Adams (de) commits

Recommended Posts

Interesting. 5’8 “water bug” type from the Windy City. Watched one of his highlight clips online & looks like he can really break a D down with his penetration. Also looks like he could make life miserable on D for the opposition PG trying to bring the ball upcourt. Don’t know anything about his offensive game, but if he can penetrate the lane & dish, & be an irritant on D, that’s a good start.

So, at the moment, we’re done with the 2019 recruiting class (only 2 scheduled openings are when McNeill & Alex Thomas graduate after this season). Given the way kids transfer these days, I wouldn’t be surprised if we have at least 1 more ship to fill when all’s said and done.

Adams was an internet phenom at an early age. Was hearing from big time D1 programs as a high school freshman. Then his older brother died & his game tailed off. He put things back together as a HS senior, making 2nd team all-Chicago met. His team lost the city championship to Simeon (perennial Chicago powerhouse) but went on to win the State championship in its Class. He averaged 13ppg & 5 assists playing in what I would assume is one of the best public school leagues in the country. He chose to go the prep school route, & will be playing at Link Year Prep, in Missouri this season, before starting his freshman season at TU beginning in the fall of 2019.

Reminds me a little of the "crimestopper", Aquille Carr as well as Kurk Lee Jr., though he's bigger than those guys. Carr was so good that crime would stop in Baltimore because everybody wanted to watch him. Unfortunately, he never went to college.

He looks like he's going to be a lot of fun to watch but doesn't have play next year with Howard and Dottin in front of him. Definitely needs to work on D. Haven't seen much of a 3-point shot.

Almost forgot about Charles Thompson, the 6-8 center from Virginia that committed in mid-August. Here is an updated scouting report from ESPN.

Strengths:
Right now, Charles' strength is centered on his size and length. Charles also stays near the basket where he is best suited right now - and hopefully will be in the future. Charles is willing to battle inside and, unlike some less bellicose classmates his size, does not seem inclined to drift to the perimeter. In other words, Charles is a 6'8 player who wants to play in the post. Perfect.

Weaknesses:
Charles is only effective offensively up to 6-feet from the basket as a sophomore. Currently, Charles is too foul-prone, needing to develop his feet to more properly position himself against basket intruders by land or by sky. Skill development across the board is a necessity here, as is the aforementioned footwork needed to augment his size and bulk (220 and counting).

Bottom Line:
Charles, like most big men in the current sophomore class (Class of 2019) is like an unfinished portrait - not done yet. Maturation of mind and body we hope will prevent foul trouble and inconsistency. Spending a lot of time with the basketball developing a move and a counter would stamp Charles a prospect with great size - already in place - and budding skills; that is always a combination desired at the next level.
