Today’s ugly loss to NDSU (story)

X’s & O’s, but you’ve got to have the Jimmy’s & Joe’s too. I’m not qualified to speak on whether or not he’s a good X’s & O’s guy, but, other than Benimon, he’s never had enough Jimmy’s & Joe’s to get us even into a conference tournament championship game. And I echo the sentiments about him being a likeable, affable guy who has graduated kids as well.

Oh no doubt. I’m thinking in terms of HS recruits who have stuck around for 4 years. Getting them here is one thing, having them be successful on & off the court for 4 years is entirely another. Not blaming Skerry for those cats transferring, but by the same token he can’t put them on his ledger as guys who stayed 4 years & were impact players. Not a low blow, just a fact.

I agree by and large with the last post. In terms of transfers, he hit it out of the park with Benimon; Moto was good, not great & Morman flamed out. McGlynn was ok (great FT shooter). Astroth was a miss & so was the big kid from Dayton. Ivory was a miss & Starr was meh. Early returns on Howard & Sanders are disappointing, but the jury is still out on them. HS kids-Morsell & JD were very good. Other than that, I don’t think there has been much success, on the basketball side of things. Obviously, this year’s batch of freshman remains to be seen. This is a lost season, in terms of W-L record. I think next year could be a fork in the road season; if we’re bad again, I hope the AD exercises the buyout option in the contract, assuming there is one, that is.
  5. I’m not a meteorologist but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Select last night. Actually, the online accuweather forecast for this Saturday is mostly cloudy with a few showers & a high of 51 degrees.

He’s won 20 or more games 3 years-2013 (25), 2015 (20) & 2016 (20). He’s never won more than 1 game in the CAA tournament & the biggest OOC win is Oregon State. No NIT or NCAA tournament appearances.

I posted the “plateaued” question, and got the resounding sound of crickets 🦗 chirping in response. I will therefore answer my own rhetorical question with an affirmative reply. I personally believe we have plateaued under Coach Skerry. This is his 8th season. Season one doesn’t really count (he inherited the ruins of the Pat Kennedy program). But the fact remains that this will be the 8th straight year we will not only not win the conference tournament, but not even have made it to the conference final.

It’s going to be interesting to see what home attendance is like this season. We really don’t have many home games, outside of conference games. I have my season tix & I’ll be there, but if the team continues to play this poorly, will SECU be a cavern? If so, would that even make a difference in terms of how the AD views Skerry’s future (again assuming there’s a buyout option in the contract).

Guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree, Tgr4life. As I previously suggested, if next year is another train wreck then I hope the AD pulls the plug...assuming there’s a buyout option in the contract. If there’s no such clause, you, I and everyone else clamoring for change are just emptying the ocean with an eye dropper

Absolutely. Circumstances (transfer of 2 best players, graduation of 3rd best player, influx of 8 new players-6 of whom never played 1 second of college ball before this season) mandate, whether we like it or not, a harsh reality-Coach K, Pat Riley & Phil Jackson combined couldn’t win here this season.
  11. I did derive pleasure out of the fact that some on the Delaware message board are whining about why, after they beat us, we’re getting a home game & they’re not only being sent on the road, but sent on the road to play JMU. Someone on their board predicted that the attendance for our game will be 2,800. I hope we win, in front of a larger crowd, & they get blown out.
  12. I hope we get more than 5K. Just noting the reality of events beyond our control (weather & thanksgiving weekend-which could also keep non-student fans away) is going to make having a good crowd a real challenge
  13. Students will still be on thanksgiving break & preliminary weather forecast includes possibility of rain. I hope I’m wrong, but I’m thinking it’ll be poorly attended. I still remember the 2013 playoff game vs Fordham. It didn’t rain & the attendance was 4,600. That game was played on 12/7, so it wasn’t thanksgiving weekend. I hope we launch an extensive marketing blitz for this game.

Today’s ugly loss to NDSU (story)

I hear ya down in the ATL, but this year the battle cry is truly “wait until next year.” We can only hope that this year’s batch of freshman (Dottin, Timberlake, Selcuk, Solomon & Betrand) start coming into their own next season. In the immortal words of the great Al McGuire, “the best thing about freshman is that they become sophomores.” Having said that, I think it’s fair to ask what did Skerry see in Howard & Sanders, 2 non-freshman transfers. I know 5 games is a small sample size, but it doesn’t appear Howard can shoot, which is generally a detriment for a basketball player (sarcasm intended). And Sanders is a turnover machine, who can’t shoot foul shots. Total free pass for Skerry this year. And I know about the 8 year extension. But what we don’t know is whether there is a buyout provision in the contract. If, in a worse case scenario, this year & next year are train wrecks (and I fervently hope that’s not the case) how long, rhetorically asking, can the AD go without pulling the chord?
  15. One of my concerns this Saturday is we can’t give up 70+ yd TD runs, like we did vs Maine & JMU. Also hoping Duquesne’s QB isn’t the mobile type. One way to keep our O at bay is to run the ball & keep them on the sidelines. Would also be nice not to give up huge chunk yardage pass plays. Guess I’m asking a lot of our D
  16. I’m convinced there are some people who if they saw a guy walking on water they’d say, “see, I told you he couldn’t swim.”
  17. They played a lot of weak teams. Beat up on a 2-9 DII team 45-0. Also defeated a 4-7 FCS team, as well as defeating two 2-9 FCS teams. By record, the best FCS team they played was Sacred Heart, who was 7-4. Duquesne beat them by 4 points. As you pointed out, they lost their 2 FBS games by a combined score of 105-36. In their 8 FCS games (against somewhat dubious competition) they averaged 32.8ppg, while giving up 24.6ppg. They shouldn’t be taken lightly, as they do have a 225 RB who ran for 1,300 yards, but, having said that, we should beat them.

MBB loses in a rout to FAU

Oh I don’t blame Skerry at all. I blame the Administration for offering that long of an extension.

MBB loses in a rout to FAU

I’m trying to look at the glass half full, but I certainly understand the frustration of those who are projecting this to be a 5 win season, give or take. The elephant in the room is that the transfer of ZM & Gorham set this program back at least 2 years in my estimation. Say what you want about ZM being a “me” guy, but he would have likely averaged 20+ppg this season, & Gorham might have been in the 12-14ppg range. As tempting as it is to kiss this season goodbye, we’re going to have to wait until we have some conference games under our belt to make any conclusions. Personally, I think the best we can hope for this season is that the experience gained will make us better next year. As for Skerry, his inability thus far to bring in a quality PG is disappointing, to say the least. Howard is only here through next season, & I don’t think he’s the answer in any event. Dottin does have strength and appears to have leadership skills, but I’m not sold on him as the long term guy either. I’d also like to see him recruit better pure shooters, a’ la guys at William & Mary, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s great that he graduates guys & has made us a fairly consistent 18+ win team, but I don’t think it’s unfair to demand that he also get us to a conference championship game eventually, and, dare I say it, even the big dance. He has a multi year contract (which I wouldn’t have given him) so he ain’t going anywhere. The question is “is the program going anywhere, or have we plateaud with this guy”?
  20. The good folks at herosports.com have us playing either Furman, Duquesne or Eastern Tenn. St in the 1st round. I’d attach the link, except I’m not sure how to 😳
  21. I don’t watch that schmuck. The only talking heads I watch are Wilbon & Kornheiser on PTI. IF we get in, do you think we get a home game or get sent on the road? Next weekend is thanksgiving; if we get a home game I’m concerned it’ll be a ghost town. Certainly won’t be any students in attendance. There were more JMU fans (and louder) than our student section today
  22. It would be fitting if MBB beat NDSU on selection Sunday. Btw, did anyone notice that Citadel & Alabama were tied at 10 at the half. I would have loved to have heard Saban at halftime. Whatever he said worked, as Bama won the 2nd half 40-7
  23. It’s funny how fans are the same all over. I’ve been browsing the Delaware & Stony Brook message boards &, just as some on our board, there is a common thread of “we suck & don’t deserve to make the playoffs,” combined with “and even if we do, we’ll get rolled in the 1st round.” I should add there is a bit of an elitist attitude with some on the UD board, who subscribe to the belief that it would actually be an insult to get an at-large 7-4 bid, when UD used to breeze in when it was only a 16-team field.

    JMU Postgame

JMU is an elite FCS team-I believe they would be successful playing an entire FBS schedule. No shame in losing to them. And also doesn’t mean we shouldn’t make playoffs or, that if we do, we’re not capable of making some noise.

    JMU Postgame

We have a lot of work to do in the off-season on our D. I wonder if that might include a new coordinator. This isn’t rocket 🚀 science or brain 🧠 surgery. We need bigger, stronger, faster players. Up to the coaches to get them.
