Redshirt junior guard Dylan Williamson scored 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead Towson to an 87-78 win over Northeastern in Boston on Saturday afternoon It was an ugly start and nearly ugly end as the Tigers got down 14-2 and then had a 22-point lead midway through the second half, before the Huskies cut the deficit to five in the last two minutes. But the Tigers held on thanks to Williamson, Tyler Coleman (15pts, 5-7 FG, 4-4 FT, 7rebs) and freshman Jaquan Womack (17pts, 7-11 FG, 2-4 FT). Towson's 16 turnovers and William Kermoury's shooting (9-of-16, 28pts), helped Northeastern stay in the game until the last minute.

Towson improves to 1-4 in the CAA with the win and they'll be back home to face Charleston next Thursday at 8pmET, which is Tyler Tejada and Dylan Williamson bobblehead day.

Tejada picked up two early fouls and sat most off the second half, but wound up playing most of the second half, scoring 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting with three fouls and three assists. Towson shot 60.7% from the field and 50% (6-of-12) from beyond the arc.

More later.

Here is Skerry after the game

"Hard to lose a game shooting that well. We struggled with turnovers in the first five and last five minutes, which were choppy. For 30 minutes, we were sharp. Guarded the 3 and rebounded. Saw some growth this week with Tyler Colemand Womack."

"We had some foul trouble with Tyler, Dylan set the tone. Good floor game. Fives (centers) have to play smarter. Follow their training, Hard team to stop. Happy to get off the schnide

On if the team needed this for confidence

"No we were pressing. Execution helps you win. I like our team. I understand kids read stuff out there. I don't read the naysayers and quasi morons. Game by game. Ton of basketball left."

I know Dylan played all 40 minutes and even if Doumbia (sick) had played, I want him with the ball in those last five minutes. Problem is, when you have a 22-point lead and sit on it with 10 minutes left or a 15-point lead with 7 minutes remaining, maybe don't have Dylan or Tejada try and spread the floor. Run your offense until the last media TO. We do that all the time with big leads and it's tougher when you don't have any guards out there other than No. 4.

Ndefo with 9 rebounds in 15 minutes was a positive. Wish he could shoot but if he stays in his lane and stops trying to dribble, and again, we have just one guard out there most of the time, he can be an ok bench player.

Coleman and Womack are not going to combine for 32 points a game but we need them to score and rebound. But until Tyler finds his game again, we're not beating the likes of Charleston or UNCW. He needs to be CAAPOY TT or we're in trouble. Dylan can only do so much and sure, if he played like this, we might have beaten Hofstra. But Hofstra is not NE. They actually have good players.

A desperately needed W vs a JV opponent playing w/out 4 starters, but that’s not our fault.

Kudos to DWill for bouncing back from his horrid game vs Hofstra. Womack continues to impress. And Coleman deserves credit. I wish he had played like this in his first 4 or 5 years here. Ndefo’s foul shot is starting to look better & he hit the boards today.

OTOH, TT’s shooting continues to be erratic; Schmidt is virtually unplayable & Sek and Embeya are who we feared they are.

We nearly yakked a 22 point lead against a team who had 1 scoring option, who we steadfastly refused to guard. So many mind numbing turnovers and bone headed fouls.

Did we turn a corner today, or was this just fools gold against a vastly inferior opponent? I suspect the latter but will fervently hope it’s the former

We nearly blew a 22 point lead against a team with 1 player who could score. Our offense was clicking on all cylinders until we went into a “prevent offense.” So, who’s the quasi moron?🤔

We were horrible at times defending NE as they shredded our hedge and put players in the corner (usually Kermoury) who had wide open shots. I have no idea how a guy can be that open. But the rest of their team was pretty bad. That won't be the case if we let Duggan sit open in the corner when our bigs hedge next week against Charleston. Somebody has to rotate.

Good to finally get a win, even if it was against a very short-handed Northeastern squad. The 87 points was our second-highest point total against a D1 team. Similar to Cornell we played a defense that was fairly non-existent. As I mentioned in the preview thread, that was the 286th defensive efficiency team in the nation and it looked liked it.

Still with the offensive struggled we have had, and after a 14-2 Northeastern run and two fouls by Tejada nothing was a given. It was nice to see us answer the early struggles with a 11-0 run. We took the lead at 20-19 at 7:21 mark in the first half and never trailed or were tied again. The end of the first half was important as it was 32-30 after Kermoury (who hit 5 threes and had 28 points) hit a three. Threes by Schmidt and Williamson helped us close the half with a 10-2 run, and it really wasn't that close until we started trying to piss it away at the end.

The 60.7 field goal percentage was out best since February 16, 2023, and was our fifth-best field goal percentage game as a team since 2013-14 (I don't have access to game-by-game before 2014-15). That was helped in large part by a D-1 season-high 48 points in the paint and 18-26 layups (1-1 on dunks) in the game. We had a 1.338 points per possession on 65 possessions. We are slightly up in possessions since the start of conference play. It was also nice to see us have an efficient offensive performance after scoring .967 points per possession in our first four conference games.

We had six different players score seven or more points, and Williamson, Tejada and Womack had 15, 12 and 11 shot attempts for decent distribution. This is completely anecdotal, but it feels like when we have other guys scoring it become a lot easier for Williamson to pick and choose his spots. He shot 10-15 from the field for the game. It matches the second-most field goals he has made in the game and the 66.7% field goal percentage tied for his second-best in a game where shot 10 or more shots.

Womack had a career-high 17 points and was an efficient 7-11 from the field. It was the fourth time in five games that he has scored in double-figures, and probably the first time in that stretch that is was incorporated fairly cleanly into the offense. He had a game-high +13 too.

Don't look now but Tyler Coleman has averaged 15.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg the last two games. He had 15 points, seven rebound and two steals, and was 4-4 from the free throw line. The last two games Coleman has scored 31 of his 68 points against D1 opponents this year.

I know Tejada fouled out for the first time this year, but he did a good job of not picking up his third foul and making some plays to help us grab the lead in the first half. Ndefo also had a D1 career-high nine rebounds. Good to see the freshmen go 9-13 from the field with 24 points.

The defense still concerting with letdowns early in the game and late in the game. A team that was completely decimated still was 18-33 on 2ptFG and was 14-23 on layups.

Still only one win, and if we don't come out with a great effort on Thursday we are probably right back to square one. However, you have to get a win to get on track. This was the type of effort we need offensively, but a lot easier to do against an injury-decimated Northeastern team. Let's see how we build off this.

We played clockball with a big lead and made it interesting?  That's not a surprise.  That's another big strike against this regime.

Positive, finally won a game. Negative But that a team was missing their top 4 scorers/top 2 rebounders  and then lost another starter for the second half, who was their third best rebounder, leaving a guy averaging 2.2 rebounds as their leading man on the glass (for perspective that’s what Williamson averages).

Positive we moved the ball well from about the 12 minute mark in the first to the 6 in the second and built a nice lead. Negative we came very close to blowing a 22 point lead to a team missing half their roster.

Positive maybe Williamson found it again? Negative Tejada looks lost.

Big positives. Coleman and Womack.  Both played very well. Womack is here.  Coleman (can’t believe I’m saying it) is a solid glue guy. Though he shouldn’t be starting or playing this many minutes.  If he could do this now, would have been valuable on last years team…

Negative. Now we get Charleston

fools gold. This is one game.  Are they as bad as the first four games? Probably not. Are they as good as they played in spurts today? Definitely not
