It’s not that the sky is falling. It’s that we can already see the writing on the wall. When your team of highly-experienced players open the season doing the same dumb things that closed last season, we know where this is headed. Meanwhile, teams like Hofstra and Charleston are picking up higher-class wins that we can only dream about. Then looking across the landscape of college hoops, you see teams like Le Moyne and Colgate nearly beating Syracuse in the Dome. How close you think we get to them there? As I said after the SMC game, the media types who picked us first will be looking for a do-over by Xmas if they’re not already.

Hofstra picked off Seton Hall last night in a Stone Age game. But, they got something that we fail to do every damn year - a win against a ‘name’ team, even if Seton Hall is gonna be a bit down.

MBB fouls out against South Carolina 80-54
Chris Datres replied to mat1992's topic in Tiger Basketball
It's absurd to me that a decision about redshirting in basketball comes before the season. If a player decided that without injuries being a reason, you might as well just tell the world that you're not good enough to play at this level. If a coach decided that, it's basically telling the player to head for the portal. I did not get to see any of last night's debacle and it looks like I'm better off for having not seen it. When I saw the score and saw we were down 20, it felt like more of the same. Other mid majors are going on the road and knocking off big-name teams or at least dragging them into the mud into the last minutes of the game. We come in, take our check, and give the home fans what they want. More of the same over and over and over again. With a young squad, I could be patient with their progress. There's far too much experience on this team to be laying eggs like what we've seen against St. Mary's and South Carolina. -
Yayyyyy...another frickin moral victory. This game's result was not in doubt from the 5:00 mark of the first half on. For a team that has all this experience, they still do the same dumb crap that will prevent them from getting over the top. The offense is hot garbage with all this iso crap and hardly any ball movement. It's amazing to me that we had more assists than SMC did because it seemed all we did was drive into the lane and hope for the best. Free throws, what a surprise, still terrible. Do these guys even bother practicing them? If you're gonna chuck from 3, you better be 75% from the free throw line MINIMUM. The only improved player I saw out there tonight was Lowery on the offensive end. It looks like he's worked on a lot of his flaws from last year at that end and his length is going to be very advantageous when getting to the rack. Samb & Embeya look like projects on the block but in the Skerry mold of defense first and maybe they can luck their way into a couple of dunks. Defensively, they figured something out in the 2nd half plus SMC wasn't hitting much from the outside. I had forgotten about Saxen and when I saw him, I figured he'd tear us apart. Then they bring in that sequoia off the bench and they should have ruled the paint. But Jones did a really nice job on them defensively and the guards helped out just enough to be able to get out on the guards. The fouls, though, geez, gotta stop with those. Way too much to start the game. But we do all that work to cut it to 6 and have a ton of momentum and Tejada has to play heroball and throw up some garbage fadeaway 3 that is an airball. Then we get it to 4 with the ball and Tejada tosses up some silly stuff in the lane, SMC goes down and scores on a putback and we're not getting any closer again. You played in enough close games last year that you should know how to handle them but yet again, we crap ourselves when the going gets tough against a decent team. When you have this much experience, you shouldn't be making the same mistakes you made all of last season. And after what I saw today, all of those who think we're finishing better than Charleston may want to ask for a do-over.

Brzovic might put up 40 on us this year. Doubtful we have anyone that can match up with him on defense.

Kudos to the defense and the staff on that side of the ball for making all the adjustments necessary after that dog of a game against SB and holding the #1 offense in 1-AA to 14 points. Never in my wildest dreams (and bets) did I think that was going to be possible.

Perhaps we dodged a bullet with this one... https://x.com/RoccoMiller8/status/1848450719491236303

East Carolina's job just opened up.

We can have peak Grant Enders throwing to peak Mark Orlando and it's not going to make one bit of difference against Monmouth or anyone else unless the defense gets their crap together. That was disgusting today and it's almost like the prep coming in ignored the fact that Stony Brook knew how to use the forward pass. Oh, they're primarily a running team. Well yeah, those 5 yard hitches looked like elongated handoffs with how easy our 'defense' made it for them. But we've seen the incapability of this defense for virtually the entire season. It was non-existent in the Cincy & NDSU games. If Morgan was competent, they'd have beaten us. W&M didn't figure out until it was too late that they could have thrown all day on us (plus they shot themselves in the foot with turnovers). It's the same thing over and over in this program with the terrible pass defenses and lack of an attacking scheme. Yes, that has something to do with the players in place and it'll take at least one more recruiting cycle to filter out the muck. But a decent DC should be able to come up with SOMETHING with marginal talent. Add in the horrific tackling and the never-ending stupid penalties and I wonder just how much this staff cares about discipline and the margins.

Runyon, Greene lead Football over Norfolk State 28-23

Ask Miami how well that end-of-game strategy worked last year vs GA Tech. -
Runyon, Greene lead Football over Norfolk State 28-23

Just remember what part of the game of football is nowadays -- arrogant OCs who are hellbent on making sure that their ball plays are gonna work regardless of what's been working throughout the game. You're in your 4-minute offense and Norfolk's D is gassed so you pound your big backs and chew up yardage and clock. You also make sure that you don't snap the ball with more than 10 on the play clock. I thought Spiro was tripping when he called that 3rd INT...like, wtf are we throwing the ball in that situation? And again, penalties still haven't been cleaned up. Little things like this on the fringes are what separate a playoff team from a team regrouping in December. As it is, we'll take the W and move on to next week. But they can feel free to play their best game of the season next week and make things a little easier on everyone. -
Game was the free one on the Flo Youtube channel and it was a rough watch. A lot of errors and the hitting percentage was abysmal. We barely held a lead in any of the 3 games. It looks as if the rest of the conference has caught up to us and we've certainly taken a step back with graduation and departures. Get the split today.

Gordy was all over this one and while the 2:00 timeout is a new thing for all of these college coaches, it's something that has to be required knowledge in these late-game situations. But as we've seen all across the country, clock management and smarts...stand by...there's been a buzz for review...ok, play stands as called...isn't always the highest on the list of priorities for a lot of these guys. The ground attack was probably the most impressive part of this win. Greene got the hard yards when needed, especially on the final possession. Defensively, causing turnovers will always change the tide but again, the penalties are still a problem and I would have hoped....hang on....we have another review...nope, not targeting...this would have been ironed out during the bye week. But for the first time in a while, it seems like we have the type of offense that makes games fun again and we're gonna need to stuff the scoreboard against a lot of these conference foes are on the schedule.

I think they're pretty sophomoric for a college to do that. What's next, an Otto the Orange on the side of a Syracuse helmet? The Stanford Tree with the googly eyes on the side of their helmet? But I guess if they can somehow sell merchandise tied to it, it'll somehow be a win.

I can never understand how year after year, our special teams is an abomination. A blocked punt and a PR TD allowed plus if the NDSU holder fields the snap cleanly, he walks into the endzone on the fake FG. It's not a question of if but when a special teams gaffe is going to cost us. And it happens year after year after year after year. I only saw the first half so my view of the game is going to be skewed. Seeing Davis for the first time, I think he's got dynamic potential but as Mat said, he's inconsistent. That first drive, he puts more air on the ball on the scramble drill and he's got a wide open TD (fortunate it wasn't picked). A couple of times after executing the play fake, he had wide lanes of running room to his right but he refused to pull it and take off. That takes awareness and he wasn't showing much in the first half. I guess the 2nd half was encouraging other than the defense's ability to get off the field, another something that has plagued us over the last number of years.

Make the f'ing play. Know the snap count. Catch the damn ball. Play your position. Stop committing penalties. Coaches can only do so much with the scheme. They were in position to win the game and the players burped it up again. And just once I'd like to see a Towson football team that isn't cut down by their special teams play. Every single year it seems that some aspect of special teams hamstrings our season's progress. You have one damn job as a kicker and if you're on scholarship, you'd better do that job. If the snap is bad or the hold is bad, you get a pass. It didn't look like that on the final play. EXECUTE PROPERLY

Third and Fourth Summer Practice Updates
Chris Datres replied to mat1992's topic in Tiger Basketball
Would you say that Lowery is cut from a similar cloth as Guthrie was? -
If most of the rest of the country was any indication, Week 2 was a week where teams had to do a little bit extra to get their bearings underneath them. Look at all the home teams that struggled or even lost to what would be considered lesser competition -- Penn State, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida State, Notre Dame, and so on. Everyone was so hyped up to get their season underway in week 1 and then they come back in week 2 and it's a bit of a letdown. From my ear's standpoint, it seemed like the penalties were the biggest issue with us last night. Gotta get the discipline ironed out. I know we put a lot of trust in the offensive line in those short yardage situations but what if there was a little trickery involved and had a bootleg/tight end option when everyone thinks the dive play is gonna get run? The biggest encouragement comes from the defense's effort. Other than that long TD run to start the 2nd half, they kept things under control and had to come up big when the offense couldn't muster anything. Now if we can just keep those injuries at bay...

Solid comeback from down 2-1 to whack Lehigh tonight.

Looks like we're going to LeBron's alma mater for a game against Duquesne, who is coached by LeBron's buddy. https://x.com/RoccoMiller8/status/1823470201259893129

Did we anger the scheduling office that they gave us Charleston and UNCW as road games only? Probably a back-to-back trip too. At least we don’t have to go to Hofstra.
-
Turned us down? They scared or did we ask for too much money? One group I'm largely disappointed with is the A-10 schools. We've had UMASS, Temple, GW do home-and-homes (or 2-for-1's in Temple's case) in the past. What's wrong with Mason, VCU, St. Joe's, and teams like that? It keeps costs down since it's regional and it's a similar game to what you'd find in your conference. There are so many teams and coaches running scared and I get that they're also trying to maintain a bottom line but where does it help your team and build your fanbase by playing Directional State A&M versus playing someone like us?
-
I'd rather try to schedule a terrible D1 program than have to schedule a D3 program. I would hope our marketing department will do something similar with the elementary schools that they did with last season's D3 game so there can be some semblance of a crowd that day.
-
Who or what has been the cause of the beef between us and Loyola? The Hounds released their schedule and they've got Lancaster Bible on there as their 2nd game of the season. I get that there wouldn't be a home-and-home series in season with them but doing a constant home-and-home with them would at least check one home game box for each side every other year. It's also kind of absurd that two schools that close in proximity don't play each other anymore.
-
That's a good get to have JMU for a home-and-home. I'm sure they're as strapped as we are to get opponents to schedule them. That Bryant game will be a nice one to attend over Xmas.
