mat1992 Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=548362&vislive=tows Tomiwa Sulaiman slammed home an offensive rebound with 32 seconds left to lead Towson over UNCW 65-61 in overtime on Thursday night. Towson starts conference play at 1-0 and improved to 6-8 on the season. Tyler Tejada led the Tigers with 21 points. They'll now face Charleston on the road on Saturday at 2pm. Some comments from Pat Skerry after the game on TowsonTigers.com "That's a good team. Well coached. Could have gone either way. Proud of our guys effort. Rebounded and defended it well. Didn't have our best night shooting it. Played against a lot of big teams. That kid Obioha was terrific tonight (for UNCW). Great plays. Big rebounding numbers. May and Sulaiman. Back to playing Towson basketball. " On Sulaiman's dunk "Top 10 Tiger basket of all time. Suliaman with dunk follow." Tejada likes the moment showed it late." "I still know we can shoot the ball better than we're shooting it. Samb and Hicks all night helped us. Abdou was tremendous in the first half. Hicks good minutes all around. Great program win. Great team win. Everyone tried to bury us. Didn't realize we were seeds" 1 1 Quote
Bay Area Tiger Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 Needed that win. Fun listen and chat with the diehards. “Seeds that were buried” 📻😃 House 💰 come Saturday. No way DWill shoots 2-17 against Charleston. 2 Quote
mat1992 Posted January 3 Author Report Posted January 3 Look, this was an excellent win but I'm not throwing a parade because this league is just not very good. Look at Hofstra tonight losing by 18 at home to W&M. No other huge surprises except maybe Campbell over Drexel at home. Bottom line is that if we have a strong defensive center, we're not going OT. Obioha killed us with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Got away with a few things but he was dominating us to the point where we needed a double due to all the foul trouble and he's 7-0, 280. But some of the biggest plays all night were on the defensive end *Hicks tonight was phenomenal. Don't look at the stats, watch the game. Pat played offense-defense many times down the stretch and it worked. Hicks had just three points in 16 minutes, but who cares. He ran the offense. Even if he had no assists. He had two steals and no turnovers. His defense was exceptional. *Jones did his best to defend Obioha. He was just too big. But six points is six points. *Sulaiman had 10 rebounds including six offensive in 24 minutes. Needed that hustle. *Embeya made some huge defensive plays at the end with his length. Shockingly or not shockingly, they had him for no steals even though he deflected at least two passes down low but I guess didn't corral the ball. *Rebounding was incredible. 50-40 on the boards won the game (old formula). On the bad side. *OMG. Dylan Williamson probably shouldn't be taking that shot at the end of regulation when you're 2 for a million. Ok, he ended dup 2 for 17 from the field and 2 for 9 from beyond the arc. I'm giving that ball to Tejada, who started out 3 for 11 and finished 7 of 21. Needs to take more shots in the lane. *Tarke played 21 minutes but at least had 7 points and five rebounds on 3-of-5 shooting. Still had the worst +/- on the team at -10. Hicks was +11, while Tejada and Jones were +13. Shot 35.2% from the field and 8-of-28 (28.6%) from long range. Look it's great to win this game with the old formula, defense and rebounding. They shot just 33.9% from the field and 33.3% (8-24) from beyond the arc. They have some good guards in Corbin and Newby but they miss Trazerian White and who wouldn't? He's a great player now at TCU. But ultimately, will need to shoot the ball better and not just rely on D and killing teams on the boards. They aren't likely to dominate Charleston and Brzovich on the board so will need to shoot it much better. I'll take a split but would like to play much better on offense against them. Quote
TSU88 Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 (edited) I’ll give credit where credit is due. Tonight’s game is usually the type we lose. Instead it was UNCW who yakked a 7 point lead with a little over 3 minutes left. If you would have told me before the game that DWill and TT would combine for 9-38 shooting, I would have told you we would lose by 30. Go figure. Credit to Hicks, Samb, who had a nice little spurt in the first half, and, to all people, Tarke, who actually made a few plays. Let’s temper this though with the fact that UNCW is not the same team as last year, when Trazarian (sp) White was tearing up the CAA (he’s now getting paid quite handsomely to avg 10 ppg for TCU). Also, as alluded to earlier, our shooting was woeful. Anyway, take the W and on to C of C. Frankly, no matter what happens in Charleston, the road trip is already a success. Forgot to mention that Suliaman was a bad man on that put back dunk Edited January 3 by TSU88 3 Quote

GOTIGERS Congrats on your superbowl! Looks like our defense finally showed up and will need to win more rock fights to have a chance. League is horrible so there’s a chance especially with a fairly easy schedule. As stated when schedule came out, away uncw and Charleston first two games (while tough) is the best time to play them, with all their new pieces. Actually took a 3-1 day betting on CAA games (and yes I took the points) and happy to not watch if it means they win (maybe I am the jinx??) I find it crazy how well Skerry coached teams perform against siddle! Probably drives the flying sea bird fans mad! Quote
Tiger93 Posted January 3 Report Posted January 3 I am happy for this team that we could get started off on the right foot. I was working another game so I didn't get to see it, but tried to track the best I could. Our style has seemed to match up well with UNCW ever since Siddle got there (before that they were bad for a stretch). It was good to see us grind out a win. Seventeen offensive boards, and limiting UNCW to way under their scoring average of 82 even with an overtime are strong efforts and match up with how Skerry has won in the past in conference play. It was good to see 10 and 8 from May. We could use more scoring from him still, but that is a solid effort. I also love when Sulaiman crashes the glass like this. I really feel like when he is having games like this he brings an emotional intangible to this team that is hard to quantify (I have only been to one game, but I feel like his emotion was big part of the JMU win). We need that with the absence of Charles' leadership, which this team thrived on the past. All that being said, this still the same ugly offense that had us complaining when we didn't get wins. If we could be more efficient, we wouldn't have to grind out wins like this. The roster is a talented one, but when our two best players are 9-38 it makes things really tough. Even games where they have better shooting nights, the offense still doesn't really flow. I thought we could finish 4th or 5th with the usual style we bring to the table, and I still think that is true. However, it really would be nice to get more. We have shot over 40% from the field three times since November, and those were 41.3% vs. UC Irvine and 40.8% against Bryant. The one time we shot well against Robert Morris at 54.3%, we fell apart with a season-high 17 turnovers. I applaud the win and for better or worse I view every season as fresh opportunity, but hopefully against some other opposition we and figure the offense out a little. Towson, Elon and William & Mary were the road teams to get a win to start the conference campaign, so that is always a nice list to join. I feel like Elon, William & Mary (with a fresh coach) and Northeastern could be teams that are fresh new challengers around the top this year (compared to last year). That loss to William & Mary looked really bad for Hofstra, but it is only one game. Charleston will obviously be tough, but I do trust this team to make it a competitive game. We can get away with a subpar or so-so offensive effort against UNCW and many others, but I feel like we need a strong offensive effort against Charleston to have any shot to grab the road win. Quote
