I agree with most of what you are saying. I just hate general complaining with no realistic analysis or solutions. I also hate calling out people personally, but I do agree that this program likely needs change. Here are my answers to the questions I posed.

    1) I believe the AD and leadership of the Athletic Department needs to change before I would feel comfortable getting rid of Skerry and hiring another coach.
    2) As for the analysis of it could not be worse. I can't disagree more with you. We have hired three head coaches since Truax. Their total combined record was 132-272 overall (Jaskulski - 37-76, Hunt - 23-63, Kennedy 72-143), 70-182 in conference play (Jaskulski 22-50, Hunt - 12-42, Kennedy - 36-90) and 8-14 in conference tournament play (Jaskulski 3-4, Hunt 1-3 and Kennedy 4-7).

Skerry has had a miserable 2+ years, but he is light years better than those hires (except the conference tournament record admittedly where he is actually worse at 2-7). That does not mean we should be afraid to make a change, get a new coach and start a new direction. However, based on Towson's track record we could hire three or four more guys and suck worse than we have under Skerry. Again, that does not mean we should be afraid to do it. I just hate the sentiment around here that if we get rid of Skerry things will automatically be better. History shows us there is a good chance that is wrong.

    3) There are definitely good coaches out there, but do they want to come here, will we give them enough money to do so and are they the right fit? This is harder to find than people on here think. I hope if and when a move is made that we are ready to answer these questions and make a serious commitment to the program. We all deserve an NCAA Tournament bid and a better team on annual basis.

I'm not talking about an old has been re-tread coach.  Again, not defending either of Pat's, but Kennedy had to coach in the glory years of the CAA, in a shitty arena, with no funds (pregame meals at The Glen Dining Hall and B&G Catering), along with no academic support. Those CAA teams had numerous NBA players on it. We (the CAA) haven't put anyone in the league recently except Damion Lee, recently. (I know the 2 from last year in the G league currently)

We are not the same University or program that we were when they hired Kennedy in 04. New arena, more support, better recruits, better academics, etc.

    3. You won't know until you try. Look at WM. They fired a coach who was head and shoulders more successful than Skerry. The old geezers in Williamsburg lost their shit. And yes, its early it year one, but a sort of no name, 3-5th choice is doing a good job there considering the blow back and mess left behind. (Yes Knight and a transfer helped, everyone else is essentially new) Skerry is  very fairly compensated MM coach.

Pat Kennedy should have been arrested for theft.  The man spent more time at Joey Chu's lounge then he did at the university.

    🤣😂 That is 100% true.

How many postseason teams did that CAA have? How many in the top 100 in rankings?  I can tell you for a fact its less than 2011. Anyone who thinks that the CAA was better two years ago or any of the years since the Virginia schools left , is lost.

I only see one way of ending his contract prematurely.  That is reverting back to the 5 wins or less seasons from which we came from during the Pat's cats era. Higher ups would have no choice but to make a change. That may be difficult since he does recruit moderately well. Coaching and developing is a different story...

5 win seasons under PK aren't much worse than 12 win season Skerry. The CAA is awful in comparison and the easy D2/D3/NAIA games.

This is not meant to defend Skerry, but there has pretty much been total ineptitude around this program since the last year of Terry Truax (95-96 was our last solid non-Skerry year) and everyone else before Skerry (not just Kennedy). There have been some pretty good years under Skerry, but this is all starting to go in the wrong direction. Everyone who has criticized Skerry has a very one-sided, short-term memory view of this program. However, I will agree with most of what is being said at this point because since the end of the 2017-18 season this program has mostly been a debacle. I just have three questions:

What is your realistic plan to replace Skerry? (I know this has been talked about plenty)
How are you going to get a better coach with the current decision-makers in place?
Who are the realistic candidates for Towson based on our budget and job stature that you think can do better based on what this program has been for the last 23-24 years?

So ineptitude for a period time, means we shouldn't try and get better?  SOT philosophy.

Before the Skerry lovers bite my head off. I AM NOT COMPARING OUR PROGRAM TO THESE.  But Baylor, Charleston, St Marys, just to name a few, were morbid programs and had serious issues within their programs. They got the right coach and look a them all now.

Yes, we don't have the money to replace him now (other smaller schools can but we can't hmmm).

It wouldn't be worse than the coaching is right now. Pats a solid recruiter, Nice guy, Awful X and O coach and Poor at developing players. Prove me wrong.

A young up and coming assistant would take the job. Someone who is hungry for their shot and to prove themselves.  The geezers here will respond "but he will leave in a few years for a bigger job!"  HELL YES! We would love that, because it meant he made his mark here and improved/won. There are good young coaches out there that are on the benches. Winthrop found Kelsey, Charleston found Grant, ETSU found Forbes, Delaware may or may not have found Inglesby.

Skerry was lucky enough to replace total ineptitude in Pat Kennedy (in fairness was in a tougher CAA). When you replace total ineptitude you often get rewarded for achieving mediocrity. My brother went to the University of Hartford and they are in the same exact position with their coach John Gallagher.

My condolences for your family and your college hoops nightmares.

And who do we have?  Nobody.  Read that again.  N-O-B-O-D-Y.  Every team in this conference with the exception of probably Elon and JMU has someone on the team that when you look at the scouting report, you say, "we need to make sure we stop this guy".  We don't have that.  And we haven't had that really since Benimon left (you could make the case for Moto or Morsell but they were prone to disappear on their own more than what the opponents did to them).  All we have are a bunch of complementary players who, if they were paired with an alpha dog, might light it up on a regular basis as well.  And because it's a bunch of spare parts, we get the inconsistency we see on a game-by-game basis.  The team that I saw take Florida to the wire is light years away from where we're at now.  But given what we've seen in the first 14 games, it makes sense.  Play great at Florida, clank a home game against Kent State, throw away a win against Buffalo, blitz the hell out of St. Joe's, come back from yakking a lead against Tulane, embarrass yourselves against NE and in the 2nd half against Hofstra.  Get used to it the rest of the season because who knows what we're gonna get on a nightly basis.  It comes down to recruiting and while the staff might be 'trusting their eyes', it's become pretty obvious that they need to go see the ophthalmologist.  Unfortunately for them, the culture of the program is such that it won't be attractive to someone who would be the alpha dog that we desperately need.  The refusal to use the athletes to get out and run and to revamp the offense is a giant black eye on the staff.  And for certain players to take steps back  in their development also earns the staff demerits.  After the way we've shown ourselves against two of the best teams in the conference and what we will likely show in game 3 against the other really good team, I would be shocked if we're not playing in the Friday night loser bowl in the conference tournament.  The New Year's Resolution for this staff had better be to take a long soul-searching look inside themselves and make some characteristic changes.  Otherwise, the cycle will never change and opponents will continue to brush us aside like what we've seen these last 2 games.

We hardly agree, but this a good post.  We've never had that alpha (except Benimon) and a willing and unselfish passer.

I think you meant UNCW not JMU. Dukes have some good players that are better than we have. They just have an equally incompetent coach, who will probably be canned after this year.

Do we need to print "fire the coach" t-shirts and stand at the games with a paper bag over our heads to get some change around here?

I’m down to pass them out bags for the next game.

Someone mentioned  the other day about finding dirt on skerry. Man if 2011/2012 was 2019 his words and actions would have led him to the door already ...

We’re up by 12 early in the 2nd half, only to be out scored 47-27 the remainder of the 2nd half. This team can’t play with a lead. Unfortunately, this team can’t play from behind either.

Gray & Timberlake with 22 points combined in the 1st half, and, wait for it ... ZERO combined points in the 2nd half. How is that conceivable?

Our “best” player has 15 points total in our 1st 2 conference games.

Tunstall with several wide open jumpers at the elbow, which he missed.

Thompson & Dottin combined for zero points.

It was a treat to see Nate Archibald in his prime though (KC-Omaha Kings-old school, the year he lead the league in scoring & assists). Oh wait, that was Buie from Hofstra, with 35 points today. Anyone think our PG problems are solved, please raise your hand. Dude just drained another 3 from the team bus

But hey, we did out rebound them!!

I would like to hear from anyone on this board who, notwithstanding the small sample size of 2 games, thinks our ceiling is higher than 6 conference wins.

If there’s a different coach and philosophy I’ll take the over on the 6!

Fire the coach! Gary Neal can be in charge from this point moving forward

He’s a grad assistant who is more worried about waiving to his friends and family in the stands. So he does nothing, which is basically what skerry does... so yeah, bring him on in!

  9. His career record post 11-12 mess is 119-114 and 67-59 in the watered down CAA   That’s a 51% and 53% winning percentage

Pat was hired in the spring of 2011 Since then there have been 17 other coaches in who have been at their school the same amount of time or longer without making the ncaa tournament. 336 programs have either made the tournament, canned their coach or left in that time frame.

    Those teams are:

    Toledo * #

    Sam Houston state * #

    Saint Francis NY * #

    UL Monroe #

    Hartford

    Sacramento St

    Houston Baptist College #

    Charleston southern * #

    UNH

    Boston university * #

    Eastern Michigan

    Texas A&M corpus Christi #

    Penn state

    Nebraska-Omaha #

    Monmouth * #

    Navy

    Northern Illinois

    * won regular season title at-least once

    # played in conf champ game at-least once

so that leaves 7 other coaches in all of D1 college hoops who are still employed at their school without making the conference title game or winning a regular season championship... words don’t even describe how mind boggling that is.  Add in idiot Leonard’s extension for Pat, I can almost guarantee he will be alone on that list in a year or so.

    FIRE PAT & TIM!

  10. And let me say this, I'm upset we lost, but not surprised as NE is a good team and has a coach with more ability in his pinky than Pat does in his entire body. I'm angry that we got blown out and showed zero effort and intensity.  This is a supposed deep team, that had played twice in 17 days, with minimal travel and got Christmas off, the lack of effort and execution is infuriating.

Too early to determine where we will finish in the conference based on one game, but yes Saturday's performance was highly disappointing. If Skerry and the players don't come out ready to play at a high level today against Hofstra I will join the negativity, but let's see what today brings before calling the season over. We knew this was a tough schedule to start conference play, but we are at home and I was hoping to be able to win at least one of these games to get off on the right foot in conference play.

All conference games are tough, with the exception of UNCW and Elon this year. Getting curb-stomped by a conference opponent that is around your level, at home, is embarrassing and unacceptable

Could not agree more with the majority of the comments on this topic.  I gave up on Skerry about 2 years ago.  He is what he is as a coach......he's not going to improve anymore as a recruiter or as a player-developer.  I'm done critiquing his shortcomings, as they are many.

I am, however, going to start turning my attention to our Athletic Director.  Tim Leonard strikes me as an absentee AD who has fallen asleep at the wheel.

I would love to hear/see/read an interview with Tim Leonard where he addresses the current state of TU athletics.  I would love to hear him answer specific questions regarding the direction of the men's basketball team and football team.  I would love to know how he personally defines "success" for these programs and what he considers his responsibility in achieving that success.

I have never met the guy.  He may be the nicest guy of the highest integrity, which is fantastic......however, I get the impression that the guy is far too comfortable with mediocrity and the status quo.  Kinda feel like he's very content putting his feet up on his desk and collecting a nice paycheck while just watching the teams spin their wheels.  "Ambitious", "hungry", "relentless" are NOT words I would use to describe Tim Leonard.

For those of you who do know him, please tell me if I am way off base with my observations and instincts.

I've met Time a few times, quick chats here and there, along with his better half. They are both very nice.  Unfortunately nice doesn't win games or raise money.  He obviously isn't happy with losing, and I'm sure is doing what he thinks is best, but he seems to be in over his head.  How it looks as though he defines success is; just having D1 programs (which alot of people on here are just happy with too), graduating student athletes (which is obvious) and stability among coaching staffs.  There have not been many changes among coaches since hes been here. I feel as though everyone, regardless of success, tenure, and position are just alittle to comfortable.

He's a nice guy who I wouldn't mind watching a game with, however he doesn't have the killer instinct to lead a winning athletic dept.

I agree pressing needs to happen more and not these show pressure, back off as soon as they make one pass type presses. Need to be create havoc type presses.

Anyone think maybe that these guys aren’t selfish before getting into this system and the system just makes them start playing selfishly? Also it’s skerry day job to shut down selfishness in practice so it doesn’t translate to them games. I don’t think Gibson is naturally a selfish player but even he’s has fallen into the system of selfishness a little.

As for the recruits and recruiting, I agree he recruits the same type of guys and I don’t like it either, but I think the woes on offense are scheme and coaching related more than recruit related. Fobbs has regressed offensively and Gibson hasn’t played to his potential. No reason these guys shouldn’t be getting better other than coaching and creating mental toughness

Will be at the game Monday to and will probably be the only two games I get to make this year. Praying that this one is a better showing then the other.....

Sorry man. Hofstra is much better and athletic than Ne. They don’t play defense and aren’t deep (same as ne). Honestly don’t expect it to be close 78-60 score range.  Then again pat skerry and Towson Athletics And consistently inconsistent.

where to begin....TSU88 and others have said it well, but i hate our style of offense (there is none).  In the comments, Skerry lamented the ball movement, but he does not recruit players that share the ball.  Outside of Jerome Hairston he has not landed a single guard that can break down a defense and share the ball.  Others have posted - have we ever finished in the TOP HALF of the CAA in assists under Skerry's tenure?  And Skerry set all types of assist records at Tufts....I just don't get it....

I absolutely hate his stubbornness.  A few examples:

    - Recruiting athletes:  We landed a 3 star recruit that is a sick athlete in next years class.  How about getting scorers.  The other two guys in the class seem really suspect.  Next year when Fobbs leaves we will be picked dead last in the CAA.  Who will score for us?   And then Skerry will give that dumb canned comment, "we trust our own eyes" as he continues to recruit folks that fit his mold.  Did he try to land Jarious Lyles when he left VCU to go to UMBC?  What a tremendous scorer he was.....Would Skerry have pursued Gary Neal?  Or does he not guard and rebound enough for Skerry?  How can he not see that his "style" is not working?  How about Usher a few years back that ended up at UD.  Was he not strong enough for Skerry?  Having complimentary players works, but having 12 guys with similar limited skill sets is a recipe for failure.

    - Not leveraging the skills of the athletes:  So we have guys who are strong, fast and can leap.  Yet we don't utilize their sklll set.  We lost to Buffalo as they pressed us relentlessly the last 2 minutes.  Why can't we EVER do that to another team?  We have the athletes and depth to do it.  Instead we run this dysfunctional offense where it simply doesn't matter much if you can run fast or jump high in our half court sets....

    - Hang up on toughness and strength:  I'm convinced that Skerry's hang up on being strong and tough messes with guys shots.  Gray is skinny.  Is Skerry messing up his shot by trying to make him into a linebacker?  Gray was an outstanding shooter at USD, why is he going bust with us?  We said this last year, but give me a few 98 pound weaklings that can score.  I think the reason that Gray is suffering is that we run that stagnant offense, without players that have a track record of sharing the ball, and no guard that can break down a defense, so Gray is not left open.  We had a similar issue with Four McGlynn.

Matt- I realize you shouldn't burn a bridge with Pat, but can someone with press credentials ask him when we will have a team that prioritizes assists and shooting?  Next year's recruiting class is AGAIN a major whiff in these categories.  What good will it do to change the lineup and bench Sanders?  Replace him w the offensively challenged (but strong and hard working, Skerry's only priorities) Thompson?

It would be wise of Skerry to bank much of his existing salary as he will be unemployable once his contract runs out unless he changes his ways.

    1
    !

What do you want to do?! It’s not pats fault!

We have never finished better than 8-9th in assists. Bad offense and style. Bad passers selfish players and bad scorers. Doesn’t bode well for trying to collect assists. We don’t even bully Teams and get offensive boards and to the ft like anymore

The caa is and has been bad since he took over and he still can’t win. Didn’t do it with 2 time POTY. no one will ask him questions before no one frankly cares.  Any other caa school this man woulda been axed already.  45 fuc*ing points at home! It’s embarrassing. 5-7 record. Soon to be 5-9.  Skerry needs to go

    https://towsontigers.com/news/2019/12/28/mens-basketball-betrand-leads-towson-in-caa-opener.aspx

There's no Good, Bad, and Ugly. Only Ugly. Horrific shooting performance. Defense wasn't bad when you hold Roland to 14 points and 0-5 from 3pt. Got outrebounded by 8 against a team with no starter taller than 6-6. Had just four offensive rebounds. How the eff is that possible when you miss so many shots?

Don't like the early sub patterns. Why sub out four players two minutes into the game when it's 6-6? How do you get any flow? With Sanders being the only low-post threat, this team has no chance when he puts up games like he had today. He actually played a much better game against Florida and Blackshear, the 6-10 Va. Tech transfer. Smaller guys? They seem to bother him because they don't go for his lower the shoulder spin moves. Of course, he missed 2-3 layups. Dottin had one near the up and shot an air ball. Passing? Sanders leads the team with three assists. When he's your best passer, you're in trouble. Guard play was a mess. 15 turnovers against a team that plays solid defense, but they don't press. Most of the turnovers were self-inflicted. Ugly.

    Comments coming up.

We had 2 offensive board on the first possession. Zero effort and intensity.  Give coen 8 days in prep for a skerry coaches team isnt fair. Ones a coach the other pretends to be one. Getting blown out at home by an average undermanned team is embarrassing.

So many turnovers. Defense overrates (what else is new). Can’t finish with contact. This team is a paper tiger and soft like usual. Sanders blowing that wide open layup and not running back would be grounds for benching for the rest of that game. Skerry and this team is a joke
