why we lost 4 of our last 5

Recommended Posts

1. Defense continued to give up big plays

1a. Poor tackling  (see Heyward, Robert, on DU's first TD).

2. Flacco holds the ball too long, takes sacks instead of throwing it away

2a. Flacco forgot all about Sam Galahan -- looked too often for Shane/Jabari when SG was open across the middle

3. Poor coaching -- inability to make in-game adjustments

3a. Weak play calling when we have the ball inside the 5 (see Maine game, final series; Duquesne game, prior to the half)

I'll have more later but it starts with a system that isn't gong to work in the rain unless you have an incredible line and big running backs. We don't. Yeedee was hurt today but we should have used big Ellis Knudson on a couple of more wildcat plays. He's 260 pounds or even Stover. There's no excuse for that defensive effort. Awful. And yes, you know it was going to rain, maybe the offense should have come out running more power, using Ellis as a FB. Whatever, they were running wasn't going to work even though they should have scored 17 points had Shane not fumbled at the one. The second half, it rained like Elon in 2015 and we just couldn't adjust. Couldn't pass it.

Also, let's be honest. We all were worried about the weather conditions and this was not a game suitable for Tom. Maybe Joe, who seems to thrive in the rain but Tom was inaccurate and when he finally hit guys late in the game, there were at least 6 or 7 drops in the torrential downpour. That weather may be an excuse for the offensive ineptitude but not the D. If that game is played in dry weather, they are still probably running all over us and their QB would have had a much better game.

The primary theme I would like to focus on when it comes to Towson athletics, as a whole, is “clutch”.  Towson teams tend to not be clutch.  When we have our opportunity to really step up and shine, more often than not, we find a way to come up short.  Please someone remind me the last truly big win a Towson team has had.  A truly “clutch” win when everything was at stake.  I’m still pissed we couldn’t get it done against Ohio State in lacrosse Final Four in May 2017.
