Barstool might not be the best place to go to promote the institution...but whatevs. I don’t mind trying to win, but I think we’ve demonstrated that, in rare circumstances only, does winning really matter that much. All that being said I’m helping recruit someone today.

I'm not saying it's the best course. But unofficially if they were to mention that there's a game, and who they are playing, etc it wouldn't hurt. I might be generalizing, but isn't their following mostly young fratty guys who are into sports? If so, that would be a target demo to get butts into seats/more interest in the program.

No it’s not. It’s a monumental challenge but you’re comparing us to a terrible FBS team. They would beat them worse than Penn State did.

You're missing what I'm saying.. To Runda who says its "Dumb."  Playing a dynasty and the best team by far at your level in a home non-conference game is huge.  Maryland does not get those type of non conference games at home, (Texas at FedEx), I'm saying that this is a very good opportunity for us.

2012 might bitch and complain a lot but dude puts his money where his mouth is. Season tickets to basketball and football every year and gives back to athletics. Hope the horse is doing the same after he graduated.

I'm an asshole who likes to complain, but I'm an asshole who likes to complain and wants desperately for TU athletics and the University to succeed.

Back on the topic of what can be done better... I noticed on Twitter that JMU has a barstool sports page (sports is used lightly now, I know) and they were trash talking with Monmouth's one before the playoff game last week. Looking at the page, it seems they are really into promoting the schools sports programs, whereas ours doesn't. Maybe someone can reach out and try to improve ours? Having an unofficial TU athletics fan's twitter wouldn't be a bad idea either, IMO.

  4. NDSU is a machine and it's going to take a lot to keep it close. Saw them in person, when we made the championship, and was really impressed how much better they were. They are on their 3rd coach in the dynasty and it just keeps on moving. They are FCS in name only. Gonna be a huge test for us, but something the players and staff should look forward to.  This is the equivalent of Alabama or Clemson going to college park for a non-conf game.

Interestingly enough they actually have not played an FBS school since beating Iowa State 34-14 in 2014. FBS schools probably got sick of losing to them. They are at Oregon to start the season next year but are slated to play Towson, Albany, and Valpo in 2021. Of course, we also have San Diego State in 2021. I don't know how the CAA schedule shakes out that year, but if we play James Madison that will be an absolutely hellacious schedule. This is exciting. There is no excuse for this game not to be close to a sellout, especially considering they will probably bring at least 1,000 fans. I know they are not a brand name, but we should at least be able to hype up the concept of this game to get close to filling the place.

It's going to be a rough stretch and hopefully we are breaking in a new coach. They will probably bring around 2,000 (again depending on how well they finish this year and next). Maybe we can package it around a parents weekend and get 8K there.

When Spiro told me about that at the Florida basketball game, my jaw dropped. That’s a really nice marriage and it shows NDSU isn’t scared one bit about taking on a tough game on the road.  Given their history vs 1-A teams, I’m not surprised they’d do it.

NDSU has trouble scheduling FBS games. No one wants to play them, so they have to go this route. They did a H and H with Delaware and Weber and JMU are doing one as well.  This is good for the CAA as the conference is not close to what it used to be.  The need for better games is apparent as east coast leagues, NEC, Patriot, MEAC, are not good.

So what would be your solution? I know that Skerry does a lot for the community and for Towson as a whole, along with turning the hoops program at Towson around COMPLETELY. Let’s just get another coach. Another coach who doesn’t care about Towson and uses us as a platform to a better opportunity. Maybe on the way up he can bring some 2 1/2 star recruits (as opposed to 2 stars) and win is an extra 4 games or so! Fair enough. To each his own I suppose.

Let’s return Towson to its former athletic glory. Gary Neal’s team had a good offensive system and some post season success, right?

I've always said that Pat is a great guy, and person. He has done a lot of the community and helped a program get out of the dump. To say he has COMPLETELY TURNED the program around is not true. That would have meant he made the NCAA tournament, or even the CAA final. Hell, most on here would settle for a win in the F'ing CAA Tournament.  He did a great job and took the program as far as he could. He has become stagnant and stale (just look at football too).  Most coaches do not stick around for a decade + at this level. Why do you think that is? They either win and move on, or are fired for performance.

There is nothing wrong with wanting more and to be better (no RKW we do not want to be Duke or Alabama). No one is expecting a sweet 16 appearance and back to back NCAA's, but after a decade in charge, the best you can muster up is a CAA semi-finals trip, with the 2 time CAA POTY and a home advantage in the tournament?? That's disappointing to say the leas.  We took a giant step under Pat, and definitely seems like he can't get us over the hump. A new, younger coach would be hungrier, and the players would probably be more responsive to him. He could give two shits about Towson, if he takes us to the NCAA and moves on to a better/higher paying job, I'd be ecstatic.

Since Pat took over, EVERY team in the CAA except Elon (who joined the conference in 14-15) has made the CAA Final.

    Drexel

    VCU

    NE x4

    JMU

    Delaware

    WM x2

    Hofstra x2

    UNCW x2

    Charleston x2

Drexel has since canned their coach. Delaware and JMU who both won the CAA fired their coaches a few years after. WM and Elon fired theirs for not making the NCAA's. UNCW's left for NC State.

Pat is the second longest tenured coach in the conference.

It’s hard to take comments in a post seriously when it contains a belief that TU had some postseason success during Gary Neal’s playing days. In fact, we went a combined 27-33 in Neal’s two seasons, with no postseason appearances

I believe he was being sarcastic.

I can’t help feel like the expectations are somewhat high for people at Towson. Yes we are D1, and yes we have a chance at making the tourney. But I think we have to be realistic when it comes to Towson Basketball.

While the CAA is a higher end mid major. But we are on the low side of it. Meaning that all good players who come here are using us as trampolines to go power 5, or head cases that power 5s don’t want to deal with (see Benimon). People rarely pronounce “Towson” correctly, but you expect us to attract star recruits that have multifaceted games. If they could do that, they wouldn’t be at Towson.

Second off, do we need a coaching change? While we do need a change of pace offensively, you can’t deny that Skerry has a solid defensive gameplay night in and night out. However, his offensive scheme is atrocious. A change in offensive scheme, (More Princeton Offense, Launch and Board) is the only way Towson is going to be successful. Maybe try handing an assistant coach more of the offensive scheme? Do you guys think Skerry would take a demotion to an assistant coach that specializes in defense haha?

So because people can't pronounce the university's name, we shouldn't be good at hoops? Uh.. Part of the reason no one can pronounce the name correctly is because we are stuck playing crappy local teams that offer NOTHING to us.

CAA is not a high end mid major anymore... We are in the middle of the pack, not the tail end.  So we should be realistic and just accept the fact that 16 wins is our ceiling, with a coach who has been here a decade and makes a good sum of money??? SHEESH

  9. "24-3 against in state opponents" since 2012-13! Take that Goucher, Frostburg State, St. Marys, Coppin, Morgan and Loyola! "Kings of Baltimore!" Something to be proud of! Who needs the CAA title?!

But seriously, the SID, who not only composes weirdly written write ups for reviews and lead up stories, does't check facts.  Losses to UMBC, Loyola, UMD and Morgan.. that is 4

Look, let’s be honest-if Fobbs doesn’t go off last night, we lose at home to a team playing without their top scorer (were they missing another key player as well?)

Point is, Fobbs ain’t going to score 30+ every game, which begs the bquestion of where are the points going to come from on those nights when he only scores 15 points? Based on how things are trending, it  better be Betrand & Sanders because Gibson has gone 3 straight games without scoring a single point, Timberlake looks awful (sorry, but the numbers don’t lie), Thompson is probably good for 4ppg, Tunstall maybe 8 or so, Dottin maybe 5-6. That leaves Gray, who seems to run hot and cold. I doubt we can expect him to average more than 10ppg, at best.

SHHH... don't question Pat's greatness... We won! Be happy! Who cares if it was a team with a 2-5 record. They were missing a guy who averaged 10 and 9 PPG the last two years and 6 and 5 on the boards. He is also there best defender and would likely have been on Brian.

Brian Fobbs > James Harden; lol ..... what a game!!!!     seems to be a long break now, any idea why?  and how did Liberty end up on the schedule, seems random? (they seem to be pretty good, havent lost yet).  Bummed out Timberlake hasn't broke out yet (feel like he should/could be 10pts a game????? ) but pumped Fobbs got rolling.....

Exams. But palying 3 games in 25 days isn't ideal, thanks Cornell! Not sure why you think Liberty is random? They are a semi-Mid Major (school pumping tons of money into athletics) local program. They are good and that one could be very ugly

  11. Good- We won a close game that really could have went either way. Nice for them to finally close one out.

    -Brian played a great game

-Sanders played a great game and showed intensity and passion (something lacking from Towson for a while)

-Dottin played well and showed intensity- Thought he played some good defense

-Switched defenses which atleast slowed them down a bit

Bad- We needed all 40 minutes to put away a bad team at home, without two of their best players.

-The bench. Need way more production from role players, especially at home

    -FT shooting, sans Fobbs

-#2 sulking most of the game (I see the JG and ZM frustration brewing in him)

Ugly- Our guys getting worked by the UMBC "bigs" YIKES

-The late game fouls (Dennis is a 5th year senior and should know better!) and that turnover with 14 seconds left!

Roy would only play a school like UNCW if the assistant was a former Tar Heel player or coach. Some coaches will do that; others won’t like Turgeon. Why? Because Turgeon is already under fire and has nothing to gain. Roy has rings. He can pretty much do what he wants. Turgeon didn’t even schedule a road game in non-conference play. Get another coach there and maybe he feels differently. Like Gary Williams, who at least would play Towson in Baltimore until Truax got fired.

I don’t think Maryland has ever played a local Baltimore team in the road as long as they all went D1.

UNC also played at Wofford (a year after losing at home to them, and not just skipping the return game) and Davidson in recent years. Penn State played at Duquense.  Understand that Maryland as they are a bubble NCAA team typically wouldnt want to play a road game.

Why would the Twerps or GTown have any interest in helping an area school?  They’re not falling over themselves to go to Mason, GW, or American either.  It’s all in the coach’s scheduling philosophy.  Roy isn’t afraid.  Bobby Hurley isn’t afraid.  Turgeon and Ewing seem like they have the old-school mentality of only playing a road game if the conference schedules it or it’s part of some ‘challenge’.

For the same reason state FBS schools should bring in state FCS schools for paydays before bringing in out of staters. All part of the same university system.

How is that working for the two programs?

The best chance to get a big name into SECU was when it opened.  Who did we play in the first game?  Navy.  Thank the midshipman for being the future protectors of our country but not the headliner to open up a new building.

We were 5-59 combined prior to the 18-13 season before it opened. Getting anyone big would have been difficult, especially with the whiny turtles down in PG county.  UNC helped Elon open their arena. UVA is helping JMU open theirs next season. South Carolina opened Charlestons new arena.

We should play the other locals.  You think Villanova likes the idea of having to play an Ivy, two below-average A-10 teams, and a who-knows-what-you-get Temple team every year?  For a while, Nova thumbed their nose at the rest of Philly and their rep in the city took a hit.  We don’t have a rep to take a hit on if we skipped out of the local scene but those games are still always tough tests to prepare for conference season.

On the rest of the OOC front, there has to be better effort to get someone with a name to SECU.  Look across the landscape and see all the power conference schools going to mid-majors.  NC has gone to Elon and UNCW the last two years.  Illinois went to Grand Canyon.  Arizona State went to Princeton ffs.  You have to likely schedule 2 (or 3) for 1s to make it happen but if you stagger the years, you can get a name team into SECU every year.  Even if that ‘major’ team is a Temple, VA Tech, Rutgers, Wake Forest, those guys are looking for a footing in the Baltimore recruiting market too and might have a strong interest in a trip.  But it’s annoying to see all the schools on par with us conference-wise get one marquee home game every year or every other year while the best we can do is a first-division MAC team.

I get what you are saying but it’s apples and oranges. 4 of those 5 teams have good histories.  A loss by nova to penn isn’t as embarrassing as a loss to umbc or Coppin. The Philly 5 are all repeatable programs that play in good conferences not the meac and America east.

Lsu went to Charleston. Michigan state went to ne. Nova played at Nassau coliseum  vs Hofstra. Duke played Elon in Greensboro and split the gate. Uva goes to jmu next year. Notre Dame went to Delaware. Some are old coaches and colleagues but pats been everywhere before Towson. You’d think we could get someone to do a 2 game trip to either a philly team or a dc team with us.  We won’t kill anyone’s rpi as we are an average team.
