Big slate of games today

Recommended Posts

W&M vs Elon; Hofstra vs C of C; NE vs De.

We need to handle our own business, but by my way of thinking, I’d like to see Elon, C of C & De win. Were that to play out, every team in the conference would have at least 3 losses and we’d be in a mathematical tie for 1st, assuming we get a W tonight.

This is where I miss the old tv package of CAA games. Would have been fun to have watched a doubleheader today.

I don't see Hofstra winning on the road, but if that happens, they are the team to beat. They have the guards and the rebounding. Defense still shaky but they aren't terrible. If they stick to zone, it protects the fact they have no real shotblockers or rim protectors in the paint.

Notwithstanding the talented bigs in the conference (Brantley, Cacock, Knight) Wright-Foreman of Hofstra is the one player who can single handedly win a game. He’s a scoring machine & virtually unstoppable. I hope he goes the graduate transfer route after this season, or just leaves & turns pro.

Check out the last two games. Wright-Foreman has scored 20 and 15 points and they've still won because their other two guards have stepped up. I like the fact that he's a willing passer and not just a shot chucker. Look back at that last 3-pointer against us and he could have easily thrown up a 40-footer. Instead, he made the extra pass knowing the exact time on the clock for the easier 3 pointer. Amazing that he's only shooting 33.5% from 3, but made 6 of 11 against us.

You have a point. Pemberton is no slouch himself.

That loss to them still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Up by 10, at home, late in the game. Then they turn the ball over 2X at the end, we have the ball with 17 seconds left. We’d be 5-2 in conference. Freaking galling!!!

Horrible loss but I've moved on after the W&M win. I hate to point out one player but we turned it over 3 straight times after getting a 10-point lead and Zane had two. Then Zane misses two free throws late in the game. Starr made 2 and when you look back at Starr taking that last shot, it was a bad shot because he was 5 feet behind the line and left too much time on the clock. But he's shooting well over 40% from 3 this season.  I think Starr is shooting around 84% from the line and he's become the guy you want shooting late FTs. Everybody else is shaky.

You can make an argument (a strong one I believe) that Starr is the key player. When he plays well, our chances of winning are high. When he throws in a clunker, we’re in trouble.

I love Zane’s game-confident, scorer’s mentality. But if there’s one area he could fine tune it would be cutting down on the turnovers.

And NE won, to go 6-2. I’m still not buying them, yet. Against Hofstra, Elon, C of C & W&M they’re 2-2. The rest of their wins are against 2nd-tier foes.

So, if Elon beats W&M tonight, NE sits alone in 1st.
