That's the million dollar question. But haven't lost to garbage, falling to NE, Charleston, Hofstra and W&M at home. Played their best games of the year against Drexel and Delaware. I just think when the going gets tough, there is a certain mental toughness needed to get over the hump and maybe even a leadership issue. No reason, even if we're the fifth-best team in the league as I predicted, that we couldn't steal a game from a really good team at home. Even UNCW has. Maybe it's a fact that all those four squads have superstars and we don't. Even Delaware has one in Darling.

Hmm could be. But other teams have played well/decent here as well. Winning on the road anywhere is tough.

I don’t think we have done a good job of playing to our strengths this season. But I’ll bring that up when the season is over.

  2. I also want to add, they need to find out why we struggle at home recently and are pretty good on the road. Yes secu isn’t Cameron and it’s not fun playing in front of twice as many yellow seats as people. But Hofstra, Ne, Wm, Charleston sort of beat us pretty handily.

What are we doing differently on the road. In the caa 5-2 on the road and 4-4 at home

  3. Also. Lots of shots were short tonight especially by betrand and Gibson. Fatigue may be setting in with them playing more than they ever have before.

But William and Mary is a good defense team now. Have to give them some credit as their guards were relentless on the permitter and got away with lots of physical play.

Defense and physical play from the geeks?! What is the world coming to?!

And what happened when he tried to take it to the basket a few times tonight?  He got his shit swatted by Tunstall.  Yeah, he's the conference POY by a landslide but he should be owning the paint with his strength and versatility.  But hey, congrats, he can audition for the G League slam dunk contest.

Now get off my lawn and let me watch my Law & Order.

I think you missed my point. As I was agreeing with you and the dunking during warmups. He was lazy with it very nonchalant.  If I was a coach I wouldn’t want my stat player doing it that much.

To be fair he got a lot better and more athletic in his 4 years there.  If I was a Wm fan I would be so maddened that he doesn’t own the paint. Or that they don’t go inside to him more often and play through him.

Speaking of that. Why did we just try once in the easy part of the second half to go at him?! (The sanders turnover). He had 2 fouls already!

Thompson should only get better, but something needs to be done with his foul shot. Sanders was MIA on offense...again. The year he sat out, I did was by someone very close to the program that the expectation was he would be a 12 & 7 guy. It just never happened. Wish him the best when he’s done playing here, but I won’t miss him once he’s gone.

There’s just too many guys on this team who, absent an outlier game, are not going to contribute much in terms of scoring (really, everyone on the team, expect Fobbs, Betrand & occasionally Gibson). I just don’t see this as a recipe to winning 3 straight (assuming we avoid the PIG) in the conference tournament

Kudos to Fobbs for joining the 1,000 point club

What happened with his shot?! It didn’t look like that last week at Drexel. His form was more than adequate then.

    Congrats to Brian.

Betrand needs to get that mid range pull up/floater game working again.

  6. What a pathetic effort by both the players and staff tonight. Offense was awful. With that said, as bad as we played we were still in the game under 8 TO. Bigs gave us nothing but fouls tonight.

I didn’t want to be the one who said we peaked, there’s still games left.. but they could have. Not having gray to atleast spread the floor tonight and take away the two 6’11 guys out of the paint. Somme questionable calls and crews who swallow their whistle hurts us as we rely on tight calls and getting to the line.

Chris you should have seen knights pregame warmups. 75% were dunks. 360 off the bounce windmills etc. Crazy

magic number is 1 to clinch 6 seed. A win Saturday and Delaware win clinches 5 seed at worst which is a meh spot to be in

I understand the athletic department has to start with small goals, but they are pulling out all the stops to try to get get 1,200 students to the game. TU is nearing an enrollment of 25,000 students. So if they somehow do get 1,200 students in the arena tonight, that’s less than 5 percent of the student body in attendance. Pretty insane, we have so far to go. I watched the VCU game on Monday night (former CAA school), the arena was filled to the top and their student sections on both sides were packed and going crazy. They play in the A10, those schools don’t have much more if any, name recognition as the CAA. Where did TU Athletics go wrong? Has attendance always been this bad? I graduated in 2018 so have only been following for a few years.

TU18, since you are semi new to the boards, we frequently mention attendance. Winning more consistently and winning bigger games will help some, but it is what it is at this point. Student attendance has been pitiful and has consistently gotten worse since year 1 of SECU. Even in the old Towson Center days, we have 50 or so students standing behind the hoop with the band on the wooden bleachers and a few hundred (250-400) sitting behind the visitors bench. That was a crappy arena and for crappy teams. Why haven't they come over to SECU? It's not further than the TC. Promotions/prizes are just as good. Team is better. Facility much better.

What was the vibe around campus when you graduated about athletics? How did they market the programs/games to you guys? Did you go to games?

The A-10 does have better name recognition than the CAA especially in the past 5-10 years. They are a better conference that gets multiple teams in the NCAA Tournament and wins games there. 2019-2, 2018-3, 2017-3, 2016-3, 2015-3, 2014-4, 2013-5. Basketball is also almost all of those schools #1 program and a priority.  In the CAA we have schools that value other programs such as NE-Hockey, JMU- Football, Towson-Lacrosse.  The football aspect also hurts the CAA as most A-10 schools do not have football. Going back to 2015 Championship, only 1 of the teams participating in it had a football program and the last team to win the CAA Title with a football program was Delaware in 2014...

As Mat said, VCU went to a Final Four. They also have a ton of students and play games on TV.

What we'd like to have happen tonite:

    We beat W&M (required)

Drexel beats Hofstra (not mandatory but would be extra helpful)

NE beats Delaware (not end of world if it doesn't happen)

A win tonight clinches a top 6 spot. As does both a  Drexel and Elon loss.

There's very little shot of getting 4,000. I do hear they expect big crowds on both days. Hopefully close to 3,000.

Yeah I know haha. Kind of wish it was the Saturday one this week. 2 pm on a Saturday would be a decent crowd. I bet a lot of nerds would come up for a Saturday game

Let’s just start with this. Getting 1,200 students to a Towson basketball game on a Thursday night is nearly impossible but I think you need more than this.

Yes, more is needed. I doubt 1,200 students on campus know the AD's name let alone what he looks like. A for effort though...

BTW, I haven't received it yet, but normally I get the ballots for the All-CAA team around this time. Right now, I'd have:

    1st team

    Riller -POY
    Knight (close second)
    Buie
    Darling
    Roland

    2nd team
    Fobbs
    Pemberton
    Cam Wynter
    Sheffield
    Van Vliet

    3rd team
    Betrand
    James Butler
Matt Lewis (high scoring avg. Very inefficient)
Jaylen Sims UNCW gets a gift
    Last one is tough
    Brevin Galloway from Charleston
Ryan Allen from Delaware but that could change

Tunstall might make all-defensive team again since he's second in the league in blocks, though he's not having a great year defensivley. But considering we lead the league in field goal defense and points against, somebody should.

We hardly agree on a lot Mat, but this is pretty spot on.

    I would go..

    1st Team:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Knight-POY
    Riller (close second)
    Buie
    Darling
Roland (Most valuable to their team)

** Could go to any of these, Like the standings its pretty wide open**

    2nd team:
    Fobbs
    Pemberton
    Wynter
    Sheffield
    Van Vliet

    3rd team:
    Betrand
    Butler
    Lewis
    Galloway
    Allen

Sims and Brace can sneak in too

    Defensive Team:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Tunstall                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Knight

    Mutts

    Buie (DPOTY)

    Winter

    Galloway

    Rookies:

    Walker (ROTY)

    McIntosh

    Woods

    Phillips

Gibson/Ervin for the last spot. I'll give it to Gibson for a homer pick.

    Coach of the Year:

Need to wait until the season is over. But if Elon can finish 9-9, 8-10, I'd go with Schrage, but Inglesby or Fischer could win it too. Yes FBS or Bust, I didn't choose Coen.

The road to the 1 seed and the NIT bid:

--Win the last 4 games (anything less than that makes it pretty much impossible).  That puts us at 13-5.

--By winning all 4 games, we give W&M their 6th loss.  It would help if they win their last 2 against JMU & Elon (more on that shortly).

--By winning all 4 games, we give Hofstra their 3rd loss.  We'd need them to lose one more game (they have at Del/Drexel and JMU left) so they'd need to lose one of those roadtrip games.  That would make them 13-5

--Delaware loses one more game (they have home NE/Hofstra & at Charleston/UNCW left).  They won't get thru that undefeated.

--Charleston loses one more game to give them 7 conference losses (they've come this far with 6, 7 is pretty likely).

So that would leave the standings as this:

Towson & Hofstra 13-5, W&M & Delaware 12-6, Charleston 7+ losses.  W&M swept Delaware so they get the 3 which is important because if I remember correctly, the second tiebreaker after head-to-head is record against the next best team in the standings.  So us and Hofstra split.  Move down to that next best team which is W&M and we swept them while Hofstra has a loss to them.

So there's the map.  A tall hill to climb but this conference season hasn't made too much sense much like the rest of the country.  Start it with a win over W&M on Thursday night.

Just what could have been if we didn't play like crap in the second half against Charleston at home. Would be really in the thick of things and have lots of ties in tiebreakers that would make it crazy. Honestly, besides JMU, any of the other 9 can win a game or two in DC and honestly there are 6-7 with a true chance to make the title game. Pair that with it being a centralized (to the conference, not to ANYTHING else) location and it being a tiny arena, should be a wild tournament.

Also, you provided a lot of information there. Just wanted to share this cool site for anyone interested in scenarios, for all sports:

They blew double digit leads in the second half to two of the worst teams in the conference.  Inexcusable.

Just because you bloviate on here all the time doesn't make you a bigger fan than others.

I just think you enjoy being miserable.

Bahaha and we got absolutely steamrolled by them at home. They have a better NET and RPI. Along with winning the conference last year, lost the best player in the conf to graduation, 2 sudden transfers and their only big to injury. So your point..

No it does not but being a bigger fan does. And much more than you.

“FBS or bust” hoping that name is more of a joke than your posts

Northeastern has been unlucky??  Because your beloved Coach Coen isn't having a good year??  My god man.  How about they blew double digit leads to Elon and UNCW in the final 10 minutes.  That's not unlucky that's choking.  If that happened to Towson you would be screaming your lungs out about bad contract extensions and how horrible everything is. I'm sorry this season hasn't played out to your narrative.  The Tigers are exceeding pre season expectations and it's killing you.

    Man up.

LOL. read the other threads. I’ve given skerry credit for winning close games and a winning streak. Something he’s never done before. Prove to us that you can lead us in a tourney run and then let’s talk.

I’m a bigger fan that anyone and want us to win exceeding whose expectations??  With what we had back and what other teams didn’t top 3 should have been a given

Don’t be a clown. Look a their stats. They should be way better than their record. Lost every game by 1-2 and blow out others. He has one good player and is still in thick of a top 3-4 record...

Interesting as some other poster would say. Of course, somebody will likely transfer out this season. It's not like we're the only school that has players entering the transfer portal. This is an epidemic across the country. But there was one year where a key guy transferred out that wasn't shall we say pushed away and that was Zane. So this entire board is worried about every key player leaving. If it happens, it happens. That's why recruiting is year-round. Instead of just working on 2021, they are also working on 2020. Most mid-majors do. High majors do as well because guys f-ing leave either to the NBA or to the transfer portal. It's just part of the game. Does anybody really care about who left the program? Most were a non-contributor, underachieved or was a non-contributor at their transfer school because they shot for the moon (JG).

Ingram was a different issue due to some personal circumstances. He actually wanted to return, but we moved on.

As for scoring, when Zane left, didn't we pick up Brian Fobbs? The problem was we were depending on Jordan McNeill to step up and several freshmen who weren't ready. Of course, PS knows we need a scorer, but what about Mims? Can he score like Fobbs? He was never given a chance at Long Beach. But I don't think he can create his own shot. He can shoot the three. That's pretty much all I've seen from him. Even at Long Beach, he took just 6 threes, but made three of them. We do need more than a shooter, but a shot creator. Darrick Jones might be really good, how the hell we do we know? If you watch his videos and I guess I was the only one that watched that ESPN game, he was sitting there watching Cam Thomas shoot pretty much every shot. Thomas is a 5* going to LSU and might be one-and-done.

So to me, it's all about Mims playing the 3. Fobbs is not irreplaceable just like Zane wasn't. Not saying we didn't miss his 20ppg. But was he a winner? A defender? A passer? An efficient scorer? A clutch player? Maybe he's learning how to be one at New Mexico. He definitely had talent. Though I just checked his numbers again and he's struggling from the three-point line.

    https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/4067320/zane-martin

I tend to see next year as glass-half-full, even if this class is shall we say, "iffy"? Because we don't know what we're getting, especially in Biekeu and Jones. Mims didn't play at Long Beach and Victor didn't play at USC. But again, what are we losing on offense other than Fobbs? Do you think we can replace Dennis Tunstall's incredible 4.4 points per game? Juwan Gray, in a down year, averaged 7.0 points per game off the bench. Is it possible he can average 10ppg as a starter? Sure, you might be missing out on DT's rebounding and paint D, but Victor will make up for that.

And what about Victor? He's replacing Sanders' 9ppg and 6.5rpg. Maybe he will match that, but let's say he averages 8ppg, 6rpg and 2bpg. But what if Charles Thompson improves his game and averages 6ppg and 5rpg off the bench, assuming he plays around 15-20mpg at the 5 and 4. Needs a whole summer to work on that shot, but he'll put on 10 pounds of muscle and will hold his own in the paint. Solomon could be the X-factor because he has potential as a scorer and is a good athlete.

I could talk all day about next season but for the upteenth time, do you know who holds it together and gives us a bright future? Jason Gibson. He's averaging 8ppg. Put another 10 pounds on him and with a summer of getting stronger, he'll start finishing those drives to the rim. He'll get a tad more athletic. Do you realize since conference play started, Jason Gibson is shooting 42% from beyond the arc in 14 games. He's averaging 9.3 points and shooting 87.1% from the line. That's freaking impressive considering he had that rough patch in conference play for about seven games and went scoreless in three straight. Most freshmen hit the wall later; he hit his in December. I can easily see him average 12ppg and here's a kid I thought would average ultimately 4-5 assists per game, but he's more of a scorer than I thought. But he can be a playmaker as well and make guys better. Is there a correlation with this offense since Gibson became a starter and began playing close to 30 minutes a game? Yes there is. As long as we have him, he'll help Betrand, Mims and hopefull Timberlake. Even Darrick Jones, assuming we run more.

I feel like fobbs is better overall than Zane. Better defender. Way better rebounder. More coachable and better teammate.

Can Solomon, victor and Charles give more than frosh Charles, Dennis And sanders? Probably

Charleston loss to Northeastern has got me confused. One hand we could be in third after tonight’s games. On the other, there’s less room for error now to stay out of the play in games.

Not sure how it’s confusing. NE is a better team and had had very bad luck this year. Charleston is a one man show. Just happens that they had the best shooting day of their lives against us
