Skerry Era by the numbers, Part I

To discount the regular season, by arguing only the conference tournament matters, is to paint with too broad a brush, I think. The regular season is important, not only, as TU2012 points out, for seeding in the tournament, but it is also important in terms of fan support/revenue & recruiting.

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part I

The stats I posted are purely objective; they are, after all, the stats Skerry has accumulated. It is up to the reader to subjectivity interpret them as he or she wishes. I did not skew the stats in any way. In fact, I purposely left off year 1 of Skerry’s tenure in fairness to him. My interpretation of the numbers is as follows: Since year 2, Skerry’s avg record vs D1 opponents is 16-15; his record vs OOC opponents with winning records is I believe 10-27; his conference tournament record is 2-7. I have my own views as to what these numbers mean. You are free to have your own views as well.
  3. Since his 2nd season, 2012-13 (I’m throwing out his 1st season) Skerry has gone 42-40 vs OOC D1 opponents. Of those 42 W’s, only 10 of those opponents finished the season we beat them in with a winning record. The other 32 W’s were vs teams that finished the season we beat them with a losing record. Of the 40 OOC L’s, 27 were to teams that finished the season with winning records, while 13 of the L’s were to teams that finished with losing records. So, since 2012-13, we’ve gone 10-27 in OOC games vs winning teams, while going 32-13 in OOC games vs losing teams.

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part II

You’re saying we lost those games, where the opponent shot 43% or less, including a game where the opponent shot 29%?😡

    CAA semifinals

Over a quarter of a century. That is some serious futility

    CAA semifinals

Good research 2012. So, 2009 was the last year we won more than 1 game in the conference tournament. Long time between drinks

    CAA semifinals

No real upsets so far; Delaware beating W&M was a mild upset I suppose. Come to think of it, the CAA tournament usually holds to form. I can’t remember a low seed making a Cinderella run. I’m pulling for Hofstra & NE.

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part II

Biggest OOC W I suppose was beating Oregon State on the road in the Benimon era. I don’t think OSU was anything special that year. Also beat Vermont at home many years ago, & Temple, who only won 9 games that year. Also, beating Georgia Southern to win the tournament in Florida back in November 2017. All in all, a pretty “meh” lackluster resume of OOC W’s.

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part II

The numbers don’t lie. We’ve done poorly vs good OOC foes, while feasting on the lousy ones

    W&M going down?

We’re not getting a JWF, you’re right. But he better get a G who by his sophomore year can avg 15+ ppg.

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part I

If I get really ambitious & have time, I’ll do an analysis of how many of our OOC D1 W’s since 11-12 have been against teams with losing records, vs how many of our OOC D1 losses have been vs teams with winning records. My instinct might be totally wrong, but something tells me that the majority of our W’s have been vs crap foes, while we have a losing record vs teams that have finished with winning records

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part I

Facts are facts. I’m going to do Part II after the conference tournament, to show our pitiful record in conference tournaments play, compared to other teams in the conference, since the 11-12 season

    W&M going down?

He better. If not, we’ll remain a mediocre team

    W&M going down?

Hofstra always has great guards. Even with JWF gone, they’ll still have Pemberton, Ray (who really came on at the end of the year) & whoever they have coming in as a freshman. NE is always tough; I’m sure Coen will have a post-Puscia plan. JMU has Lewis & Banks; Drexel has all kinds of talent on O.... At the risk of stating the obvious, the other teams in the conference aren’t going to be be stagnant. We desperately need to bring in impact players with our remaining scholarships

    W&M going down?

They also have a transfer from High Point (Mutts) & another from Villanova (a big who didn’t get many minutes at Nova). I agree; Delaware is another preseason favorite.

    W&M going down?

Just looked it up; this is Coen’s 13th year at NE, so Skerry is the 3rd most tenured coach in the conference
  18. TSU88

    W&M going down?

Another year of futility under Shavers. He’s got to be the longest tenured coach in the conference. Is Skerry 2nd? The only one who I can think of that might have more time at his current school is Coen at NE. W&M may be too pretty, but our play is too ugly. I will say this: With all of their starters (presumably) coming back, I would make W&M the preseason favorites for next season

    W&M going down?

2nd memo to Skerry: watch Hofstra-JMU replay, where Hofstra’s 4 guards (JWF, Buie, Pemberton & Ray) scored 53 of their 76 points. Go get us some guards like Hofstra’s!!!

    W&M going down?

Memo to Skerry: watch replay of UD W today & go get us some guards like UD has!!!

    W&M going down?

So the record is clear, I’m not a W&M fan; I simply wish we’d recruit shooters, like they do. Here’s the real takeaway for us from the game-UD’s 3 guards (Allen, Anderson & Horton) went off for 64 of UD’s 85 points. WE NEED GUARDS WHO CAN SCORE

    W&M going down?

    W&M is out

Skerry Era by the numbers, Part I

Well, my point is that he’s really not getting that many W’s. If you threw out year 1. Since year 2, vs D1 teams, our average yearly record is 16-15. Then there’s the 22% winning % in CAA tournament play
  24. TSU88

    A few year-end stats

We tried 538 3-pointers & hit 177 of them (basically 33%). We took on average 17 3 point shots a game & hit 6 of them. Meanwhile, our opponents took 811 3’s & hit 286 (109 more than us) which is 35%. So, our opponents on average took 26 3’s & hit 9 of them. We had 310 assists to 373 turnovers. Our opponents had 457 assists to 316 turnovers. So, we had 10 assists per game to 12 turnovers. Our opponents had 15 assists per game to 10 turnovers.
  25. I like Gibson, the kid from Sidwell, & Jaylin Hunter, up in Connecticut. Also, Buckley, from NOVA (not Villanova, but N. Virginia). I seem to recall we’re looking at a few others too
