MLax Thread 2024

A few things happened in this game as Towson goes 1-0 in the CAA with this win. Final score: Towson 16-Drexel 11

*Towson went zone and late in the third quarter. Probably should have gone to it sooner, but the Dragons took advantage of their quickness against our slower defensemen and SSM Ray Glass.

*Luke Downs (5 saves) had a rough day and then was injured in the fourth quarter. Took a shot to the shin. R-freshman Matt Nilan came in and made two saves.

*Towson was sloppy on offense with 15 turnovers, but did cause 17.

*Decent on face-offs winning 17 of 30, but Matt C. and Rocco Moreno had some big face-off wins to keep the scoring going.

Webber with 5 goals and 1 assist for a career day

Chop with 2 goals and 2 assists.

Nick D. with 1 goal and 4 assists

Mikey with a quiet day with 1g, 3 assists on 7 shots

Villagomez 2 goals but I had him for at least 3 turnovers, but for some reason they had him for one.

Roussel with 3 goals.

So there could be a few changes after this game

*Roussel has to be on the field more. Mauer had some chances at the doorstep today and couldn't knock them in. He's been productive, but Roussel is so quick and has made a huge jump in play. Problem is that they don't seem to have a guy ready to jump on the second unit with Duccomun and Gaskins.

*Goaltending. It was a rough day for Downs. I don't he played that well last week, but it was Virginia. If he's injured, Nilan looks ready in a very small sample size. But if he's back and struggles again, Nads has to make the switch. Nilan is 6-2, 190. Crowds the cage. He looked confident as hell in the cage.

*Defense was really poor, giving up way too many open shots. Communication shouldn't be a huge issue by now. Slides were late. Then they went zone and Drexel only scored a goal or two against it in over a quarter of play. Not saying to go zone the rest of the way. They do have to look at a couple of positions there. Maybe one on close D and Glass busts his ass, but they took advantage of his lack of size.

Good win after a bad start, being down 4-1. The offense is so much different than last season, especially when they move the ball. DeMaio has taken his game to another level. Roussel is also capable of 20g, 20a. A lot of weapons and fun to watch a team put up 15+ goals every week.

Best thing that happened to us was Downs taking a ball off the shin. He had been bad and Nolan made the most of his chance. I especially like his quick release on clears.

It's 8-8 at the half at Fairfield. Ugly, windy and rain. The play is ugly. Nilan got the start in net and he hasn't been very good. Just three saves and the same with the Fairfield goaltender. Same defensive mistakes over and over, but at some point, you have to make saves on those long shots. Face-offs have been bad as Matt C. for some reason, has taken all 18 face-offs and won just 8. So they were unable to go on any runs because he lost 5 or 6 face-offs in a row at one point in the second quarter. Yet Nads never went to Rocco Mareno, has face off 3-4 times per game. Then you have two timeouts and he doesn't take one until about 35 seconds left and Webber loses the ball as he tries to one-time it from 10 yards out. Mikey W. with 3 goals, though one was a lucky goal on a pass. Eight turnovers for both team though understandably in that slop. Gasikins (1g) and Ducommun (2g) has provided a boost from the second midfield. It seems like the turf has slowed down the Webbers and Roussel's of the world, who can't seem to beat anybody.

Ugly wins are better than pretty losses. We'll take it 12-10 on the road in ugly, rainy conditions. Nilan struggled in the first half, but allowed just two goals in the second half. Fairfield with 19 turnovers, Towson with 16. The game changed late in the third quarter when Roussel finally went back to attack and they put him behind the goal. He found Villagomez for the layup and then he scored himself. Fairfield never recovered.

Nilan had seven saves, most of them off his body. Not sure he's the answer, but defense also has to improve whomever is in net. Matt C. just 50% on face-offs, but won a few big ones in the second half. Fairfield and the rain held DeMaio to just 2 assists, Mikey W. with 3g, Villagomez with 2g, Webber 1, Mauer 1g, Chop 1, 2a, Duccomon 2g.

Mike Preston's column in The Sun. Some quotes

https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/03/30/mike-preston-towson-mens-lacrosse-stony-brook/

“It’s not that we played well, but we played well enough to win,” Nadelen said. “Shot selection, shot location, we were a little selfish at times. We just weren’t grooving on offense as much as we have as far as moving off the ball, moving the ball and being aggressive with our dodges.”

“Their goalie was good but we didn’t challenge him enough,” Nadelen said. “When we did, we got some good looks. We had some opportunities with some of our offensive sets to force them to slide, but we didn’t have enough recognition. But when we did, we had some good looks. We lacked some aggressiveness at times, but we did show poise at the end.”
