I’m no Skerry apologist, but in all fairness 2012, we have to allow for the possibility that Skerry genuinely believes in the concept of lifting young guys like Betrand out of the hard scrabble environments they come from & getting them a college degree. I mean Skerry ain’t exactly running an outlaw program, a la Tark the Shark.

My beef is that this altruistic motive of Skerry’s has resulted in multiple players (Hairston, Foster, Betrand) having run ins with the law, and has resulted in others (Morman, Ingram, Martin) quitting, transferring or getting booted out. That’s 6 guys in 9 years. Hell, if you’re going to recruit kids with the potential to go off the tracks, at least win. Skerry however has brought in problem children and hasn’t won (at least not when it most counts, in the conference tournament). That’s not a good combo

For those upset about the departure of Betrand, perhaps this pic (from Jones’ Instagram page) will make you feel a little better.

You can’t help but be a little excited about this kid’s athleticism

And he posted a pic of him in a TU uni, which, given recent events, is encouraging to see

Interesting. Will contain my optimism for now...

I can't even imagine being a women's or men's lacrosse player, a gymnast, a baseball or softball player, who didn't even get to complete their seasons. At least the fall sports were well over and the winter sports either over or about to be.

I'm not sure there is a lesson learned other than to live life one day at a time and at it's fullest. You just never know when doing the thing you love might be taken away from you. I deserve no sympathy or pity for not covering some of those sports or being involved in the daily routine of having a job that depends on sports. It hurts the people that are younger journalists, reliant on these athletic events to make a living. Same with those who work at the events who need the extra paycheck or those who work in athletic departments.

So no NCAA men's or women's basketball Tournament. No MLax or WLax tourny or Final Four on Memorial Day, which had become one of the great traditions for the so-called Olympic sports. No College baseball World Series or for Softball. It's over.

My salute is to the young athletes who ended their careers and are moving on. We won't even have an awards banquet because there are no students on campus. Maybe we'll do something here because we don't have much to talk about until late July, early August. But we'd have to probably ignore the spring sports athletes, who didn't have enough time to be included.

For example, the women's basketball season was the ultimate rollercoaster. Maybe they could have turned it around in the CAA Tournament, maybe not. But I'm sure those seniors, who did accomplish a great thing last year, would love to have played this season again if they had known how this would turn out. Can't take anything for granted. Take games off and well, you end up being mediocre instead of really good.

All we can do is wait, hope, and pray that this nightmare will end shortly either due to the caution we're showing or a quick vaccine arrives. Until then, I salute the Towson athletes whose careers ended abruptly or had their season cut short. I can't imagine how it must have felt to have all that time put into one sport and have it taken away due to a pandemic.

BTW, not making a political statement and I don't want to turn this thread into one. I've tried to keep the board away from that and make it strictly a discussion of Towson sports with no politics or religion. I think a lot of people are hurting right now for various reasons. Just want to show that we're more than about critiquing, analyzing and rooting.

    Go Tigers.

    Well said..

  5. Lots of optimism here which is good. However everyone else will be playing their A game and I wouldn't be surprised if we're sent home early by NE due to defensive lapses and other mental lapses during the game. Hope I'm wrong but I can't see us winning it all. I would be happy with a win on Saturday. Good improvement during the past few games at least...

I think the biggest thing to come out of this season is that we finally found a point guard. If you've only watched certain games this season, maybe the ones not on Flo Sports, it's tough to judge how good and how much progress Jason Gibson has made. From going scoreless in three straight games against Vermont, UMBC and Morgan State, to looking overmatched against Florida, Xavier and Buffalo to becoming a very competent starter.

He had back-to-back turnovers tonight. That was rare and he was justifiably pulled for 3-4 minutes. Then he came back and responded well to help the Tigers win the game going 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Do you know how many turnovers he had aside from those two turnovers in the second half? None.  Do you know how many turnovers he has in his last seven games? He has five. Do you know how many turnovers Tobias Howard had as the starting point guard last season? He had 74 to go along with 80 assists. Jakigh Dottin actually did a much better job taking care of the ball last year (60 assists, 34 turnovers) when he started in half the games. This year, he has 67 assists and 29 turnovers. while Gibson has 67 assists and 42 turnovers in about 8 more minutes per game.

Bottom line is that point guard play has been much better. Gibson's three-point shooting is up to 36.4% overall and 41% in conference play. Also shooting 89% from the line. While he's not a threat to make the All-Defensive team, his defense has become dramatically better since the start of the season.

He was a very good HS player and held his own against Virginia recruit Casey Morsell (Mike's brother) in high school. But he wasn't heavily recruited and we're fortunate he's with us. Too small, too thin, not athletic enough, slow release on his shot? All I know is that this kid plays with a chip on his shoulder and gives us hope for the future with his poise, instincts and guts.

Yep. Think point guard play has improved immensely with Gibson and the offense has flowed better. Kudos to Skerry for finally stepping outside of his comfort zone and recruiting a pure PG for a change. The game was back and forth and honestly if NE had hit their open shots early (including the last defensive debacle where the guy was open for a wide open 3 to tie) we would have lost probably. The next game will be a toss up and could see us losing if defense doesn't improve...

  7. Good win. Wondering if Hofstra didn't put everything out there since they were in a good spot anyway. Arena is in a bad area but heard there are plenty of cops around there. Was thinking about making the short drive there. If you don't go looking for trouble you should be ok.. lol

Yes, more is needed. I doubt 1,200 students on campus know the AD's name let alone what he looks like. A for effort though...

Right, like who is this guy? Good effort at marketing though. From the pic, looks like he's already bald wearing a toupee. lol

So if the regular season is an exhibition and you don’t care about the winning, why did you get so upset over the three-game losing streak to start conference fake play?

Don't think he said he never cared about winning. Also he said the team has a chance of succeeding in the tourney this year due to recent play. The win was fine but the CAA is not a stellar conference but this might be our best chance to advance in the tourney which is what most are looking for. Wait and see approach...
