Mahalak is "uncertain" for Md game

Yeah, I'm not sure when the coaching staff knew during the game or if they knew at all until late in the game, which is why Stover came back in the game for the 2nd time. It's a shame for MM because was having a good camp and that just didn't look like himself out there. My biggest problem though is the O-line. I re-watched the first 1 1/2 quarters and it was brutal.

Mahalak is "uncertain" for Md game

Mahalak was injured against Morgan St and I'll leave at that for privacy reasons. That explains some of the inaccuracy and decisions. But Stover can't get the job done if there is no protection

I doubt it though stranger things have happened. I need to find more info before I speculate.

    Offense was offensive

We're going back and forth. Assuming you saw the game, not sure how you can defend the last series of throwing the ball. That's not hindsight; it's Football 101. I'll assume from the way he acted in the press conference, Rob was not happy with a lot of things on offense. When you put up 102 yards of total offense, unless you are playing Alabama, everyone is going to be questioned, from the coaching to the execution. I just started watching the game again and there were way too many missed blocks just in the first quarter

    Offense was offensive

Well if there was no whining, there would be no message boards. I'm the one usually defending the staff, but I just can't after Saturday night. When your own coach says you "stunk" on offense after posting 102 total yards against one of the worst MEAC teams, you know you have a lot of work to do. If Alabama beat Fresno State next week by 10 points on 200 yards of offense, do you think their fans would be happy? Play better against Maryland, compete with them, put up 300+ yards of offense and the fans will be a lot happier when they lose because they are looking ahead to the CAA.

    Offense was offensive

Yeah, the last "real" possession made zero sense. Throwing the ball with a r-freshman quarterback up 10-0 with under 3 minutes left. Just go three-and-out with three straight runs and make them call their timeouts. Throwing to Leatherbury, a primary deep threat who might be 180 pounds, a swing pass was absurd. Brent Richardson would have made more sense but he seemed to running deeper routes most of the night. He's more of a possession receiver. Nothing made sense last night on offense.

OFFICIAL CELEBRATION THREAD -- TOWSON 10, MORGAN 0

I kind of dread waking up when we lose, hoping that maybe that was a bad dream. Last night could have been nightmare, but we did somehow win despite having that feeling of dread. Despite O'Neill missing a chipshot (he was 18-of-22 last year), the offense doing nothing, and Morgan State imploding every time they got near the red zone. Despite last night's performance, I don't see a 2-3 win season but I never predicted playoffs either. I was hoping that 7 wins as a max and that certainly looks far off even if you think (I do) that last night was a bit of a fluke offensively. This has to be a wake-up call for the offensive coaches. Very little adjustment last night and that's what's perplexing. Even though the last scrimmage was pretty good, sounds like they struggled in practice this week. Not sure if they were focused on the task at hand or were thinking about Md. I guess why that is tough to start with Morgan State and have Maryland as the next game. No matter how much you tell the kids about the next six seconds, they are still human. As Rob said in the presser, to paraphrase that Morgan State didn't look this good on film. I'm guessing they totally underestimated the Bears on both sides of the ball. I'm going to watch the game again at some point and I wonder defensively if we even played that well or their mistakes (bad passes, drops, penalties) were their undoing. On the good side, we had three sacks and held them to 3 of 14 on third downs. That's a lot better than last season's 48% rate allowed by the D on 3rd down. R-freshman Bryce Carter had one and transfer Grant Udinski from Davidson added a 1/2 sack. Carter had six tackles coming off the bench which is impressive for a r-freshman in his first game. Let's also not forget that this was the first FCS game for Leatherbury and first college game for Brent Richardson, Rodney Dorsey and Adrian Platt. Greenwood barely played at Kentucky other than special teams so expect a bit of a learning curve for the receivers. Jordan Waite was a OLB/DE and now is starting at FB. The tight ends other than Joe Green basically have no experience (why not play juco transfer Metise Moore?). What the coaches have to understand is that they need to rely on Shane if the offense is not moving. Not just running him out of the backfield but putting him in the slot with either C.J. or Platt or James Scott or David Bryant at RB.

I would hope Beltre would have a shot to be the first Dominican in the NFL to go on the practice squad. But at 27 or whatever he is, that's going to be a longshot.

    Offense was offensive

Next week could and should be ugly, even if we put up 30 points tonight. However, the offense starts with the coordinator and ends with the quarterback. If those two parts are not performing, we are in trouble. We were going up against a stacked box all night and we couldn't take advantage of them in man coverage. RA pointed to the fact that they were tackling our receivers and sometimes they got away with it but I can't buy that. Running more would be nice but I'm not sure it would have worked. Our line struggled all night but you are still are blocking 5 on 8 and need help from the FB/TE if they are in. I also think we should have gone to the hurry-up. It seemed to work at the end of the first half in a two-minute drill. Why not try it in the second half? I hope there isn't a lack of talent but maybe at WR, we will miss Summers and Dessenburg early on because we don't have a #1 receiver. We basically have a few No. 2s and a lot of unknowns. But I also think that we can't take too much out of this game on offense with so many new parts. On the line, we have three new starters and one in Antonio Harris who is moving from left guard to left tackle. We have six or seven brand new receivers.

OFFICIAL CELEBRATION THREAD -- TOWSON 10, MORGAN 0

One of the most disappointing wins and opening wins I've ever covered. The lack of ingenuity on offense against a stacked box was shocking. Mahalak was brutal, the receivers couldn't get much separation, the line struggled, the tight ends and fullbacks missed blocks. It was truly ugly. And RA said it himself, "we stunk on offense", and we were outcoached offensively. I thought they were joking when they came with the OL depth chart. That's not what I saw all summer but maybe that was the plan. To start Rusolillo at left guard and Antonio Harris at left tackle, moving Andrew Garnett to right tackle and D'Mitri Francis as the backup LT. I thought we'd be able to run but didn't think they'd go with single coverage all night and put safeties in the box. Why didn't we try to run with four wideouts and spread them out? IDK. I didn't get the offensive gameplan all night, starting with putting C.J. Williams at the wildcat on the first drive. He got hurt on the play but Rob said he could have gone back in the game. I don't know what happened with Mahalak or why he went to the locker room. I don't think RA knew. But I know he's better than this. He was better last season in the last three games with a banged up throwing shoulder. Stover was pretty good coming into the game but I think you go back to Morgan next week. Apparently they had it in the gameplan to get Stover some "reps" but I'm sure didn't think he'd be going into the game after MM threw his third pick. He moved the team downfield and hit Morgan Scroggins for a nice game. Morgan Scroggins by the way, is the game receiver, who is being moved to safety and made two tackles tonight. All in all, incredibly disappointed with the offense and gameplan but I think this is a wake up call. If they play like this against Maryland, they will have negative total yards. And my guess is that some guys were looking ahead or not taking this game as seriously as they should, especially after the Terps downed Texas today.
