The more I watch, the more I pick apart guys. Garnett had some struggles in his first start at LT. Flacco was good but not great. Had a few throws to Leatherbury and Jabari Allen he'd like to have back on deep passes. A couple of tough reads, but he made up for it with some great throws under pressure. They just blitzed the crap out of him all night.

My God, I didn't realize how bad the camerawork and coverage was on this game. Geez. Towson is running up tempo, no huddle offense. You can't keep showing replays during the drives.

I know Flacco had a few mistakes that Rob referred after the game. One of those seemed to come on that 2nd drive when we settled for a FG on 3rd and 4 and he sort of panicked. Took off running, maybe could have had a short pass to Shane, who was open in the flat and might have scored. He hesitated and ran instead. Rob gave it to him on the sidelines. To me, you have to get the ball to Shane in space, esp. as a receiver. Seems like we've underused that side of him. Go back to Ellis to the Villanova game two years ago when he missed him open. QBs want the home run but Shane is a home run if you can get him the ball and he's 1 on 1 against a DB.

Watching the game back, the read option was not smooth at all. First time we get the ball inside the 5, pass over Gallahan's head, Flacco keeps on the option and somehow gets to the 1 after being hit, then Kobe Young gets the ball on the handoff from the Pistol and is stopped. Shame that Leatherbury couldn't score on that nice run after the catch but that's something we missed from last season. Not a lot of yards after the catch.

We pretty much have the same weapons as last season aside from Clark. But what we didn't have was Flacco. I suggested maybe he held the ball a little too long but Stover did the opposite. So it's really all about the quarterback.

Clark is limited right now physically. Imagine if he was healthy.

We definitely kept some things vanilla, especially on D. Not sure I love that but it is what it is with RA and his secrecy. A few players that didn't play last week could return to action like Dorsey, Tibo, Greaves. If Greenwood played (even if we was listed on the part. list), he should play more. Allen's injury not serious and neither was Ellis or Rusolillo.

Agreed about the play call on 2nd and 3rd and one in the second half after Kobe picked up 9 yds. Two passes there and a punt. The box is stacked? Run Kobe on the perimeter again.

    Tigers in the NFL/CFL/USFL/XFL thread

So Delaire. Dangerfield and Bushrod are in the NFL. Tye Smith is on IR. Waiting on Vito to practice squad and Twest is in limbo.

I don’t mind the fade with Flacco throwing the ball to a big target in one on one situations

He played some. Guess he’s still nicked up from a camp injury. He’s listed on participation chart.

I'm going to try and watch the game again on tape. I thought we were just laying the wood last night. DeBerry hits like a monster and he only played about half the game. Hayward was everywhere and Wallace was his typical self. Reaves didn't get a chance to show his ability but he had one pretty hard hit. I know it's tough to pressure a running QB like Harris but I'd really like to see us dial up more pressure and blitzes next week at Winston-Salem. I thought we were really nice to not blitz Morgan State when they were at their own 1-yard line. Maybe I missed something but it seemed like we got conservative on D as well as O in the second half.

Also, we need to finish drives better and it starts with the play-calling inside the 5. I don't mind throwing fades to Clark who is 6-6 or one of the Jabari's but the throw to Gallahan, it appears they were not on the same page after Flacco faked it. I think you have to use your hammer and that's Yeedee in short-yardage. We didn't have the last season or you run Shane or Kobe on the perimter. You can also use Flacco on keepers but he's been getting pounded all night. Tom also holds onto the ball for a long time, extending the play, which is cool but he also takes more hits that way. When he has time, he lets the play develop and throws a terrific intermediate pass. Something I haven't seen in many years. Enders was good at that as well though I think Flacco's arm was better. But they do have some similarities.

Not sure about Jabari Allen being on special teams with that skinny frame. I think that's where he got hurt. We had a ton of injuries tonight though two looked serious in Knudson and Rusolillo. We can afford to lose a receiver or two. Seems like we're getting thin there with no Greaves and no Dorsey due to injuries. Not sure how serious but they missed the last couple of weeks of camp. We used a million freshmen tonight because of that new rule where you can play freshmen for 4 games before you can redshirt them. I wonder if we use D'Argo Hunter if the injuries continue. He was terrific at the end of camp even though he's only 5-6/165.

    Comments from the game

Rob on game "Eight months of training. This wasn't about the game. Eight months of a different team. It's a family." On going with Flacco over Stover "We went with Tom because of experience. He's older. Ryan got a ton of experience last year, Tom is just more mature. They both ran the offense very well but Tom carried himself in a way...I just have a little more confidence in him just because he's an older guy. There's no substitute for that. I was pleased with how he played for the most part. He's 1-0 as a Tiger. But I'm a hard grader and he did some knucklehead stuff. It's always good to be able to teach during a win." On no-huddle offense "The fact that he could do it and not be here in the spring and learn it. We started doing this in January. He only got here in June.He did pick it up in 10 days and that's how smart he is. It's a testament to him and his work ethic and smarts, that he picked up something in 10 days that we started in January. On what he liked "As a team, we played for six seconds in a way I haven't seen in a couple of years. I'm not talking about one aspect. There was an effort and a focus that has not been here for three years. It's different." On What he didn't "When the ball is going to run into the end zone and you're not on the four-yard line, don't touch it. That would be a good idea. When we do the things we're supposed to do, we did them really well. When we stepped out of the box, is when we messed up." On running game "Considering what we just faced, I love our running game. We found a way to run the ball a little bit with 37 people in the box. We did not just line up and throw it every play. We knew we were going to throw. We didn't care. The fact that we protected enough to throw it and ran it enough, I'm encouraged. It's nowhere where it needs to be but I'm encouraged." On running back by committee? Yes and no. If you go back to when Terrance was first here and he didn't play much eralier in the season. We were stil rushing for 200+ yards per game with three guys. The more we can do that, the healthier we will be in the long run. But I will also tell you that if there is a guy that is hot, I'm smart enough to let him stay in." On Yeedee It hurt to watch him run over other people. I actually cringe when he was running the ball. I haven't seen anything like that since Darrius (Victo) was here." On Rob Heyward He had the best camp of any football player on this team and that's a hefty statement. He is as dialed in as I've seen on defense...If I say anymore Frank Beltre will kill me." On Aidan O'Neill breaking record He's a very talented soul. He's also an artist, which makes it challenging. He's back into his groove. His brain works differently. He's his own worst enemy in his head. I have to massage that to make him a fan of himself." Diondre Wallace It feels great (to hold MSU to 3 pts last 2 years). We did our job. They are a good team. They'll score some points this year. We did a good job of sticking together. It was a good team win tonight. On defense as a whole We have a lot of work to do. This was a good team but we're going to play better teams. We have to be ready for the kings of this league, the Villanova's and Richmond's. We have to go back to the drawing board and be ready to play Wake Forest next week. On INT It was worked out in practice. We anticipated that. The QB did a fake read. He just threw it and I was glad I was there to be able to make a play. It wouldn't have been made without the D-line putting up pressure. Good coverage from the back end. I just took advantage of an opportunity that was helped by the team. On the team We're hungry. We have a chip on our shoulder because they picked us 10th. We know we're not the 10th ranked team in this conference. Every day we're going to continue to get better. We're going to continue to hunt. We're going to make a statement. We're excited. We feel disrespected so we're going to prove that with our play. Togetherness, Comraderie, Chemistry. The last couple of years, the team was tight but not like this team. We want to do anything for the person next to use and in front and behind. That's what makes this team different.

Aidan O'Neill on keys to his success Staying focused. Taking it one kick at a time. Not thinking too much. One a time On why no kickoffs They are comfortable with the guy out there. When I first came here, they didn't want to get me hit on the field. He's a senior so I'm not going to take it away from him. Next year, you'll see me on kickoffs. Tom Flacco It was great to get a win. There's a lot of things to get better at but that's something for tomorrow. Tonight, we're going to be able to celebrate this win. Morgan State played hard like we thought we would. It was nice to get a pretty good win. On being named starter It's means everything in me that the coaches have trust in me to be the starter. Ryan is going to compete in practice very day. On being nervous I wasn't nervous at all. I was excited. These 7pm games are brutal. You have to wait all day. Everybody else is playing, you're sitting in that hotel. I was prepared and ready. On no huddle The offense that I've been playing with have been no-huddle. That wasn't a big adjustment for me but I was excited that it was new for Towson. We could surprise teams. We'll see what happens next week. On first couple of drives It's week 1. We have to get better. That's a good thing. We have room for improvement. We didn't finish those drives. A couple of fourth downs we didn't get. There were a couple of things I came up short on that I need to get better at and the team will get better.

Flacco looked really good. I'll have quotes from him and RA later. Wallace and Heyward were great. But Rob said we couldn't run because they stacked the box. Then we should have run on the perimeter more. Watching the Maryland game, they ran a million jet sweeps with their wide receivers. That's something we could do if you put Shane or Kobe in the slot. Thought Kobe looked great, Yeede was a punishing runner but Shane struggled against that stacked box. Have to get him out on the edge more. Rusolillo limped out of the locker room with a boot on his foot. Fortunately, Carnesale started last season but we really can't afford to lose a lot on the O-line. We do have some good subs in Cassels and Cheripko at guard but we're very young at tackle.. https://towsontigers.com/news/2018/9/1/football-retains-battle-for-greater-baltimore-trophy.aspx

    First chat tomorrow

Yes, Delaware lost yesterday at home to URI and Maine crushed New Hampshire. Not sure what that has to do with us but if you saw highlights, Delaware basically handed the game to the Rams with a botched snap over the head of the punter and three fumbles. Can't do that tomorrow. Don't turn it over and we should win big but you never know in this series. For those newbies, just go up to the Chatbox up top. I'll be there in the press box at game time, even a little before.
