Top 10 Defensive Ends/EDGE

Recommended Posts

Towson had a few great pass rushers in D2 including Bobby Poist (1980-83), who is second all-time with 31 sacks. It took awhile to find stud pass rushers from the outside. But in this list, I've realized that playing the run is also important along with conference accolades, All-American honors and playing career in the pros.

1)Frank Beltre (2009-12). Complete lineman who ended his career as a third-team All-American in 2012. Was first-team All-CAA in 2012 and 2011 and third team in 2010. Finished with 232 tackles. Had long career in the CFL. Had 38 tackles for loss and 11 sacks in his career. Future HOFer.

2)Ryan Delaire (2013-14). Tough call here. Thought about naming him first, but Beltre was the key cog in that 2011 playoff team and was a bit better all-around. Transfer from UMass who recorded 22.5 sacks in two seasons and finished fourth all-time.  Second-team All-American in 2014 and third-team in 2013. Big and fast, wound up with the Carolina Panthers and lasted four years in the NFL. Went undrafted and wound up playing for two years and spent time with various teams on the practice squad.

3)Andrew Hollingsworth (1997-2000). Hall of Famer who had a spectacular 2000 season that saw him record a school-record 18 sacks. "Hog" is the all-time sack leader by a wide margin with 43 sacks. Was named first-team All-American in 2000. First-team All-PL in 2000 and 1999. PL Defensive Player of the Year and Overall Player of the Year in 2000. Third-team All-American in 1999.

4)Rob Stanavitch (1992-93). Transfer from Nassau C.C. who had 20 sacks in two seasons against pretty good competition. Had a great season in 1993 with 16 sacks. Had 95 tackles in two seasons. At 6-3, 270, had great size and knew how to use it.

5)Steven Nance (2000-03). Tied for fifth all-time with 20 sacks.  Earned second-team PL honors in 2003.  Not big at 6-2, 240 so he has to use his speed. Finished with 141 tackles and 7 pass breakups.

6)Romale Tucker (2009-12). Rangy outside linebacker/defensive end who was named second-team All-CAA in 2012. Third on the team in tackles in 2011 with 73 and led all defensive linemen in the CAA in tackles. Had nine sacks in his career and 201 tackles overall.

7)Eric Erhardt (1995-98). Tied for eighth all-time with 18 sacks. Four-year starter. Had 55 tackles, 11 TFLs and four sacks in 1997. As a senior, had 47 takes and four sacks. Best year was when he was a sophomore, with 58 tackles and three sacks. Recorded seven sacks as a freshman in 1995.

8)Jason Troilo (2000-03). Undersized at 6-0, 230, but played with heart. Earned second-team All-PL honors in 2003 along with Nance. Had six sacks and 45 tackles that year. Finished with 103 tackles, 13 sacks and four fumble recoveries in his career.

9)Carlos Allen (2003-06). This is where it gets tough because Carlos Allen was a solid DE for about 2.5 years and then moved inside to defensive tackle. Had 114 tackles, 11 TFLs and four sacks in his first three seasons mainly at end.

10)Bryce Carter (2016-19). Redshirted in 2016. Left program in 2020 for JMU. Felt like he did enough in three seasons to warrant being on here. Had 15 sacks. Was named Honorable Mention Preseason CAA team. Had 144 tackles and 34 tackles for loss. If they were keeping that stat in a top 10 list, my guess he would be top 5 of all time.

Scott Tull was pretty good on the '93/'94 teams -- tall and rangy, he was around the QB a lot.

Last spot. Considered him and Bryce Carter.
