Trivia question: What team did Troy State beat in the 1984 Division II semifinals en route to a national championship (referenced in the ESPN piece)? That would be us. They thrashed our Kurt Beathard/Sean Murphy-led team (which had beat Norfolk State in the first round. (Only eight teams got into the tournament back then. The year before, we were loaded but lost in the first round, 24-17, to ... the Bi-zun of North Dakota State.)

we had to play that NDSU game on the road b/c we didn't have large enough crowds (were higher ranked going into the game). They played outside then and it was apparently freezing.

True but Drexel and NE are in the city, not 10 minutes out. The key to success other than success on the court is to one day, get the students to the games. Every game when the students are on campus (not including minimester), in football and basketball (maybe lax when the weather gets warm in late March, early April) is to give away something special to get the students to come. X-box, free books, free food from local establishment or super market. Have to bribe them to come. Maybe improved halftime shows. Free stuff when a team goal is reached like 75 points or holds a team under 40% shooting or blocks 10 shots.

Mat, we've been around long enough to know that none of that works even if it does for a minute. I love this place, watching my students do well, but eventually we gotta own up to the fact that we could have kept the Towson Center, upgraded it for the original $5mil it was gonna cost and saved the rest of the students money since Gary Neale's squad in 06 outdrew most of the SECU teams. That being written this team is kind of fun for being so unsuccessful most of the time.

  3. Some of these questions, while funny/important, can't be answered by Rob. The athletic department and institution have to work deals with Black and Gold, liquor licensure, current sponsors, and so on.

TV deal is out of Rob's realm of responsibility that's on the AD and his Assistants, plus the Commissioner of the CAA.

Europe was done on the cheap, and, from an athletics standpoint, since this is Towson we've gotta do it before other schools start to. Not saying it was perfect, but I know of many other ways this school blows a couple grand to return less than what Gus did. Plus it got covered by some national news organizations (not trying to overestimate the ROI on the trip, but it is a positive story on Towson). Will it bring in new recruits? Maybe, you know how this trip literally pays for itself several times over? If some non-athlete in Europe comes and pays full sticker price to attend this school as an international student, simply because (s)he saw Gus with his TU gear and they heard of a school they never had before. The institution can then use that result to show that "we are more diverse than ever" and boast about how we are drawing more international students here. The endgame of this trip is bigger than football is what I'm saying.

My questions regarding football are what's the deal with the O-line? Not only losing a couple starters but possibly 3 of the smartest players the team has had from an educational standpoint in years (Zane and Nico are actually doing and presenting academic research at regional and national conferences).

What are the plans with the new transfer we got from USC?

2017-18: we made the 2nd fewest 3’s in the conference

2016-17: we made the fewest 3’s

    2015-16: we made the 3rd fewest 3’s

2014-15: we made the fewest 3’s

We are who I thought we are. Can’t win like this. Does Skerry not grasp this, or is it that he’s unwilling to adapt, or unable to recruit the type of players needed? Those are the only possiblities & none of them are acceptable answers.

so what you're saying is that we have like the 2000th best 3-point shooters between the ages of 17-24 in the country?

  5. Mat, it has been a long road but I do appreciate the work you do, and had a blast following this year's team. As a Brewers fan I have learned to enjoy the journey more than any end destination that it may bring. Hopefully next year's is longer than this one.

Every effort needs to be made to fill the place. Giving away tickets to Pop Warner teams and other junior programs could be a good community outreach as well as filling the place.

That's the rub though this is an NCAA event not a Towson event. The only reason we sold out in 2011 was that we had Waddell convince a lame duck interim-prez to subsidize the tickets to students through the SGA. So if Towson gave the tix away then they would technically owe the NCAA.

Next week's CAA schedule of importance to us:

    Elon (6-3, 4-2) at Maine (7-3, 6-1)

    Villanova at Delaware (7-3, 5-2)

Stony Brook (7-3, 5-2) at Albany

    JMU (7-3, 5-2) at Towson (7-3, 5-2)

If we win, we're in.  That's a lock.  If we lose, I think we need a Maine win to feel okay.  If we can get a Maine win and an Albany win, that would be tremendous but a Maine win and 1 of a Nova win and/or Albany win might be good enough.  Might be.

But the good news is that we can still control our own situation.  If we hadn't spit up Delaware and Maine, we'd already be hanging a banner.

The best part of all of this is that it's not like the teams we are hoping to hop if things go wrong draw better than us. Maybe the committee will actually look at merit this time around.

Damn took our 4 year old out to dinner for her birthday tonight and didn't expect this. What a win! Finally get to go to a game this year next week, and am looking forward to it. And leave Nico and that line alone haha. He's the smartest person to walk into my classroom maybe ever in 12 years.

Look Flacco deserves most of the credit but you have to give the OL some kudos as well. Garnett at left tackle. He's been steady. Very few mistakes and keeps getting better. Should have started last season. Rusolillo at center instead of guard has changed the line. We're still not as dominant as the unit in 2011-13 but they also used fullbacks. For whatever reason, we still are in the Pistol inside the 5. The best play is a Flacco run. I'd like to think that should be Yeedee most of the time. Shane did have a nice strong run for the first TD. Yeedee had one great run and did very little in his other attempts. It's almost like he wants to hit a home run with every carry. Needs to use that strength to get 3-4 yards and go North-South more.

But it's hard to nitpick when you score 56 points. We're just looking at the upcoming schedule. But let's not forget we put over 50 on one of the best defenses in the CAA in Stony Brook.

Nico is the smartest OL we've had in a long, long time. Him at center is huge.

  10. Actually if you check our media guide Morgan State games have historically drawn some of our biggest crowds post-Unitas expansion (10k+ in 2011), it drew the biggest crowd ever at Unitas prior to its expansion (I think mid-80s) so we should keep playing them. I mean we’ve only ever filled 11909 one time and that was when we had a lame-duck interim prez who let the SGA subsidize tickets for our first FCS home playoff game. Two years later we drew like 4850 when we began our run to the title (to be kinda fair it was around thanksgiving).

Regardless no fbs school is coming here, no good fcs team is going to travel here, and we are at the whim of who the CAA decides to have come here. So talent level and opponents aren’t a flexible thing. Maintaining the Baltimore rivalry has historical precedent, and, beyond that there’s little that can be done.
