throw shooting though he only got to the line 68 times in 32 games. If a guy is not a great shooter, you'd like to see him get to the line. Either way, we're looking (not even offering) a ton of guys. I don't think you just "look" at the perfect player, who shoots 45% of more from the field and 38% or more from 3pt. Not many of those guys are available.

Now Dontrez Styles is a different story. Definitely a long shot but 6-6, 210 small forward. You can move him to 4 at times and play May with him. Only averaged around 5 minutes for UNC last season as a sophomore, but played a decent amount in the NCAA Tourney last season as a freshman.

The 6-foot-6 Kinston native played sparingly in two seasons with the Tar Heels. The sophomore is best known for his contributions in the 2022 NCAA Tournament as a freshman. Styles averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 19.5 minutes against Marquette and Baylor in March Madness. He averaged 1.4 points per game in two seasons, appearing in 30 games as a freshman before playing 15 as a sophomore.

In fairness, I took a deeper dive into Montgomery’s numbers. He did score 21 points vs Creighton (I think he hit 5 3’s) and his scoring avg has gone up every year, so perhaps he is worth a look

Another long shot but better chance than Styles I would assume. Leggett is from the DMV (P.G. County) and we offered him out of HS. Shooting numbers not great, but in CAA could be better. Very good FT shooter and gets to the line a ton. We're so desperate for a penetrating guard and somebody who can create his own shot.

Kam Woods (17.3ppg, 3.7apg, 34% 3pt) and r-freshman Chase McDuffie (6-5, 210), who played sparingly last season are in the portal from NC A&T.

3 of the top 5 CAA scorers (Nelson, Woods, Timberlake) now in the portal. We are basically a farm team/feeder system for larger conferences (although we do get guys coming down the ladder, like Estrada, for example),

Speaking of Estrada, the other top 2 scorers in the conference top five are him and his teammate, Thomas. They’ve both “only” played 4 years of college ball, so I guess they can both play a 5th year. I’d be surprised if Estrada doesn’t turn pro, but you never know. As for Thomas, I could see him returning to Hofstra, especially if Estrada moves on, as he would likely be a 20+ ppg guy

Kam Woods jacks up a lot of shots and makes under 40% of them. Not a huge fan, wherever he goes, he's going to have to play more team-oriented.

Gonna be interesting to see where he lands. What a crazy world we live in that a Towson guy has UNC, UMD, and Ohio State fighting over him

Tell the staffs to bring their wallets. Cha-Ching. Don’t get me wrong, he might as well cash in

I love this thread aka the Hot Stove League..  appreciated!

Watching and listening to all the games past 4 days with the insights etc..  I agree with Mat now that you have to build via the portal.  Yes sprinkle in some kids you develop as freshman but teams like FDU and so many others were built by the portal.
