We’re just good enough to lose

Recommended Posts

There’s a difference between being athletic and being a talented basketball player. We don’t need guys with measurables, who can jump out of the building and are muscled up. We need guys who can shoot. Or, in the alternative, we need guys who can shoot. On the other hand, we need guys who can shoot. Then again, we need guys who can shoot. Put another way, we need guys who can shoot.

I know we need shooters but you can't have five lead-footed shooters out there like Four McGlynn. Basketball is still a game of quickness, esp. at the guard spot. UNCW won because they pushed the ball and had a million 6-2 to 6-6 guards that can shoot the 3. They were pretty athletic. Charleston had a skilled but athletic backcourt last year of Riller/Chealey. Now you have Buie/Wright-Foreman/Pemberton. All athletic. Good shooters who are slow ain't working in this league in the backcourt.

I know people think PS is obsessed with athleticism and strength. And to a point he its. But this team not very athletic. Our best athlete in terms run and jump was Timberlake. He played in nine games this year. Betrand is a pretty good athlete (40 inch vertical?) but it doesn't show on the floor. He takes weird angles to the basket and pretty much shows the ball to a point where he's predictable. He's getting better defensively though. Hopefully he becomes stronger and improves his overall game next year. PS likes him because he's not turning the ball over lately. But he's not the future starting two-guard the way he's playing. There's no reason not play to start him though because you want to see what you have and what he needs to work. While he may have something like 12 assists and one turnover over his last four games, he's taking bad shots that might as well be turnovers. McNeil is a slightly above-average athlete. He's not super fast but he has some length but he's not exactly known for his incredible leaping ability.

Fobbs is the type of player we need. Even though he's too-left handed, he's strong as an ox. athletic and can shoot. We need three more guards like Fobbs.

The point guards aren't that fast. Dottin is very strong and lowers his shoulder but he's not particularly quick or fast. Same with Howard, A bit quicker because he's about 10 pounds lighter. As most have figured out, he's not a true point. He's a sixth man off the bench and a 2-guard.

Thomas (6-9, 275) was super unathletic before the hip injury. Tunstall is athletic but it seems like's not quite as explosive with the added weight and the off-season surgery. Solomon is fairly athletic but can't seem to finish underneath probably because he's not strong enough. Sanders is unathletic but pretty strong.

Sometimes we judge books by their covers. Just because you look a certain way, doesn't mean you're athletic. We're not. We rarely run and we're one of the slowest paced teams in the nation, partially due to injuries and lack of depth. Pat knows we need skilled players. He's been saying over the last month or so after games (save for the Drexel game when we shot lights out). Athletic guards who are skilled and can score is what we need. Better passers would be nice as well. I don't think there's a willing passer on the entire team other Al and that's because he can't really move.

And that’s on the staff. Also, other teams with no depth play with faster pace.

NE WM Elon Drexel yeah more athletic than us..

I do like the way betrand has played the last few games

let’s not kid ourselves, it’s Groundhog Day, some good juco or transfer comes in they are gone by the time a few freshman are ready to play and contribute. Off schedule

I agree that the pace is way too slow unless you have Thomas on the floor. He simply can't run or even walk. They slowed the pace down after the Bahamas due to turnovers and it worked to an extent. They are trying to push it more now after rebounds but if you don't have guards who can make plays in transition, it really doesn't matter if you push it or slow it down. Should they push it even more going into the tournament, especially when they have Dottin and Betrand starting? 100% yes. It may not always end up in good results but those guys need to run.

Chicken or the egg. If you find a good transfer, you have to take a chance but when you start trying to fill needs like point guard, it doesn't seem to work out for us.
