    I’ll be there in person

    General MBB 2023-24 thread

I would say ask him about Tarke, but the response would likely be “we’re trying & it’s frustrating.” Would someone call the NCAA and tell them to wake up and do something, anything
  3. So, I’m driving yesterday when I get a phone call. I recognized the prefix (704) as being associated with TU, so I decide to answer. And who’s on the other end of the line but Charles Thompson, calling to thank me for being a season ticket holder, as part of a campaign where players are calling season ticket holders. We had a brief conversation and I must say he was extremely articulate and personable, and I came away thinking what an excellent ambassador he is not just for the team, but the university as well. I have no doubt he will be a success in whatever endeavors he pursues once he leaves TU
  4. We didn’t discuss his game. If he has developed a game facing the basket, that would be a bonus. I seem to recall him not being able to finish sometimes on gimmes, so if he can clean that up, that would also be a bonus
  5. I regret you are perpetually offended. I am offended by your insinuation. Actually, it’s not an insinuation, you’ve out & out labeled me. You don’t know me or anything about me. Frankly, your comments border on being libelous.
  6. I’m surprised you would even ask such a question, like all college students are per se articulate and personable. Do you teach college students, because I do. And I will tell you that some of them do not project as articulate and personable, perhaps owing to their being absorbed in their iPhones and social media. I meant my posting as a compliment to the young man I spoke to, and am baffled how anyone could deflect it the way you did
  7. Positives today ….NONE. Well, actually, I was able to zip out of my parking spot at the end of the game without encountering any traffic. I’m admittedly not good at estimating crowds, but there couldn’t have been more than maybe 200 students at the game. If they wouldn’t come out in this glorious weather today, I’m not sure they’re ever going to come out. Can someone please explain to me why, down 48-3, we kicked a FG. Was it because we only needed 14 more FG’s at that point to tie the game? Our backup QB must be really, really bad at football, if they wouldn’t even put him in at the end of the game today Last year we lost to DE 24-10. How did the talent gap between us & them widen in such a short time to the degree it manifested itself today? Let’s face it, they could have scored 70+ today if they had wanted to First season honeymoon is about to be over in a few weeks. This staff damn sure better bring in a boatload of talent (not just a bunch of slappies to fill up the roster) in the offseason, starting at QB Burn the film from today. Especially, the clown-like inability to pick up the ball (or at least fall on it) on the pooch kick in the first half I feel fortunate I got to watch Joe Montana in his prime today. Oh wait, being told that was just the DE QB (was this kid even their starter?). He started the game 16-16, before finally throwing an incomplete pass late in the 1st half. If they had wanted to thoroughly embarrass us (rather than merely embarrassing us) that kid might have shattered some NCAA records today Did I mention burn the film from today?
  8. From the looks of things today, I would have guessed he played last season for the Dolphins. As to why we couldn’t find a JUCO and/or portal guy to compete with last year’s 4th stringer, well, I’ve been asking that question since the beginning of the season. Frankly, I don’t think there’s a good answer

    NIL Challenge

So, I think anyone who reads my posts knows that I’m not a big fan of the changes that have taken place recently in college athletics (“not a big fan” is putting it mildly 😆). Notwithstanding, I recognize that these changes, including NIL, are likely here to stay. With this in mind, I just set up my contribution to Goh Collective, the TU NIL. I don’t hesitate to bitch & moan about MBB (and football) when I feel it’s warranted, but at the same time I want to put my $ where my mouth is. We’re never going to generate NIL revenue in the amounts the blue blood P5’s will, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be successful at our level, given the number of grads the University has pumped out, and will continue to pump out. At least now, when I gripe, I’m doing so as a stockholder 😆. Anyway, I’m curious to know if anyone else on the board has contributed (you needn’t disclose the amount). I’d also like to challenge those who haven’t, to do so. You don’t have to give until it hurts; a bunch of small-medium donations add up. Let’s face it, our ability to retain existing players, and attract new recruits & transfers is going to depend in a significant way on how much NIL money we can pony up. So, who else is in?

    General MBB 2023-24 thread

I’m admittedly a glass half empty guy, so I’m going to assume the NCAA denies his petition, until I see otherwise. Regardless of what the NCAA decides, it’s outrageous to let this kid twist in the wind like this. It’s not rocket science or brain surgery. Make a damn decision and be done with it. I needn’t point out how challenged to get W’s this team would be without Tarke, Watson and Conway.

    Football stuns No. 13 W&M 34-24

So, we should assume this is a typo, given your solicitude for the football program?🤔

    Football stuns No. 13 W&M 34-24

C’mon man, that’s weak. We just went on the road, against a ranked team, in front of the largest crowd in their history, spotted them a 17-point lead, and then ripped their hearts out with a stunning 34-0 run, and this snarky response is the best you can do? Would have been better if you just exercised your right to remain silent 🤫

    Football stuns No. 13 W&M 34-24

Extraordinary. We were getting clowned at the beginning of the game, and looked every bit the part of their homecoming patsy, until we weren’t. The 11 minute TD drive to start the 2nd half changed everything. But, IMHO, their fumbling the ensuing kickoff was the real momentum shifter. After that, Bill & Mary did zip on offense, save the garbage TD at the end. Really nice job running the ball, so kudos to the RB’s & the O-line, which kept Kent upright for the most part. Gotta love how the D played in the 2nd half, and a big assist to W&M, for frequently committing the dead from the neck up penalties we usually do. Kent isn’t the long term solution, but you can’t argue with his performance today. No INT’s & he made several plays with his legs. Meanwhile, Runyan has turned into the steal of the off-season & the go-to receiver. Our Travis Kelce, sans Kelce’s annoying lady love. I still find some of the Uber conservative play calling on offense maddening, but hey, if it results in outcomes like today, I’ll come to the dark side gladly.

    General MBB 2023-24 thread

If anything, the real questions are probably will he stick around to play next season (24-25) and/or will the coaching staff want him back in 24-25?

    2024 Football offers/commits

Caught 36 passes, over 2 seasons at Oregon State. Then transferred to Washington State, but never played there, due to some type of eligibility issue. Then off to JUCO this season

    2023 General Football News

What I’d be interested in knowing, to the extent such records are kept, is the other end of the spectrum, i.e., the FCS programs with the lowest attendance

    General MBB 2023-24 thread

Just a cautionary note-beware these preseason rankings. Nowadays with the portal, no one really knows how good a team is going to be before the season. In basketball, it only takes 1 or 2 guys to come in via the portal and make a significant impact. Didn’t we get picked pretty low in the preseason rankings two years ago, and then went on to win the regular season crown 👑?

    Football falls to Albany 24-17

Winning cures a lot of ills, but it goes deeper than that; a largely apathetic student body; a similarly apathetic alumni body (the number of engaged alum, compared to the number of total alum is minuscule I think); a surrounding community which really isn’t a college town, but more of a suburb, with sports allegiances to professional teams; and a deficient marketing strategy, to the extent a successful strategy is out there somewhere, waiting to be unearthed. Baby steps, I guess. Let’s become a consistent winner (not just outlier seasons here and there) and hopefully get attendance up to near 10K a game. I don’t have the stats in front of me, but what was our highest average attendance during the Ambrose era? I’m highly skeptical we’re ever going to get to a point of 15k or more a game & I’m equally skeptical FBS is viable, but I also don’t believe scrapping the program (or moving down) is the answer. It’s hard for me to imagine a university with 20K students not having a football program, and while I understand the dollars and cents argument, I’d like to think there are intangible benefits to having a football program

    Football falls to Albany 24-17

Never been there, but Albany is the capital of NY. As to the QB, we’d have to ask Ambrose whether he even recruited him and, if so, why he couldn’t snag him

    Football falls to Albany 24-17

X2. More than 1 can can be true at the same time-(1) it was time for a change; (2) the jury is still out on new guy. In fact, the jury hasn’t even begun its deliberations yet. Despite my doubts, I’m fairness this season is a free pass for him. The real test is going to be what he does in the offseason in terms of recruiting and the portal

    Football falls to Albany 24-17

Either Albany is vastly better than UNH, or last week’s offensive outburst was fool’s gold. I suspect a combo of the two. As I see it, this one’s on our coaching staff. Despite the inherent limitations of our QB, the only signs of life we showed on offense were through the air. Despite that, the offensive coordinator was obsessed with running the ball up the gut, which generally yielded oh, a yard or two, punctuated by the horrible play call on the goal line, to seal the L. This infuriating insistence to keep doing what wasn’t working also resulted in the injury to Hunter. Memo to O-coordinator: running your 5’4 RB up the gut on the goal line not only is unlikely to succeed, but it just might result in him getting injured. Hand-in-hand with the dreadful play calling is the ridiculous amount of personal fouls we’re committing on a weekly basis. Where’s the discipline? Do the players not fear any consequences from the coaching staff? Whoever the spitter is, he should be booted off the team. He’s not the only player who’s gone off the rails, but he’s the most egregious. We’re never going to build the fanbase with this unimaginative, undisciplined brand of football that we play at home. Oh well, at least we’ll always have Durham

    Albany Preview

O’s game at 1pm; Billy Joel at 7pm. We’ll lose some fans on both ends, although student attendance shouldn’t be impacted by either event I wouldn’t think

    2023 General Football News

We better start the GoFundMe 😆 Its going to take some highly motivated and well heeled donors to bite off that 5 million dollar fee, but I guess anything is possible. That door you just heard closing is Delaware leaving the CAA, as I have little doubt they can pony up the 5 million. Then, where does that leave us?

    2023 General Football News

If I’m reading this correctly, in addition to the prohibitive buy in fee, we would also have to have 16 different sports teams, and would have to offer 210 scholarships (over what period of time I’m not sure) which would have to cost 6 million dollars. Do we even have 16 different teams? Probably doesn’t matter, as I don’t see how we would pay the buy in fee. Perhaps I’m missing something, but it would appear we will be relegated to FCS in perpetuity, if this is enacted
