There are reasons for the low attendance.  The administration needs to focus on this and can never give up because the program depends on it.  Theoretically if no one showed up the program would end as we know it.  The program at the 1-AA level and people's jobs depend on solving this problem.  And it is a real problem.

This may not be the entire reason however I have said this before and the level of overall just general harassment by the contracted parking lot security is just outrageous.  I brought someone this week to a Towson game for the first time and he just couldn't believe it.  His daughter goes to JMU so it was somewhat embarrassing to have a game this big and to have essentially no student attendance.  I was tailgating in Lot 13 and I estimate security engaged us at least 3 times.  No particular issues but just the overall starring, questioning and inquiry by the contracted security is just odd.  I went to a pro game the week before and you just don't experience anything like what someone experiences at Towson.  I have been consistently going to games at TU since 2005 and I can't recall a single incident in what would be thought of as the alumni lot during this entire time.  What in the world are they policing?  At one point I observed a security person coming over to a parked pickup and looking in the bed of the truck.  It was an empty bed, but just strange.

These contracted for security folks are not behaving like this without instruction and an overall policy from the administration.  It is hard enough to get fans to the game.  You just can't have such a harassing security presence, especially in the alumni lot and not make a negative impression to new fans.  It will not keep me away from going to the games but I can only imagine how the security comes down on the average student.  I would imagine many students made the cost benefit calculation that it simply is not worth risk tailgating at the game.

Agree fully.  the SAFE people are ridiculous.  They used to hound our tailgate in years past, 10-20 people with a tent, grill, cornhole, and beers.  We were all alumni and well over the age of 21.  I have been carded by the SAFE people numerous times, (ironic part is, I am the oldest of the group).

The school is wasting a ton of money on SAFE and the numerous parking attendants that literally lead you to a spot.  This wastes a ton of time and money as they can just direct you to whatever lot and you pick your own spot!  Slows down the entire process.

We've been talking about this randomly in other threads, figured I start one specially dedicated to attendance and ( lacking) game promotion.

Some topics to get us started:

    • Student attendance: very weak. Yes, I do think back to back to back home games and the late start to the home schedule let freshmen settled into college life without football.  However, even with giveaways and a ranked team (top 25 match up this past week) we can't seem to draw nearly as many students as in years past, even when we sucked. NO STUDENTS STOOD DURING EITHER GAME AND MADE ZERO NOISE. We need to get some student organization back involved. When I was in school it was T-Unit then came along Doc's Army... now???
    • Tailgating: Walked over to lot 13 & 14 during the home opener, it was just sad. What happened to the awesome tailgating in lot 14? Bad tailgating hurts student attendance as well. I know the school wants to be the morality police (Deb Moriarty in particular) but come on gotta let the kids be kids and enjoy something that is supposed to bring the college experience together. Lot 21 tailgating seems fine and basic (my spot is on that side). However, lot 21 could really be upped with an area set up to sell food and beer, saving the donors from having to bring everything. Also both tailgate sides should have a pop up team shop. The one places that is always popping during games is the team store, alumni want to buy stuff! SELL IT TO THEM.
    • Tickets: $50 for season tickets? So cheap and yet we can't seem to sell them? Not claiming to know an answer here.
    • Game promotions: Do they even promote game on campus? General question, I have no idea but when I was in school they had signage up all over game weeks, cheerleaders and players would hang out in the union giving out flyers. Regardless of that, to the general fan the athletics staff is really just following the generic game day promotions playbook. (Home opener, Pink Game, Parents Weekend, Homecoming, Senior Day) My high school had better themes. The only thing missing from the generic playbooks is hometown heroes and first responders (vomit) and if we had six home games I bet that would be it.
    • Food: I feel like the food has been the same for 15 years. Nothing healthy or fresh,  no grilled options (hot dogs are boiled), drinks are soda and Gatorade no tea or other limited sugar options. Why no bring third party brands? Boardwalk fires, chickfila, any pizza brand, etc.
    • Booze: Turtle on the track is a nice addition but it keeps people out of their seats. Just sell booze in the stands...its 2018... The food also sucks down there. Positive the beers are cheap!
    • Field House: Having it open during the game keeps people from going to their seats. Keep it open for bathrooms or whatever but encourage people back into the stadium
    • Sponsors: Do we have any good ones? Do we pay UA or do they pay us? Also WTF is New Day USA? Looks like a scam to me.

It's just mind boggling to me an athletics department connected to a school with a large business program and marketing department (which I am a graduate from) can't seem to understand the basics of generating awareness and interest. Run an internship program??? Having radio/prints/tv ads is a massive waste of money and not relevant in driving interest in 2018. We are stuck looking like clowns with a half full stadium on game day with a 1990's playbook on how to address 2018 sports entertainment.

Call up DC United, Ted Leonsis and ask/beg them for some basic tips. My only ask is to not get cheap and call Dan Synder. Free advice just don't do whatever it is we are doing and whatever it is dan synder would do.

    two words... Mike Waddell.

But seriously the marketing is awful and has no creativity.  food options to improve would be nice, along with hoops games.

, our attendance sucks so why would sponsors want to advertise?

  3. "it doesn't matter, it will all be ok."

Just waiting for a 6-5 team to get in over us if we go 7-4, because they started the season in the top 10.

Sh*t even URI is ahead of us and their results/schedule are comparable at best. Just wish we got alittle more respect nationally.

We're picked 8th on the busting brackets website.  Decent detail into every team, but no way Northeastern finishes behind  the Cougars and Flying Dutchmen.

    https://bustingbrackets.com/2018/09/21/caa-basketball-2018-19-preseason-power-rankings/

Agree good write up.  and no way Elon finishes 10th (also go Phoenix and beat the crap out of UNH Saturday)

    Based off what is returning:

    1. NE..best player best coach

    2. C of C..second and fourth best players and a ton of bigs

    3. WM..5th best player and can score with anyone in the country

    4. Hostra..2nd best player, JM is keeping them from going higher

    5. UNCW..Cacok is a beast and they came on late last year, dark horse CAA team

    6. JMU..lots of good young players, can Rowe coach?

    7. Elon..solid senior players in their last hoorah, new arena

    8. Towson..no team lost more than us. build for the future, lots of exciting new and young parts

    9. Delaware..higher if daly stayed, still some decent young talent returning.

    10. Drexel..poor little kurk lee

  5. haven't had a crowd over 7,000 since opener in 2016.  Unless the students show up, 5K or more, I dont see us getting close to it.  The ticketmaster seating chart shows most sections have 80% or more seats available. I hope I am wrong, being the home opener and nice weather!

  6. Checkinng in our opponents:

Nova wins again. They have allowed 33 points total in games not played against us

morgan state beats a top 5 nc a and t team (who beat Jax state and ecu kn the road) in nc.

Wake loses at home to top 10 Notre Dame by 4 scores

citadel wins at Mercer. Our run d has been solid this year and they run the triples option, but they scare me with a couple of throws with an undisciplined defense of we are flat footed

Dropped 62 spots after a road win over a top 15 team..  there are 125 teams OK

  8. LOL.  We don't have name recognition like other programs do.  I mean last week UNH was ranked about 28th at 0-2 with losses to Maine and Colgate. (they will still make the playoffs)

And yes they didnt want to move us up.

Fun fact, the last time nova gave up 40+ to an fcs team?  Towson in 2012

Agree it will likely be closer to 1/2 million mark for a mid season SEC game. That seems to be the general going rate but hopefully even higher.

Do we keep track of our payout game amounts someplace? My buddy that I watched the Wake game with, and went to Wake, was asking how much we got paid for the game. I personally am a fan of the payout games; it really helps fund the department and it's nice to say "hey, you paid us to be here" while seeing the our boys in larger/historic stadiums.

Same.  I think we get a little less by not playing the Alabama's, VA Techs, PSU's of the world, but that is fine with me.  Would like to see more middling local FBS teams, UVA, Rutgers, Temple, etc.  But that is difficult because these are scheduled so far in advance.

  10. This is a big game if this team wants to finish above 500 on the season, especially with the last 3 games on our schedule. Bednarcyzk always kills us as did Robertson before him..  Unfortunately his accuracy in the short passes and our serious inability to get any pressure on QB's is not a good recipe.

We should have beaten East Carolina that year but lost Flaherty, our starting center at the half and couldn't run the ball after that. But UConn was by far the worst team we faced. Tough to judge what we faced in the early years of playing FBS teams because we were just physically overmatched.

Agree. Was at both games and UCONN was BAD. They also were terribly coached as well. ECU was slightly better and had a much more intimidating atmosphere.

Clawson is a good coach and Wake has been solid the past couple of seasons
