The Early List

Recommended Posts

This is all speculative. Too early to see where this is heading in terms of candidates.

Look at where these FCS head coaches come from. I took the CAA for example. Since the $$$ will be available and we play well (my guess is at least $400,000), we can also get a current FCS coach. Tough to get an FBS coordinator unless it's Group of Five, since the P5 guys are making high six figures and low 7s.

Colonial Athletic Association
Albany Great Danes    Greg Gattuso    2014    Maryland assistant head coach & defensive line coach (2012-2013)
Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens    Ryan Carty    2022    Sam Houston State offensive coordinator & quarterbacks coach (2018-2021)

Hampton Pirates    Robert Prunty    2018    East Carolina defensive coordinator & defensive line coach (2017)
Maine Black Bears    Jordan Stevens    2022    Yale assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator & defensive line coach (2019-2021)
Monmouth Hawks    Kevin Callahan    1992    Colgate assistant head coach & defensive coordinator (1991)
New Hampshire Wildcats    Ricky Santos    2022    New Hampshire associate head coach & quarterbacks coach (2020-2021)

Definitely not the worst thing to look at a JMU assistant. Also have to assume Steve is going to look at a current or former South Carolina football coach though he was more involved with football.

Totally understand that Towson AD can lean on his connections at South Carolina but to your previous point, I think it would be a tough sell for an assistant coach in the SEC to make the move to Towson.  SEC money is really, really good, even for assistants and SEC assistants generally hold out for better opportunities than what they would most likely consider Towson to be.

The more I think about it, the more I believe Towson MUST secure a coach with a proven track record of winning.  Can't take a chance on an unproven head coach. TU is at a crossroads with its program and needs to get the closest thing to a sure thing.  That's why I'm intrigued by the Slippery Rock head coach, Shawn Lutz, as a prospect......or someone with a similar resume as his.

We can't expect a coaching staff to teach our players how to win if they haven't won themselves as coaches.

Most coaches get their start somewhere. Towson is going to pay as well as almost any FCS program and better than some mid major FBS programs. I’m not into getting D3 and D2 coaches.

All fair points.  For the record, Bob Chesney himself came to Holy Cross from where?.......DII Assumption.  We should explore ALL options regardless of level.  Let's just be sure to get ourselves someone who knows how to win football games.

Right and Towson is a step up in salary and status especially when it comes to the conferences.
