  1. It's too early a sample size for positive thinking on this board, but I have to say that CT is becoming one of my favorite players over the last 10 years. His motor and work ethic cannot be matched. He's not even starting for whatever reason, but still played 35 minutes today and produced 17 points. He's averaging 9.9 points and 5.3 rebounds on 59.6% shooting and 63% from the line (17 of 27). He's worked on that part of the game and it shows, even if the form is not perfect. It's going in and that's huge because he doesn't mind the contact down low. Solomon has also improved his game, especially on the offensive end. He just has to continue getting better on the defensive end. The fact that we were going to those guys most of the game, should give them confidence. I know Hofstra is a bigger team than UNCW, but not by much. Isaac Kante (6-7, 240) is the only big that plays a lot and we have three guys that can lean on him and four if you count Biekeu. I thought the defense in the second half was exceptional and most of UNCW's points came at the line where they went 21 of 23. Yes, they hit some tough threes at the end but only made 7 of 25 (28%) and shot 36% from the field. Did they not play in a month and does it show after two games? Excuses? I'm not saying Charles Thompson is going to become the next Devontae Cacok, but he has a chance to be the second-best big man we've had since JB. He's long and fairly athletic. He doesn't mind mixing it up and has a pretty good array of post moves. He blocked two shots today, but I thought he blocked or altered at least five in the second half. I think the rebounds will come and he could easily be a double-double machine next season. Dottin might be our best perimeter defender, but I think Allen and Mims are nearly as good. If they can eliminate the reaching fouls, they can really help. I thought there were several possessions in the second half where we just D'ed up and you could see the potential there. It's not consistent, but who is at this point?
  2. https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/basketball/bs-sp-bkc-uncw-towson-men-20210119-dcivpkncgng2rgkk46s5zctqza-story.html Zane Martin scored 24 points, grabbed six boards and dished out five assists to lead the Tigers to a 78-74 win over UNCW and a sweep in their two-game, two-day series. Towson trailed at the half by four, but they jumped out to a 21-4 run. They were up by as many as 15 with 4:40 left before Jason Gibson was apparently fouled. He was knocked down on the floor, Solomon Uyaelunmo was protecting him, thinking that he was kicked by Mike Okauru. Gibson and Uyaelunmo both picked up technical fouls and Okauro wound up living at the line for the next 30 seconds. He scored 25 points to lead the Seahawks, while Jaylen Sims was held to just four points. He didn't play down the stretch. Bottom line is that the Tigers shot 61% in the second half (17-of-28) and scored 46 points. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=319831

Well Zane was a good recruit and Gibby could be. I’m curious about the freshmen guards next season Gill and Hicks. Both short but can defend. Hicks is highly regarded. We need a wing who can consistently score which is obvious

MBB holds on to defeat UNCW 78-74

Here are some quotes from the Sun for those who can't get it. “Demetrius’ dunk, I felt like, propelled us over the top right there,” said sophomore power forward Charles Thompson, who contributed 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. “I’ve never seen the whole bench [react that way]. Even Wan [redshirt senior small forward Juwan Gray] who is down with his injury [a torn left Achilles tendon], even Wan was wheeling around on the sideline. It was just great. It brought everybody together. Everybody on the sideline was energized and focused and locked in. It really boosted our momentum.” PS “I thought we were a little bit lifeless, and we haven’t been together much,” he said, alluding to two coronavirus-induced halts in December. “So I’m still trying to figure out how to get this team to have that type of killer instinct all the time. We’re still trying to put roles together and energy and chemistry with pauses and injuries and everything else. Hopefully, this gives us a little life, and we can build off of it.” On Gibson and Solomon techs. “I didn’t see what happened,” Skerry said. “If we kicked a guy, we can’t do that. Whether or not a foul should have been called earlier, we can’t do that.” “That’s Towson brand basketball – defense, rebounding and toughness,” he said. “If we have to get three stops in a row to win a game, that’s what we’re going to be able to do every time we go out there. The CAA’s going to be a dogfight. I feel like that will help us over time.” “I’ll say it was easier because we knew what to expect,” Zane Martin said. “We knew that they were going to give us their best shot because we beat them yesterday. We just wanted to come out and perform and execute like Coach wanted.” Siddle seemed to indicate that Sims’ benching was not accidental. “I have a standard, an expectation of the way we should play, and I felt like the unit that we had out there did a great job,” he said. “They put us in a position to tie the game up and take us into overtime. I’m just coaching my basketball team.”

That Mims dunk was nice. I was saying in that chat that he laid it up a little soft in the first half on a finger roll attempt. They must have told him that because he didn't lay it up soft in the second. https://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/basketball/bs-sp-bkc-uncw-towson-men-20210119-dcivpkncgng2rgkk46s5zctqza-story.html

I think if both average around 11-12ppg, we'll be fine. Neither is a 15-16ppg guy right now. Not until one of them can develop a mid-range jumper, though Solly can shoot it a little. Next season, with a real offseason, they should be a bit better overall. Of course, assuming Zane leaves, we'll need Holland and probably another transfer to be more of a volume scorer.

There's not a consistent second option, but in the last two days, we found two post players who can at least give you 10-12ppg if you pound the ball inside and that's Solly and CT. Timberlake is struggling offensively, but let's also not forget that Gibson is getting his legs back. He hit two huge threes today in 28 minutes and had 10 points. Gibson, Solly, CT, Nick, Vic and Mims are capable of putting up points. Some may put up double-digits one night and the others may give you five. I'd love to have a healthy Holland as my second option, but that's not probably not going to happen this seas

UNCW does have injuries as do we. But it helps to have a nine-man rotation when you have the back-to-backs. Dottin played just three minutes today, but you have Gibson, Allen, Zane, Mims and Timberlake getting most of the action at the guard/wing spots. Solly, Victor, Thompson and Bieku up front. So 10 guys are playing with Jakigh and Biekeu playing a combined eight minutes

  15. https://towsontigers.com/news/2021/1/18/44-points-in-the-paint-leads-towson-mens-basketball-to-victory-over-uncw.aspx Zane Martin, after missing Saturday's game against James Madison due to "personal reasons", returned on Monday to lead the Tigers to a 72-69 win over UNCW. Martin scored 21 points to lead the Tigers on 8-of-19 shooting, while redshirt sophomore forward Solomon Uyaelunmo added 14 points and nine rebounds on 7-of-8 shooting. Towson won this game in the paint with 44 points and also hit 17 of 22 free throws, including several late ones from sophomore Charles Thompson, who is 10 of 19 from the line this season. Thompson produced 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench. The Tigers shot just 1-of-14 from three-point range and turned the ball over 14 times. UNCW shot just 5-of-19 from the three-point line and 35% overall. The Tigers outrebounded the Seahawks 40-29. http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=319830

Skerry's opening comments "Really proud of our guys. We're not there yet. They've worked hard. We have to have patience with these guys. That's the first time we've been on the court other than Juwan since Nov. 21 (means Gibson and everybody but Holland). UNCW is a good club. It's tough to beat a team shooting 1 for 14 from 3. We have good shooters. I did like the way we guarded. Second half did a better job of taking care of the ball. " On Sims We have to do a better job tomorrow keeping them off the foul line. (Comments about outstanding officiating crew). On back-to-back "I hope he doesn't make any adjustments and will allow us to win. But seriously, hard to go through this. We'll have a 9am film and walk-through. I think our depth will help us tomorrow. They like to press and switch a lot. Hopefully that hurts their legs." On points in the paint (from Chuck) "We didn't take care of the ball well early. The key for us until we start making shots is to take care of the ball. We can rebound and drive. The next piece is that they make the game choppy. We have to drive the switch or post the swtich. When they come, we need to find Jason or Nick for those open shots. We have to get them rhythm and time."
