Yesterday was a display of coaching and execution.  More importantly, it was a message to Towson…We have the biggest D*%#k in this conference.
Ive watched  Charleston overcome lesser athletic ability by out coaching and out executing their opponents.  Yesterday was a prime example of how they do it.

A rare agreeable post between us. 🫡

With 2 games left in the season, May is our leading scorer, averaging 11.4 ppg, which puts him on pace to have the lowest gaverage points per game of a leading scorer on a Skerry team, breaking the record of Four McGlynn, who was the leading scorer on the 2014-15 team (which went 12-20), averaging 12ppg.

Last time I checked, this is 2024, not 1964. You’re simply not going to be truly successful (I’m not talking about 17-12, 5th/6th place in the conference) when you’re leading scorer is averaging 11.4 ppg

Yikes. I knew it was close but didn’t think it was Four (hahah) that long ago. Williamson took over a few of those games late in that stretch and thought he would use that as a springboard. Hope he can next year since this one is done. He does things Towson players haven’t been able to, penetrate, create his own shot and pass. He and Tejada should take the most shots since they are our best chances at points (and also two guys who don’t hit the offensive glass obviously) and if they miss allows for our guys to go get them

Being honest is not being dreary. In the abstract, anything’s possible, but it’s difficult to foresee a realistic path to the dance, after 13 years of futility. I mean I suppose every other team in the CAA could wind up on probation, but other than that….

    Hahahah

See, that’s the thing. I don’t blame the players, I blame the coach. The players seem to be nice kids and it’s certainly not their fault for accepting a scholarship. In fact, some of these kids have heart wrenching stories (I think both Jones and Paar have lost their mother). But it’s hard to watch Paar trying to hedge on defense, and it’s hard to watch guys like Jones and Sulaiman, who simply don’t have the athleticism to sustain success against quicker, more athletic forwards. I can’t answer your question about Jones. If anyone can, I’d certainly like to hear from them

It is difficult. And I was being facetious

Tarke was supposed to be good defensively. He did earn MEAC All-Defensive team twice and led the nation in steals in one year. Maybe he's a little heavy and the fact that we don't press is a reason why he doesn't get as many steals per game (Coppin pressed and was 19th in tempo). But Tarke's defense isn't the big problem. It's his offense, his shot selection, his lack of passing when he started out like Jason Kidd, his lack of explosiveness, his lack of finishing, and his shooting. He's been banged up but I don't think he's had a serious injury. He just seems a lot slower than expected, again going back to lack of speed and athleticism overall on this team.

I don’t disagree. Knew he wasn’t going to carry us on offense, like many here thought.  Savior he was not going to be. But I really thought he would be good defensively.  He is not.

Let me put this to everyone…who would you want back next year, of those who played this season? (Thus not counting Watson). As for me, it’s a very short list…DWill, Lowery and Tejada. As for May, while I won’t be rooting for him to leave, if he does, I won’t lose a wink of sleep

That’s not nice! We need to be positive and nice to the players on here!

I’ll take those 3 and May. Maybe Suliman. The thing is no one is a star and can carry the team. Whether that be the player themselves, or strategy or both.  Charleston has a team of role players that fit their system and are terrifically coached. Won back to back caa titles with that strategy. If we could get 10 solid role players and a good strategy that’s fine. But it won’t happen.  Kelsey has gotten 3-5 D2/NAIA players come in and work out. We had Sylla and Suliman who were highly regarded and have been ok I guess.
How does jones go from 9-5 shooting 64% to 4-3 shooting under 45%?!

I really hope Tarke doesn't come back next year. As has been noted in other threads, he's slow-footed and seems to get his shot blocked more often than not when going to the basket. As for those long-range bricks he throws up ... he even managed an airball on one attempt today. To my mind, he adds next to nothing to our lineup. At least Williamson has some moves when driving and also mixes in a fairly accurate step-back shot.

And, at the risk of sounding too dreary, I have NO HOPE of us reaching the NCAAs this decade. Nothing has changed with this coach, and nothing will. The AD is happy that we got 4,300 people into the arena today -- even if a third of them were kids showing their autism solidarity. I doubt there were 100 students in the "student section." The fact that we'll finish with a (barely) winning record will qualify this year as a success.

Cannot agree more. Add in he isn’t good defensively. The black and gold glass wearers will say “meac dpoty!”  Haven’t seen it. He’s not. Maybe he’s injured?

There is no hope at making it to a final let alone the NCAA with this staff. Plain and simple.  Unfortunately you’re right about the AD and students today. It’s pathetic that a school with 22k can’t get 200+ students out. He’s ecstatic about the state of the program, like some on here, and just shrug their shoulders and say “he’s done a lot and deserves it! Nothing we can do”

Not much that can be added. We were thoroughly outclassed on both sides of the floor. I’ve been preaching that we need scorers, and today was Exhibit A in that argument. Either our coach is unwilling, or unable, to adapt his strategy.  You can only go so far with the “play hard D and crash the boards” strategy. (Frankly, I’m not sure how good the D has even been this year, but when you play as painfully slow as we do, the opponent’s ppg naturally will be low, simply because they don’t get that many possessions).  This antiquated system is good enough to beat up on the Campbell’s and Stony Brook’s of the world, but that’s about it.

We’ve got Williamson and Tarke going forward, as far as guys who’ve shown flashes on the offensive end. I’m not sure you can really count May, although in fairness I will say it took until Timberlake’s 3rd year until he avg’d in double digits. I’m of the mind that Skerry almost has to blow most of the roster up and bring in new players, except I have almost no confidence the new guys will be any different than the guys who depart-a bunch of guys who look imposing walking through the airport, but can’t throw a beach ball in the ocean.

4th place is slipping away, if it already hasn’t done so. Best case scenario on the upcoming road trip is a split, though I wouldn’t be surprised if we went 0-2. I’m resigned to a relatively quick exit from the tournament and then the Groundhog Day exercise of hoping we’ll finally have enough skilled offensive players to get to the promised land. I keep waiting, and waiting and waiting.

Defense isn’t good. It’s masked by the slowness. We need to blow up the roster again (say this every year but give the coach a pass 🤷‍♂️ )

road trip? Guaranteed 0-2. 3 road wins all year. Whatever seed we are, we will lose the first game

  7. Didn’t expect a win but that was pure ugly.  Charleston had a game plan and executed. Credit to them but it’s much easier when you have an actual coach, who can coaches and make adjustments.  (Made a ton from the first game). They made our average defense work and proved them to be a soft and overrated (as we all knew, well some)

    On to next season!

  8. Tough game. Cougars come in hot, 6 straight and 19 of 23 since their 1 and 3 start.
Good news is that they played Monday and Thursday this week. Bad news is, they are the best team in the CAA to handle that. Depth. 10 guys average 10 or more minutes pee game and only one over 25.

Gonna need a repeat of our first game against them (minus the late foul shooting) to win.   Should be a good size crowd. Ironically enough, they are 9-2 on the road with both road losses coming at the hands of a sell out game

17-11. Notwithstanding the Hampton fiasco, we’re still in play for a top 4 finish. Not sure why you say the games against C of C & UNCW won’t be interesting in that regard. I’m not willing to bet the mortgage we beat C of C Saturday, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility either.

stony brook Drexel and Delaware will all like cross each other out since they all play each other.  Likely have 1 to be a top 4 candidate.
Charleston is one win away from locking one up. Uncw needs 1 probably 2 and has a tough finish. As does Hofstra.  But Hofstra has the tiebreaker over us as would uncw with a win. It’s all lot right now and will be clearer on Sunday morning. But watch out for Monmouth to sneak in…

I was saying if we had beaten Hampton, we would be 11-4 going into a huge game tomorrow.  It’s still important but losses some of the luster being 2 back with 3 to play.

and no *s next to wins. 16-11 is 16-11 and secures a winning season

There he is! Mr. only after a win.  Hope to see you post 5-6 more times this year!

  10. 16-11 winning season! Throw the damn parade! Give the life time extension!
In all seriousness good game especially by our role players.  Tejada was great offensively. And lowery did a number on rice.  Love a game when 24 doesn’t shoot and think he’s lebron james. Also messiah was great offensively atleast, when he actually payed
too bad we hacked up a game Saturday or the games against Charleston and uncw could have been interesting.

For whatever it is worth, I guarantee we win at least two more games this regular-season. I don't know if I am willing to go any more than that. We could go 4-0 and we could go 1-3 (again, more likely 2-2). I don't say that to be optimistic or pessimistic, this team has just been mixed bag of good and awful this year and I think that is the mixed bag we probably get these last four games.

My thought process was, if we any pride whatsoever, come out strong tonight.  Saturday they see the large crowd and tv camera and do what they usually do 💩 the 🛌.  A &T is decent at home and we stink on the road so.  And then think we play well first half on Saturday then trask takes over and uncw wins a close one (just because somehow skerry is good head to head against siddle)

I’m going to have to disagree with you that expecting to have made it to even just one conference title game, in 13 years, is unreasonable. I’m also going to have to disagree that fear of regressing under a new coach is reason to keep a coach who thus far, in not a small sample size, has proven unable to win when it most matters.

CT spraining his ankle: C of C dropping 3’s (might as well add in the loss to W&M at the Baltimore Civic Center, when we had Benimon)…I’m sorry, but that’s losers talk. Results matter, and never having even made it out of the conference tournament semifinals in well over a decade isn’t good enough

Kentucky and Towson comparison should start and end with both teams have feline mascots 😆

We are just supposed to be this program that’s thankful to playing according to that guy and others.  We are talking 15 years ago!  We all know where we were and where we are now. But that’s not good enough now.

There’s always excuses from these people on losses. The reason why we lose in march isn’t those, it’s the coaching and the style of play.  That simple. END OF DISCUSSION.

We may regress under a new coach but definitely not  1-31 and academic probation (which both were a result of being to cheap to get rid of a stale coach((oh the irony ))) WM did but that’s a risk you need to be willing to take   Ceiling currently is basically 500 and has been under Pat.  I would take a few bad years with a new coach if it meant we would have a chance to win

  13. 😂. 😂 and some more 😂

after the last 4 games, there’s no reason to think we can go 4-0 lol. I mean I think if there’s any pride in themselves they come to Friday and maybe contain XANDER rice. But besides that there’s probably 3 L in a row going into dc
