mat1992 Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 https://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=550192 In a game that set offensive basketball back about 60 years, Towson found a way to beat Stony Brook 53-49 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-1 in the CAA. The Tigers were down once again in the first half by six (25-19) despite shooting 3-of-22 from the three-point line and 12-of-23 (52.2%) from the free throw line, beat the Seawolves, who made 12 of 12 from the line, but just 5-of-22 from three-point range (0-7 2nd half). Mekhi Lowery led the way with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Christian May, who is still struggling with his shot (2-8 FG) held CJ Luster (15ppg) to two points in 19 minutes. 2 Quote
mat1992 Posted January 18 Author Report Posted January 18 Tough to cover this team when they don't show up offensively in the first half. Last game, it was the defense that didn't show up. I don't get it. Trap game sure. Overlooking a bad team? Sure. To me, it's about on-court leadership. Not saying Charles wouldn't have allowed this to happen, but I do wonder who is the vocal leader when you beat a decent Hofstra team in that fashion and then no-show on offense in front of about 2,600 people and mostly screaming kids. It's disappointing as hell but they are 5-1 in the CAA somehow as the comeback kids. I just don't know how long they can keep this up as far as getting behind 6-18 points every half. Still think the starting lineup is a small part of that. Start Dylan and Lowery. Sulamian played just 11 minutes today (-12) I guess because they needed May and Lowery on the floor defensively, though Lowery should have played more than 22 minutes. I get that you can't play him late in games due to FT shooting though other than Tejada and maybe DWill, I don't know if there is anybody I want at the line. Lowery had 13 pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. I thought we should have pressed more (did some in the first half) to push the pace against a slow team. I also liked the fact that they put Tejada on the low block in the second half. Most of these guys that are guarding him are 6-4 to 6-6. He can shoot right over them in the lane but if he's not making perimeter shots (0-4 3pt), go inside to him. Same with with two-man game. Want to see more of that with him and D-Will. Problem is that when you start Hicks, you are limiting yourself offensively. Teams just take away his right-hand and give him the open three. I know you can say that with Lowery, but at least he can post up and score some in the paint. I didn't understand why May played 36 minutes because Luster played just 19. Aside from one layup, May did an excellent job defensively and on the boards. But the shooting woes continue (0-4 3pt). That three-pointer late in the game would have been nice, but that's not a shot I want if I'm PS. Get the ball to DWill and Tejada. What May needs to do more is his his size, like Tejada, against smaller guards and take them to the basket. Tried that once in the first half and got a strange charge call. Tarke came into this game making 20 of 35 in his last 3 games and making 6 of 12 from 3pt. That Tarke was not there today though he did get to the line 8 times but made just 4. Quote

All of our offensive flaws were on display today; 36% from the field; 13% (that’s not a typo) from 3; and 52% from the line. I refer to this as a Skerry Triple Crown Look, we all know the only reason we won is we were fortunate to play a demonstrably bad team. If we had played an average team, we would have lost by 20; a good team and we would have lost by 30. For the life of me, I don’t understand why Hicks & Samb ever see the floor. Neither should play absent an emergency, such as an injury or a guy fouling out. And poor May. 2-8 shooting. I guess he played good D, but he’s a complete liability on offense. I think Tejada scored a zero in the first half. I wouldn’t break the NIL bank in the offseason for this guy. If some team wants to give him 6 digits, well more power to them. As far as I’m concerned, the only guys even worth considering bringing back are Tejada (at a reasonable price); DWill; Lowery and Embeya. Speaking of Lowery, he was our best player today (electric dunk and some nice finishes around the basket) but because he’s such a miserable foul shooter, it’s risky to play him at the end of a close game. Tarke reverted to the old (and bad) Tarke today. Poor foul shooting and some terrible 3 point shots. I don’t know, a W is a W is a W, and we’re 5-1 in conference play, but today felt like a loss. Yet another home game where we had to come scratching & clawing back after an awful first half. It seems like every game we’re down 8+ points before my seat is warm. 1 Quote

mat1992 Posted January 18 Author Report Posted January 18 No doubt, that Lowery ally-oop was huge. PS said his assistants didn't want the play call because of a likely turnover but it (finally) worked. I think they tried that 5 or 6 times with Timberlake and it never worked in 4 years. Maybe once or twice with the ultimate length leaper and it finally worked. Quote
mat1992 Posted January 18 Author Report Posted January 18 A couple more things to add. Great crowd today at 2,600 and I wish we gave them more plays like the Lowery ally-oop dunk to get excited about. He had another dunk on a fastbreak, the only transition points in the game. We should have had at least 3 more baskets in transition had we made the right pass and if guys make the right decision. Case in point. In the first half, Lowery, for some reason, gives the ball to Samb about 35 feet away from the basket and he proceeds to try and dribble drive around a defender instead of giving it up. Still, Mekhi can't give to to Samb there. Push it yourself and find DWill in the corner. Speaking of DWill. I think he's the most important player on the team whether he plays the 1 or 2. But took just 7 shots (2-5 3pt) and should have easily gotten to the basket most times against their slower guards. When we needed a basket late, he was there again with the short jumper. I'd like to see that more. Yes, he's more of a 2 and needs to get people involved and take care of the ball (2 ast, 1 TO). Also, I know people will and should point out the six assists in the last game and five this game. I don't know if that's a lack of a true point guard and not enough unselfish players, or just terrible shooting. When you make four threes and 19 field goals overall, it is what it is. But sure, another reason I want Lowery to start over Sulaiman is that he is probably the best passer on the team (3 assists again today). Quote
