    2020 Football Offers/Commits

Funny, I didn’t catch that. Maybe he thinks he’s leaving for the NFL early or that he’ll be so good some P5 school will pick him up.

    MBB roster is out

I know nothing about him other than he's left-handed, pretty fast and supposedly a good defender. Maybe he's better than the average walk-on. https://www.prephoops.com/2018/03/recruiting-report-nigel-haughton-2019/

    Tigers in the NFL/CFL/USFL/XFL thread

Dangerfield and Tye Smith both made rosters. Hopefully next season, we'll have one or more of Flacco, Simpson, Leatherbury and O'Neill on a roster or practice squad. I think even Yeedee should get consideration as a special teams whiz. I guess Clark considering his size and speed would even be considered if he can stay on the field.

    Depth at linebacker

My biggest concern, if DeBerry is out for an extended period of time, is depth at linebacker. We really couldn't afford an injury, especially at inside linebacker, because we had very little experience behind DeBerry and Heyward. Personally, maybe it's too late, but I'd go back to a 4/3 scheme. We now have tremendous depth up front with the addition of Ron Johnson who can play inside or outside at 6-3, 280. Gibbs can play outside as well but he's over 290. Bowman, Carter, Tibo, Vinny Schafer, Gyeni and Alexander are all in the mix. We can go three deep at nose guard with Danagogo and not lose too much. But at linebacker, I'm a bit worried. Christian Dixon and Chiz U. are solid but inexperienced. We could move Paye to inside linebacker but who plays outside? Lambert and Tyne, who missed the last game? Nygil Johnson would be the only depth and he never really has seen any serious time. If you go back to a 4-3, you can play Paye, Heyward and Chiz/Dixon. Maybe move Tyne back to DE. Another option is to play Troy Vincent at linebacker. He played there in camp but at 5-10, 205, he's undersized. Maybe in passing situations. Mantriel Reaves is another option and he looked pretty good against The Citadel, but he's a former safety and Vincent is more of a nickel. Daniels is going to need to be creative if DeBerry is out. Let's hope his injury is not serious.

    Depth at linebacker

It is still a concern because of our lack of experience though I know they really like Dixon and Chiz. I believe they would rotate both. But if we lose one of them, then we’re looking at a true freshman as a backup. So let’s hope Ricky’s injury is minor.

    Ron Johnson coming to Towson

Yeah, didn't expect it to be easy. We definitely should have scored two more TDs, but the holding and fumble cost us. If not, we probably win easy because they couldn't really handle our speed. Flacco even admitted he wasn't that sharp. Thankfully, he was short on that throw to Darian Street on that last drive because if he scores, maybe the Bulldogs have a shot if there's 2 minutes left, though they would still have to throw.

    Ron Johnson coming to Towson

I think we now have a plethora of potentially-really good linemen for the first time ever or at least since 2011-13. However, we are now playing a 3-4 and just lost one of our best linebackers for who knows how long (probably due to playing CutBlock U.). I'd consider going back to a 4-3. Play Gibbs and Vinny/Gyeni/Danagogo inside at defensive tackle. Play Johnson and Carter at defensive end. Bring Bowman, Tyne and Lambert off the bench at end, Tibo replacing Gibbs. Johnson can move inside on passing situations. Paye, Chiz and Heyward at linebacker. We just don't have much depth right now at linebacker. Christian Dixon and Chiz are limited in experience. I don't mind the 3-4 but I don't know if we were ready for that in terms of having the depth at LB. The worst-case scenario may have happened in the first game. If he's only out a few games, we'll be ok. If it's long-term, I just hope we can get by with our defensive linemen rotating around.

    Ron Johnson coming to Towson

  12. I believe he's getting an MRI. Some swelling. Not fair to guess the severity of the injury but suffice to say he probably won't be playing this week.
  13. I didn't see him in there. I assume he played special teams. He was on the participation chart. I think he'll be the nickel corner when they need one though I still think he's better at safety.
  14. I believe we were a 3.5-point favorite in this one so this wasn't supposed to be a blowout. I have faith that this defense will be better. But they have to show it. We have a ton of transfers and while that addition of talent is what was needed, you are also hoping that they become a cohesive unit. NG Vinny Shaffer (D2), DT/E Marcus Bowman (ASA juco), DE Ron Johnson (Michigan), DT Jesus Gibbs (South Carolina), LB Mantriel Reaves (Juco), S Stanley Davis (juco), S Steven Brown (juco), CB Brandon Shuman (Purdue), CB Terrell Gillette (juco), S/CB Robert Topps III (Kansas), OLB John Lambert (Dean College), ILB Ricky DeBerry (Oklahoma), Troy Vincent (N, Iowa/NC State). Yeah, some of those guys were transfers from last season (Shuman, Gillette, Reaves, Lambert, DeBerry, Troy Vincent.). You wish we'd have more non-transfers but part of recruiting is getting FBS/Juco transfers. In 2012-13, we were loaded defensively, even if the production wasn't great. Ty Smith, Frank Beltre, Fred Overstreet, Jordan Dangerfield, Jordan Love, Monte Gaddis, Telvion Clark, Arnold Farmer, Romale Tucker, Jon Desir, Drew Cheripko. Many of those guys were transfers. Some went on to the NFL and CFL. You need talent on defense to get to the next level.
  15. I like to dissect games but this is just a W you need to take and move on. We played a team that wanted this win badly. They did some strange things in terms of subbing (like laying down) and running the clock at the end of the half before the ball was set? Strange goings. As Rob said at the end of the half, we're playing great on offense until we shoot ourselves in the foot. You kind of expect a false start and a holding (when Yeedee tried to run outside like Shane instead of taking it North/South). The drops are unusual for Leatherbury and Allen, but guys, say what you want. I'm not going to say this team is special because I still don't know. But this receiving corps has a chance to be special. Last season, Allen and Leatherbury were a great combo. Brent Richardson and Sam Gallahan were solid as the 3rd and 4th receivers. But they aren't as talented as Darian Street and Daniel Thompson. Those guys could be our top 2 receivers next season if Jabari Allen wasn't returning. Street was open several times down the middle that I think Flacco sometimes doesn't look his way because he is looking for Leatherbury, Allen, Simpson and Clark. Was the defense good today? No. They gave up 329 yards on the ground and 21 points to a team that doesn't pass, including one late that nearly won the game for the Bulldogs. Guess what? In Alabama's 50-17 win over The Citadel last season, where the game was tied at 10-10 at the half, the Tide allowed 275 yards rushing to the Bulldogs. It's difficult to judge the ground defense and let's face it. Ron Johnson didn't play and Jesus Gibbs (3 tackles) played sparingly. Do you think they'll help? Brand new nose guard Vinny Shaffer looked good today. I'd personally like him as a starter and Bryce Carter (13 tackles) was solid. Add another juco transfer in Marcus Bowman (3 tackles) and Nebraska transfer Quashon Alexander (1 tackle), I don't know where Daniels is going to find time for all these guys. We do need Malik Tyne back at OLB. If DeBerry is out, Chiz Umumakwe or Christian Dixon probably takes his spot. Maybe they rotate. Chiz is really fast and Dixon is a bit bigger and steadier. Can't judge the secondary in that game but I do like Stephen Brown (8 tackles) at safety though Coby Tippett (5 tackles, 1 INT) made the game-saving pick. He also was burned twice on two rare passes. I know we'll be glad to not face an option team next week but teams will and should try and test us on the ground. It will be nice to face teams that are not taking your knees out. Hopefully we never see another option team in my lifetime unless it's in the playoffs.

    Ron Johnson coming to Towson

Yes, he's eligible immediately. Stack the box? Right. Against a triple option team? We didn't beat them by 40 on the road? I don't know what you expected. This is the team that had Alabama at 10-10 at the half. Not an easy team to play in the humidity and rain in Charleston. I just wanted the win. I knew it wasn't going to be easy with a new defensive coordinator and new scheme against that offense. Our offense should have put about 40 points on the board to make it easier. Epps fumbles at the 2. Leatherbury drops the ball at the 1 on 3rd and goal. Flacco missed a few open guys. We had some drops. Simpson was brilliant with three TDs. Take the W but to say we're going to be nice but not good enough for the alums to be satisfied after one win? Let's wait until the Maine game. That will be the true litmus test assuming we are 2-0 by then. The loss of DeBerry though could be massive if he's gone for a long period of time.

    Ron Johnson coming to Towson

Yes, a brand new defense with a new DC so it's going to take some time to get cohesive.

    Ron Johnson coming to Towson

I really don't think you can judge our D-line on playing against a triple option team that cut blocks you to death. Carter was excellent, Gibbs played sparingly but had 3 tackles. I like Vinny Shaffer the rest were ok, Concerned about the linebackers now if DeBerry is going to be out awhile. Next man up I guess. But there's no CAA team with two four-star defensive linemen. Add Johnson with Gibbs, will allow you to move Carter around and Bowman. They need Vinny to start at NG and rotate the rest of the guys.

    The Citadel Preview

No big surprises in the starting lineup. Malik Tyne must be still nicked up so John Lambert gets the start at OLB. Coby Tippett has the most experience at safety. Not sure about him against the pass but that's irrelevant today.
