Football falls to No. 5 Villanova 14-13

Keegan Vaughn missed a 37-yard field goal with four seconds left to allow Villanova to edge Towson 14-13 on Saturday from Villanova Stadium. Pete Shinnick decided before that game to start Sean Brown, the Liberty transfer, who had thrown 10 passes in his four previous seasons. Brown led the team down the field with their first possession and hit Carter Runyon for a touchdown pass. But he struggled after that in the first half as the TIgers went into halftime tied at 7-all.

In the second half, Brown gave the team a shot to win, but he had several dropped passes and once again, with the ball at the one-yard line, the Tigers could not get the ball in the end zone. Before they got there, Brown hit Lukkas Londono for an easy touchdown pass in the end zone, but Londono dropped the ball and apparently never saw it due to the sun. Backup left tackle Jaelin Montgomery also had a false start there, forcing a field goal by Vaughn.

Vaughn missed two field goals with a chance to win. One was a career long 48 and the other at the end was a 37-yarder. The WIldcats were in a giving mood, fumbling the ball away twice, including one with around a minute left that gave the Tigers that last-second shot.

Brutal loss against a team that was shall we say, over ranked? But these are the games you need to come up with wins.

Credit the defense for keeping Towson in the game. Last year, they gave up 33 points on the road in this game and to day, just 14 and 351 totals yards. Brown completed 20 of 36 for 233 and a TD. Devin Matthews ran for 135 yards on 14 carries. But their inability to run the ball on short-yardage is incredibly perplexing considering the fact that they used a fullback today (Brockman Wallace), with Matthews and still can't get in. Maybe it's time to go with a quarterback keeper.

Awful play calling, bad times penalties, and easy dropped balls by WRs are why they lost. Yes the kicker was awful, but it shouldn’t have come to that.

Defense played well and bent a lot but never really broke against a good team. The backup qb was good, and threw some great passes. Dude has played in like 3 games in 5 years and more than held is own.

Do we even have an offensive coordinator? If so he should have a pink slip awaiting on auburn drive in 2.5 hours.  The play calling was questionable at best.
That was an extremely long game and those refs were not good. There should have been a few more flags on us. But their guys hitting the turf late and clock stopping…?

Heck of a fight but another year eliminated from payoffs.  6 years and counting & 11 years since the last victory.

Sadly, you’re probably right. We lose next week to NDSU, and will come home 1-3 to play W&M. Lose that game and the season, in terms of playoffs aspirations, is basically over, as we’d have to run the table at that point (7-0) to finish 8-4. Let me see a show of hands of those who think we’ll go 7-0

You know as far as today, I’d rather get blown out than lose like this. I’m keeping in mind these are kids who are trying their best, but the combination of missed FG’s, soul crushing penalties and dropped passes was pitiful. Now as far as the coaching, I’m flummoxed at some of the play calling decisions on offense. I wasn’t a huge fan of this hire to begin with. The 1st year free pass is over & it’s time for tangible results. I don’t want to hear about moral victories, because today wasn’t one in any event.

Penalties and mental miscues happen  for Towson Athletics at what seems to be the worst time, when the games on the line.

I agree with you, this is on the coaching. How many 3rd down and 1-2 yards did we try and throw a deep pass on? Atleast 3. That’s fine if you are going to go for it in 4th down, but we didn’t. Settling for all those fg attempts with let’s face it, a pedestrian kicker, isn’t going to win games.

For shinick being an “offensive” guru coach, it seems like our defense does more than this air raid offense. Nova is 5th ranked but it’s 2024 and this level of this sport is watered down

But some will post here about it being a moral victory and the coach is new.  Rinse wash repeat.

Just a brutal way to lose

We agree to an extent and at some point, Sheppard has to be accountable. Yes, they have a backup QB and a third-string LT. His play calls at the goal line aren't working. Try something else. So he did on second and goal and Brown didn't have anybody open. The Matthews got stopped on third down and Jaelin Montgomery moved on 4th and 1, forcing the FG attempt. Pete designed an offense in West Florida and needs to take charge more during the game.

Yes, their players were INJURED? at the end and the clock stopped as if it was a regular timeout. But karma liked us but we couldn't take advantage. Their color commentator works for VIllanova so I'd take some of the calls he was bitching about with a grain of salt. Either way, they weren't impressive and we should have taken that game.

Ok. Looks like we had a chance to win and only lost by a point. Different results than year despite the loss but the team is competitive. Don’t get all the gloom and doom so early on in the season and in this man’s hire. Rather have these losses we can learn from than blowouts honestly. ARETE!

Ok so we do agree on basically everything this time….
That wasn’t the only drive with questionable play calling.  Have an all American TE and he was on the sideline most third downs in the first half

Im not saying they weren’t injured, but with that little time left, shouldn’t they have to use a TO?  Especially with clock actively running?

The good news is that we have a bye after ND State, who is struggling to beat ETSU on the road (down 28-25 with 1:08 left in the third qtr). I assume Davis will return after the bye week, but at some point, you start to lose confidence in an offense that has regressed, putting up 20 points against Cincinnati.
