    Christian May becomes second commit

Joe Wooten said this about May and I know that's his player, but still impressive coming from the son of a legend. Wootten called the 6-foot-6 May, whom he projects as a shooting guard at the college level, an “elite” defender and a great rebounder who can also shoot “really well.” Wootten added that May has a “big, strong, college-ready body” that allows him to drive the lane. And, Wootten said, May is a “team guy “He doesn’t care if he scores 15 points -- which he is very capable of -- or he scores five because he’s giving his all defensively, he’s just all about the team,” Wootten said. “I think a college coach would be excited to have him because he’s skilled, he can score at different levels, loves to play defense and at the same time is all about the team. I think he’s just a great combination. “Christian’s gonna be a really great college guard,” he added. “He’s gonna continue to grow and get better, and he’s very coachable, which I think, with his talent, makes him a unique play

    Christian May becomes second commit

I think sometimes you see a guy you like and if you are going with the four-guard lineup from now and want more Cam Holden-types, this guy might be the right fit. It doesn't get much better than Joe Wooten as a HS coach.

    Here is the main problem

The defense can get (and should) healthier with Lumor, Choelwa, and Okombi expected back in two weeks. The offensive line should be more settled at right guard and center, assuaming Cheripko and Desire/Germain are back. But it all comes back to this: https://goblackbears.com/sports/football/roster/chris-ferguson/4747 Even in his solid 2018 season at Maine, Chris Ferguson played just 7 games and had 7 picks. In 2017, as a freshman, he had 11 picks with 16 TDs in 10 games. In 2019, the last year where he was a starter, he had 8 picks in 6 games. So in 23 games, he had 26 picks. Not even counting the fumbles because I'm not sure they release those stats on the QBs at this level. This year, in four games, he has 5 TDs and three picks. But with the lost fumble yesterday, that's four turnovers in four games. Had 34 TDs and 26 INTs at Maine. So now he has 30 turnovers (that I know of) in 27 games in his career as a starter not counting his four TDs with no picks at Liberty as a backup with 39 TDs and 30 turnovers. Not a good ratio and it's probably more if you count his fumbles at Maine. I can talk about OL, DL, DBs, and poor tackling all day. Stats don't lie. And the young man is not who I'm blaming. It's on RA.

    Here is the main problem

Yes the line is struggling in the running game. Not a lot of holes for Howard and others to run through especially in the last two games, which is understandable considering the competition. They did not do a great job against UNH but again, they didn’t throw four picks. Lol about the other stuff.

    Off-season news and clips

Two years ago we had a winning record in the league. I'm not going to apologize for bringing up the positives. The fans can believe what they want to believe. This is a much better team. Does that mean title contender? I'm not going to pick them first, but not going to pick them last either. Yes, last year stunk in many ways. No Zane, no Solly, no Jakigh, No Victor, No Mims, No Cam Allen. All struggled big-time last season. A lot of these guys missed a ton of time due to all sorts of things (a lot I can't mention legally). So thinking that Cam Allen would not shoot 28% from the floor and 29.6% from the three-point line after shooting 39.6% from 3-point at Bakersfield. But even if he shot his average of around 35% and 34% 3pt. That was not enough. Terry Nolan? An upgrade whether he plays point or wing. Zane and Gibby played it last season He'll play mostly point. Gibby can now recover from the back surgery and play the 2, I assume off the bench. He's an upgrade due to his size (6-4, 190), his ability to defend (much better than Zane) and he is a natural born leader. Antonio Rizzuto (6-3, 210) isn't a great shooter, but he's competent at 36% career. Was an elite defender in the America East. Will that translate to the CAA? I think it will since there's not a huge difference anymore between the conferences. CAA is more athletic though. Curtis Holland? I think if he has healthy feet, he can help big-time as a shooter, but not sure we can count on that. Cam Holden? He's the key. He's the guy that can do things at the 4 we haven't seen before. Not just stretch the D, but also take it to the rack. Great rebounder at 6-5ish, 205. All these kids that left, I can throw them under the bus, but we all did for all the years that they played. It's not necessary. Some great kids there. But not a ton of talent and basketball skill. Another thing we've mentioned for years. Some guys are built like a tank and they played like that. At least these guys (I believe) can play. I don't think we have a superstar and that's why I'm reluctant to say we're title contenders. But I can say we will be pretty good. I do want to see them in the fall practice, because when I saw them in the summer about half the team was out due to injuries.

    Here is the main problem

The skill players are fine. I like the WRs. They would excel with a more accurate passer. I wouldn't mind one more explosive receiver/running back. I think they missed there. They added a ton to the defense. I think changing OL coaches two times in the last three years doesn't help. Brian Scott was the OL coach for a second before heading to UNH to become OC. It's all about the QB. A good one like Flacco can take you to the playoffs. A great one can make an average team good or a good team great. I guess we'll never know about this team. I know the OL has not played great, but without blitzing, I've seen our QB has plenty of time to throw.
  11. I thought they did better than expected. Some of the points came as a results of the punt block for a TD and the short field they had after the fumble in the first half. No doubt, the D was getting worn out. While it may not mean we're ready to pounce on the CAA, there were some positives and we'll find out in two weeks whether they are ready to start winning games. If not, it's going to be a very long season. Seriously, we all knew that playing North Dakota State and San Diego State in back-to-back games was going to be rough. But it's still about QB1. Can't turn it over.
  12. Also, can't get too specific on these injuries. Hopefully, the O-line situation will be better at right guard in two weeks. I assume Alex Desire will get the start. Brendan Cassells was injured tonight. It didn't look good. Jean Germain did not play due to injury. Nor did Darian Bryant. Hopefully, they will have Germain and Desire in two weeks. Cheripko was also injured but went back in the game. That's why Desire had a bad snap in our own territory. He's not used to playing center. But they will need a backup center in two weeks. As for RB, I believe we had just three in Howard, Matthews and Hunter. D'Ago was playing a lot because Curtis Murray, Kobe Young and Sabias Folley were all injured. I would think Folley will be back in two weeks. Not sure about the other two. We certainly could use him to take some pressure off of Howard.
  13. Opening comment "Great football team. Tough football team. A little bit overmatched. I knew we were going to have to do a few things different." On third quarter "Turnover and blocked punt. Can't give good teams extra possessions. When you have a kick blocked, the chances of winning that games goes down dramatically." On what to take away "It's about us. Even in against great competition, we can be very successful. After the roughness of last week, to fly out to the West Coast and be down just a score at the half. OUr kids are going to fight. There's confidence to be gained against a ranked team. A bowl team." On FBS matchups being helpful "A little bit. It's a challenge. YOu never know how tough, how hard when you are forced to play against a team that is supposedly bigger and faster team. Keep it about us and take care of the little things." We try hard to schedule at least one game relatively close to where guys come from (Jeff Miller, SJ Brown). On offensive line "At one point, we were down to third-string center. Cole came back to help us out. We lost Brendan (Cassells) and Alex (Desire). On Ferguson "Improved, but up and down. Turned the ball over twice. Can't do that. Stayed in the pocket. Got himself into a rhythm. THat's a lot to build on. It's a confidence-builder that we can play" On bye week "Yeah, it's a good time. Has there every been a bigger grind in the month of September. Maybe LSU and Kent State (in 2012)."

They were down 38-3. Two late scores. Probably against backups. Certainly a better performance than UNH at Pitt (77-7).

They are charging for something that really should be free or the other schools should charge a small fee per game. That's what they used to do. Production value is on the schools.
