No. 8 Tigers demolish No. 9 Black Bears, 45-23

  3. https://towsontigers.com/news/2019/9/14/thaenrats-four-tds-sends-8-towson-football-to-huge-45-23-victory-at-7-9-maine.aspx This game started out like it was going down to the wire. Towson had a 17-13 lead at the half and had the ball in the second half. After a three-and-out, Maine had a chance to go down and tie it up but they settled for a field goal. The Tigers went on to score 28 straight points to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Tom Flacco completed 20 of 34 for 232 yards with one TD and ran for 68 yards. But the key number was in the turnover column, where had none and last season had two picks. His counterpart, Chris Ferguson, started off strong, but wound up with four interceptions even though he threw for 401 yards. Some of those yards came when the game was out of reach, but Towson's defense was opportunistic and well, balanced. They had four different players pick off balls including Robert Heyward, Keon Paye, Steven Brown and Coby Tippett (his third). On the downside, star running back Shane Simpson was injured on a kickoff return and was carted off. No news was released on his status. The Tigers were also playing without WR Jabari Allen (lower body), S Jamal Gay (undisclosed) and C Brandon Cassels. Though Cole Cheripko played center and may not move out. RG Alex Desire also played well. Towson ran for 172 yards and spread it around three backs. Yeedee Thaenrat was mainly sued in short yardage and had four touchdown runs. Adrian Platt had the most carries (12), while Kobe Young was mainly used as a third-down back.
  4. Yes, Shane Simpson probably will miss the next few games. Maybe more. Not sure of the severity until Monday, but we could have come out of last night's game with no injuries and there still would be no buzz. I could sort of understand the pessimism. We're Towson fans, always waiting for the shoe to drop. But that was a hell of a win last night and unlike last season, when we started to wilt against teams like Maine, JMU and even Duquense in the heavy rain, we manned up. We controlled BOTH lines of scrimmage. I'm not sure I could say that since we had guys like Shaw, Desir, Farmer, Harris, Pike, D. Cheripko, CJ, etc. Getting more transfers up front has helped tremendously. And we just added another big body, more likely for future depth on one of the lines. https://towsontigers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11515 Now I can also say I was one of the doubters. I'm not saying that we hadn't improved from last season's team-I just didn't know how much. It was impossible to tell in the spring because of the weather and some of these guys hadn't arrived yet. But even Maine wondered, who the hell were these new guys? Impact newcomers? WR Darian Street (Pitt), WR Daniel Thompson (true freshman), S Stephen Brown (juco), S Stanley Davis (juco), RT DeMarcus Gilmore (juco), FB Luke Hamilton (r-freshman), TE Jason Epps (D3 transfer), NG Vinny Shaffer (D2 transfer), DE Quashon Alexander (Nebraska), DE Ron Johnson (Michigan), DE Jesus Gibbs (South Carolina), Marcus Bowman (Juco). That's not even mentioning Darian Bryant, the Temple transfer, who would have started at right tackle, but injured his knee in camp. Or Brown Tuiasosopo, who is a backup center, but can play guard. Of course, every year, you're going to have newcomers, jucos, FBS transfers, true freshman and r-freshman. I just think it's rare that a team that made the playoffs reassemble a roster like that. A bit of desperation? You can say so but you do what it takes to make the next step and you just don't know if you'll ever another QB like Flacco again, just like T-West was basically a once-in-a generation type of player.

    First lax transfer reported

Hearing about a certain tall, troubled, and talented attackman might be coming back for his last season and is practicing with the team again.
  6. It’s ok to talk about Florida. It really is but of course, the Villanova game is more important because it’s the next game and we’re at home. Beating Florida is likely a pipe dream assuming your best running back, return man and one of your best receivers is going to be out. I think only one poster brought up Florida. Most of us are focused on a team that is now ranked 18th. The reason I brought up this thread was to create a little excitement and discussion. Nothing wrong with pounding your chest and being proud of your school being ranked fifth. As someone who was there when the program nearly folded, I sometimes have to pinch myself at where we are and we are potentially headed.

    Games on live TV?

Florida game should be on the SEC Network, I would assume.

Welcome to the family. Love those Virginia receivers and I know it helps to have a great one on the staff in Justin Harper.
  11. Just trying to emphasize the positive when we win because I know what happens when we lose. It becomes a bitch-fest. I know that’s what this board is for. I’m starting to believe in this team and that the changes we made on the coaching staff are beginning to show. I’m also not naive enough to think that a serious injury to Shane coupled with DeBerry being out wouldn’t be a huge blow to the team.

    Citadel beat Georgia Tech

Then I missed what your original point was. That Georgia Tech blows so it’s no big deal that The Citadel beat them and I’ll say it again. They beat South Florida. Another mediocre at best team but they are not awful. It is irrelevant anyway as we beat the crap out of Maine or were they overrated?
  13. He probably will apply for one more year.

    Citadel beat Georgia Tech

They have 85 scholarships and millions more in their budget. They’ve been to 20 bowl games in 22 years. To compare them to a program like Kansas is a joke. I never said beating The Citadel by 7 on the road meant we’ve arrived. I just thought that people on this board who thought our defense was still bad because we gave up 300+ yards on the ground underestimated how tough that offense is to stop. There is a difference between a terrible program and one that is average. Maybe you feel that .500 is terrible. I don’t. Kansas and UConn would love to be .500 and go to multiple bowl games.

    Citadel beat Georgia Tech

More like mediocre. Though they have been to a bowl game in 20 of the last 22 years. https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/georgia-tech/index.html

    Citadel beat Georgia Tech

Again, GT is not in the cellar of FBS. They are not good but they are not UConn, Rutgers or Vanderbilt. They got drilled by Clemson (so what) and beat USF by four. DO NOT SCHEDULE A TRIPLE OPTION TEAM. I don't care if you're Michigan playing Army or Towson playing The Citadel. Though I guess since Georgia Tech used to be an option team, they figured they could handle another one when Paul Johnson was the head coach. It's going to take Geoff Collins a few years to get his personnel.

    Students leaving early solution?

I think you need to bribe them to stay. Have some special giveaway for students-only. Free I-Pad or two with some kind of raffle but you have to be there at the end of the third quarter when the drawing is made. If you're not there, you don't receive it. Then re-draw. Also, have a local sponsor to give away free pizzas or free coupons for pizzas in the second half like they used to do in basketball just to the students. A section or two. Fans of the game. Need to do gimmicks to keep them interested nowadays.

It's alright. We're all homers and while I'd like to report stuff all the time, I have to keep a lot of the info quiet. Opponents do read this board and if the team want to keep somebody's injury status private, I'll abide by their wishes.

Guys, we have to be careful with injuries. Nothing official yet on Shane so please keep that private until something official comes out.

    Citadel beat Georgia Tech

They are an FBS team last I checked and just beat South Florida. You should never schedule a triple option team. Nearly impossible to prepare for.
