Well, the proverbial cat is out of the bag now. Last May, he was granted Probation Before Judgment for a 4th Degree sex offense, & was found guilty of 2nd degree assault. I have no clue if his apparent departure from the team is linked to his criminal case, but sometimes 2+2 still equals 4. Did the university get some blowback about letting him back on the team? We may never know the truth, but there is the appearance that letting him back on the team, then dismissing him, was clumsily handled by the university

So the score isn't alarming. This was a better team than Rutgers and Ric Pitino teams normally press. Some people will say, they went 5-of-23 from 3pt. We will miss Conway. I don't if he would have played much and I really don't know the situation (everyone is mum). But not a lot of positives. Lowery and May came off the bench. Tarke and Embeya started. Good news was that Messiah Jones did play and had five points and seven rebounds in 13 minutes. Lowery and Williamson really struggled. Mekhi played 26 minutes, went 0-of-6 from the field, 0-1 from 3pt, 0-2 FT, had six rebounds with a block. DWill had 7 pts, 3-of-7 FG, 1-3 3pt, 0-1 FT, 2 reb, 1 assists and 6 turnovers in 29 minutes.

Embeya fouled out in 16 minutes. Not a surprise. At least he had four 4pts and 3 boards. Probably not going to get much from him and Samb early on. I wonder if Cole, who had 3pts in garbage time will play at all because he can shoot. Or will the rs him. Ndefo also played 2 minutes in garbage time.

Forgot to mention Sulaiman got the start and went 0-4 from 3pg and had just one rebound in 19 minutes. Did have two steals and no fouls. Saint Mary's is big and physical. Normally I would start Lowery, May, Tejada, DWill and Jones/Embeya, but I don't mind Tomiwa starting in that game. Of course, it would be nice if his strong shooting over the summer and fall translated to when it really matters.

Granted, it was only an exhibition game, and perhaps St. John’s is a very good team, but the stats from this game are discouraging-28% from the floor, including just barely over 20% from 3; a whopping 25 turnovers; and Tejada & May were a combined 7-25; Lowery and Suliman a combined 0-10. But, here’s a shocker…we out rebounded them 😆

I’d say we’re in mid season form 😆.

On to St. Mary’s

No way in the world should we be preseason favorites.  Who on this team can shoot from deep?  Losing Conway is a crusher.  I can see a .500 season where we are bottom 10% in all of D1 in assists and 3 point percentage.  Another year, another rock fight team.  Zero skill at guard except DWill at times…..once again a bunch of wings with similar skill sets….

Don’t be a fence sitter, how do you really feel? 😆

Seriously though, I share your concerns. I find being the preseason #1 in the conference, according to some pundits, odd & probably the kiss of death. I also have serious concerns about our shooting, though that’s a concern with us going into every Skerry season. Conway’s loss does take away perhaps our best 3-point shooter. And yes, probably lots of rock fights this season. As I believe more than one opposing coach has said about us, our best offensive play is a missed shot, which is why I am dismissive of the fact that we usually rate high nationally in rebounding, as that is a function of rebounding so many missed shots on offense
