May leads MBB over W&M 61-52

Christian May scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting (3-5 3pt) to lead Towson (9-4 CAA) over William & Mary (3-10) from Kaplan Arena on Thursday night from Williamsburg. Towson went back to their old starting lineup, inserting May and Nendah Tarke back in the lineup and benching freshmen Tyler Tejada and Mekhi Lowery. It worked to the extent that the Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 start, but fell into a deep slump and the Tribe tied it a 14-all. It went back-and-forth in an ugly first half where Towson led 27-26 after the half.

Towson never quite pulled away but did have an 11-point lead late in the game, but the free throw shooting woes crept back again as Charles Thompson and Tomiwa Sulaiman missed front end of one-and-ones. The Tigers shot just 10-of-19 from the line, 49% from the field and 5 of 12 from the 3-point line. Towson was also sloppy with the ball with 13 turnovers (May had five). But defensively, they were sharp, holding the Tribe to 30% shooting from the field and 6 of 33 (18.2%) from beyond the arc. Thompson contributed 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Towson outrebounded W&M 42-35, but allowed 17 offensive rebounds with many coming late in the game when the Tribe were attempting to come back.

Here is Skerry in the postgame on TowsonTigers.com

"We always say that road games are like gold. Didn't like the last minute. We were good from the 10 minute mark and one. Proud of Christian May. Defense was really good. Some big shots. Charlie was a beast. Five assists. Tomiwa gave us 10 and 8. Different guys, different nights. You have to find a way to get over the hump."

"There are all hard games. Our guys showed really good toughness. We were sharp early and I give Conway and Auslander gameplan together. Our critics  (this board?). We changed our ballscreen coverage for the entire game. They kept them off kilter."

Our critics

I didn’t realize Skerry had any critics. Would any Skerry critics please stand up

Well, a W is a W is a W. No style points, but it beats losing. For whatever the reason, we simply can’t score in conference road games. Only 1 game over 67 points, which was ironically vs C of C.

Given the conspicuous limitations this team has in terms of talent, it’s actually quite remarkable we’re currently in 3rd place.

On to Hampton Saturday, to play the 0-13 Pirates. Talk about your potential trap games.

Here is the Good, Bad, and Ugly. This game was unwatchable at times. Both teams were bad and the Tribe played Charleston tight. We either played down to their level or we're just not as good as we showed against Charleston on the road or UNCW at home.

Good

*May finally caught fire in the second half, hitting a few threes from his favorite corner and nailing a nice mid-range pull up. Maybe putting him back in the lineup helped, though it took him awhile to get going.

*Back to the old starting lineup of Tarke, Thompson, Jones, May and Tejada. Started out 12-0 and then went into a very long drought.

*Thompson passed the ball very well (5 assists). Had 11 points and 12 rebs.

*Defense was strong and as Pat mentioned that they changed the ball-screen coverage

*Delaware and Hofstra lost tonight to Towson moves into 3rd place in the CAA.

Bad

*May had five turnovers. When he tries to put the ball in traffic, he's in trouble. When he moves without the ball and cuts to the basket without it, he can score.

*Charles had 11 points, but should have had around 16 as he went 3 of 7 from the line and 4 of 9 from the field, missing numerous bunnies. Also, nearly picked up another flagrant foul.

*Offense was pathetic at times. Very sloppy which is normally not us (13 turnovers). We miss shots, but normally don't turn it over that much. But we shot well (49%). The turnovers and free throw shooting (10-of-19) with several missed one-and-ones down the stretch were troubling.

*Tejada? Hello? I know he's not a great defender or rebounder. But he's a decent FT shooter at 80.4%

Ugly

*The game. It was painful to watch at times.

Critics?! Lmfao Exactly. Free pass after free pass. One of, If not the best job in the country.
15-10 and 1 win away for. A winning season aka the ultimate goal for most.

Burn the tape. Zero effort tonight. Couldn’t defend or rebound. Thank god tribe missed pretty much every wide open shot. If we can grind out a win Saturday. It makes for a big final home stand.

good: Charles passing and no injuries?

Good

Unfortunately, I’m of the mind that C of C & UNCW were outliers. But, not to be accused of being a gloomy Gus, if we beat Hampton Saturday we’ll return to the friendly confines of TU arena 10-4 in conference, with 2 huge final home games vs Monmouth & C of C

You’reToo kind. Defense good?  End result yes but we allowed too many open shots both close and far, didn’t rebound and fouled too much. Luckily it was wm and not a top 10 team In the league.

After tonight, this flawed team is 9-4 and in third place in the CAA behind UNCW 10-3 and Charleston 10-3 and tied with Drexel. One game up on Hofstra and Delaware, who fell to 8-5.

Wonder how he'd respond to his critics about his substitution patterns.  You sprint out of the gates with a 12-0 lead and all the points come from the paint.  WM calls timeout to regroup and we come out of the timeout with a new lineup and everything stagnates.  Why??  Drill the F out of them with the starters and then work in the bench.  Just mind boggling why we'd change what works, especially after having so many sleepy starts.

As 88 said, it's remarkable that we're in 3rd place given how ragged this team plays and how disjointed we are at times.

Whatever. We held them to 30%, so it should have been 40%? WTF are you watching? They aren't very good but our defense was good. Yeah, that's the end result to hold teams under 60 points and under 40% from the field. Nobody is f-ing perfect. We gave up a few layups on miscommunication.
