    UMass dominates MLax, 14-10

I like Monahan a lot. Not great speed but has excellent vision. Agree with you on Sunday as well. Sunday is not a good feeder, l but a good shooter and knows how to use his body. Ey has some speed and Sovero was their best middie last year. UMass's top 6 scorers return next year. We lose 3 of our top 5 plus Woodall and Goodrich. The transfer portal has me worried. I see Burke from Fairfield just transferred to Utah. He is a stud. Before this year high school or club coaches could call college coaches and tell them one of their former players is looking to transfer. Things could be in place for the transfer once the release was obtained. Now the recruiting opens up again once they are in the portal. I don't think the portal works to Towson's advantage.

    UMass dominates MLax, 14-10

Not to be arrogant but I posted that after watching on-line UMass vs Yale, a game in which Umass outplayed Yale I knew this was going to to be a tough one to win. What worried me was UMASS's Myers would give Woodall a tough time. We were also losing games when were were winning faceoffs like 24-5. Not a good sign. Woodall got the better of him but Myers was competitive. Maloof's shot selection has always been poor. He is pretty athletic but they have to reign him in. Umass was more explosive and quicker in the midfield. Expect everyone to shoot low on Canto after today. I agree with Quint but you have to add Goodrich into that equation. We have arguably the two of the best if not the best in the country at their positions (Woodall and Goodrich) and there is a chance we may not even make the CAA playoffs. I also like Koby Smith but the rest of the team is pedestrian. The entire offense really has a difficult time getting separation. Delaware and Drexel are going to be tough games.

    Comments after the Hofstra game

I attended the game and I thought I think I counted five straight possessions in the last five minutes where we turned the ball over without getting a shot off. I thought Sunday had a really poor game. He kept forcing passes to the middle turning it over. It looks like he is playing with no confidence. In fact I think we were 0-9 forcing the ball to the middle. Ey's speed was impressive and needed. Mo Silah also did some good things coming up with a big ground ball on the draw. It is great to get a kid from Landon. Is Sovero hurt? He was their best middie last year. Canto really struggled. The defense was struggling with ball screens in the first half, but played well in the second half. I likes switching to zone for a couple of possessions. Tierney is a really good attacker. Clock management was as bad as it gets. We didn't value the ball at all and we are so lucky to have Nads as a coach but yes I thought you could have called timeout when we were inexplicably driving to goal instead of using clock. Take the win. I think the conference is going to be very difficult. The way things are playing out I think we may have to win the conference to get in the dance.

What happened to Johnny Giuffreda? He was an athletic lefty junior attack last year. Just what we are missing this year

    Turnovers

I watched the game on my phone while at the Md State Basketball championships. Unfortunately I saw a combination of a lack of speed on our part and Duke's superior athleticism as the culprit on the clears in the the 4th quarter. Even Goodrich got caught from behind. It was frustrating to watch because Canto made some really good saves on long possessions only to see us turn it over on the clear. I think we have as good of coaching staff as any school in the country but I was saying to myself "call timeout" in a couple of the clear situations in the last few minutes trailing by 1 when it looked like we were in deep trouble clearing. A win yesterday would have gone a long way towards a NCAA berth for us. UMASS is playing exceptionally well. They are going to be tough to beat in conference.

As someone who has spent 36 years in the coaching profession at both the high school and collegiate level I completely agree with John Feinstein. Tony Shaver is a really good coach. John Feinstein @JFeinsteinBooks Replying to @D1scourse There IS no argument for a coaching change. Tony Shaver's an outstanding coach--and a better man. NO ARGUMENT

MLax is No.1 in all polls

Quint Kessinich's comments below: The Lords of Baltimore earned a 12-10 Wednesday night win over then-No. 1 Loyola to improve to 4-0. Brendan Sunday, Zach Goodrich, Alex Woodall, Koby Smith and Tyler Canto give coach Shawn Nadelen an elite player at every level. The Tigers were crisp early, jumping on top 4-1, and it could have been more had they not hit four pipes. Loyola couldn't handle Towson's dodgers and shifted into a zone defense, which was effective for 20 or so minutes. The Tigers were in a giving mood, committing seven second-quarter turnovers while struggling to clear against Loyola's 3-3 deep ride. The defense on Pat Spencer was adequate — what mattered most was that Loyola midfielders were held in check. The zebras didn't do Tigers any favors either. But Towson kept battling, and when Loyola tied the game, they had answers. It helps when your FOGO (Woodall) wins the last 10 draws of the evening, your goalie (Canto) is a gigantic brick wall, you have a defender (Smith) who at least gives you a chance against Spencer, and your top SSDM (Goodrich) destroys ball-carriers. Five fourth-quarter goals sealed the deal as the offense figured out the zone. The only thing missing was the Towson dancers at halftime.
  12. Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein · 6h Mike Rhoades. Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year. And it isn't even close. The Broad Street Bullies are back. Deal with it America. A few coaches from the MPSSAA and the Baltimore Catholic contacted then Towson AD Mike Waddell and suggested that he hire Mike Rhoades. We were told "he lacked experience, and we want to go with a proven recruiter. " Rhoades wanted the Towson job. The rest is history.

    More from the Loyola win

He redshirted his sophomore year but is listed as a senior. He would have one more year of eligibility but I would think by him being listed as a senior this would be his last year.

TOWSON 12, LOYOLA 10 (story up)

The new rule has made that call a very difficult one for the officials. I thought McClean was pushed into the goalie. The goal should have been allowed. I also thought the holding call on Spencer when he held the ball forever and we doubled him and stripped him at goal line extended was a really bad call. Matt spot on regarding Maloof's shot selection. His shot up two with a couple minutes left and 35 seconds on the shot clock was a really bad shot that resulted in a transition goal at the other end. He redeemed himself with a nice move with 90 seconds left. He made a nice doge and got the shot off that was saved which resulted in a fresh shot clock. B. McClean is good in tight space around the goal and can finish but his lack of foot speed in open space led to a couple of costly turnovers. I love the toughness of this team. Koby Smith and the low D are physical and athletic. Goodrich is a beast and O'Dare has impressed me.

TOWSON 12, LOYOLA 10 (story up)

Koby Smith did a great job on Spencer, our shorties of Goodrich and O'Dare were lock down, Monahan is playing like the All American he was at Gonzaga, Fromer is turning into a nice little playmaker that displays toughness (not afraid to turn the corner), Canto and Sunday were outstanding but it all starts with Woodall. Loyola couldn't guard us in man and when they switched to zone we struggled and went on the scoring drought. We struggled against zone a couple years a go at Fairfield. Role players like the California duo in Beachum and McClean also stepped up. Does anyone have the resume that we do with 3 top 20 wins this early in the season? We should garner some number 1 votes this week. Lastly I hope all Tiger fans appreciate what a great head coach and coaching staff we have.

Mlax crushes No. 7 JHU, 17-8

If Woodall can stay healthy this team has tremendous potential. We were playing make it take it most of the day. The defense was physical and manhandled Hopkins. Canto was solid in the goal. It is a . small sample size but so far Towson has adopted well to the shot clock. Our middies looked a step quicker than the Hopkins middies. A great team win. I think may have 3 UA All Americans while Hopkins probably has 25 UA All Americans on their squad. A great win.

That sounds like a step in the right direction. I am sure neither team was showing everything and players that will not play next week got reps but anytime you can play with UVA it is encouraging.

    Lax scrimmage update

Thanks for the update Matt. With the shot clock we are going to have higher scores this year. We had long possessions the last few years. Goodrich was hurt all last year. With Brennan out controlling the faceoff will be critical, although Stout had a good career at Loyola High School. Scoring 5 goals in the second qtr is encouraging. Any updates on any of the other injuries will be helpful.

Epic Collapse: What will Tim Leonard Do?

Agree play calling on the last two offensive plays and time management was brutal. Still the offense has scored 64 points in the last two games. The defense looks a step or two slow. You don't think a win at Elon give us a shot at the playoffs?

    MLax schedule is out

Interesting UMBC is no longer on the schedule. Great schedule but we have played UMBC for years.
  21. It looks like a good hire. I like the fact he was recruiting coordinator at Richmond https://www.insidelacrosse.com/article/assistant-coach-roundup-notre-dame-towson-penn-princeton-brown-holy-cross-umbc-binghamton/53071

    New lacrosse d-coordinator

No doubt Cocchi did a great job. Statistically we were one of the best defenses in the country for a significant period of time. It will be a loss but I like the fact that you hire someone that was a recruiting coordinator at a good program, and has experience as a d coordinator at a high level.

    CAA title game lax blog

I have to say there was virtually no promotion in comparison to football and basketball. Granted they are your big revenue sports but coming off a Final Foul appearance there was a lot to promote this year. Lacrosse has a very strong parent support group that has stepped up for the athletic department. It is time that Leonard, Crowley etc and his staff appreciate what they have.

That is very disappointing to hear. In my opinion far and away the university's most successful mens' coach.
