MBB falls at Clemson 80-75

Recommended Posts

Ugh, just another game where Towson was thisclose to beating a Power 5 team.  I don't care if it is from a middling P5 team.  Remember how happy we were when we beat Oregon State?  Frustrating, you get over the hump in this type of game it garners momentum to help you get over the hump in March.

Well our Net Rating would have gone sky high and what does that mean? A higher seed if you win the CAA Tournament and we basically had to go undefeated in non conference play and lose only a few games in conference to be considered for an at large.

But I never understand all the BS about these games don’t matter. A win over an ACC school on the road would have gotten us huge publicity even if it’s just social media. Alums who don’t care would wake up and notice. Outside of winning a CAA Tournament this would have a big feather in our cap. Great for the conference as well.

Sure, I suppose the Net Rating thing is a valid point but for a program that hasn't made the tournament since *1991* maybe we should pump the brakes on pondering how our Net Rating is going to impact our tourney seed.  Let's see if Pat can finally prove that he can even get us in as just a 16 seed before we start debating our merits for being a higher seed.

I honestly don't know how much a win over Clemson would have roused the sleepy TU fan base.  They're certainly a solid squad this year but they've been a bit of an up & down program over the years and it's still undoubtedly a "football school".  It would take an upset win over a UVA, UNC or other blue-blood basketball school for it to truly fire up the passive TU fans.

3 games left and I believe we can go 2-1 although yes Bryant beat Syracuse and N Iowa is a neutral court game and be nice to have Hicks back in time to help guard Bowen Born.
10 wins in the non conference.

Of course I wanted to beat Clemson last night.
We still have yet to play an entire 40 minutes of solid smart basketball.   May never see it but I’ll take 35+ minutes if we can win the CAA.

Stay positive and embrace this group of players.   The effort is there.  From day one they said it’s the dance or bust.

Beating Clemson on the road in a tv matchup doesn’t matter?!  What?!? Of course it does. Clemson isn’t duke but they aren’t BC.

This would have been huge publicity (you know the kind we were receding a few weeks ago until Charleston stole it). A win would have put us in position to get an at large at the end of the season. Would that have been likely? Probably not but if we went 31-3 with say a loss at Charleston and In the caa final, there would be a good case.

But we pissed away another good opportunity. Second half leads at Pitt, bc, Clemson, Ohio state and Maryland. It would be nice to win one of those once in a while

I know that beating a team from the big, bad ACC would have been a feather in our cap and would have been a notable win on Skerry's resume but ultimately this game means absolutely nothing.  We could have beaten them by 20 and it would have made ZERO difference come March.  For all intents & purposes there's no difference if Towson plays Clemson or if Towson plays FDU, Holy Cross or Mercer as our entry into the NCAA Tournament isn't determined by strength of schedule or "quality wins" with no At-large bids in the CAA.  Please also note that I'm not throwing shade at any of those other schools I just mentioned as they've all had more success reaching the NCAA Tournament in recent years than our Skerry-led Tigers.  To scrutinize or agonize over an early season non-conference game seems like a waste of time.  It all boils down to 3 days in early March.

Just. Win. The. Conference. Tournament.

I could not agree more.....I got destroyed for saying this last year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are my new hero!

Game is at 4.

The Ravens game will go longer than 4 because it'll be a 0-0 defensive struggle into overtime

Man it would’ve been cool to get this one but we just didn’t make plays down the stretch. The Conway charge play was super close. I wish he was more aggressive and just tried to finish.
Agree with the late game mistakes that can’t happen.  But I did like that they weren’t due to a lack of hustle.

I know PS was upset that some of the bench guys didn’t play well but I thought Paar was really good off the bench and this is the exact game we need him for. Charles’ limited minutes (specifically 2H) are what we can’t have happen against an all-conference big man.
In the grand scheme, this game doesn’t matter at all. My big takeaway is we are getting better since the start of the non-conf. This team has looked uninterested in previous games and I felt like this was one that they knew the lights were on and wanted to play well. Not necessarily the best thing but may be true.
The one positive of the injuries is that we get to see Conway work though his mistakes and get minutes instead of getting benched. I feel like he’s been getting better every game and will be a real piece come march.
Conference play is around the corner and I feel like it’s a 2 horse race. 12/31 will be circled on the calendar and we will know what this team is made of right before the ball drops.

Just a couple of thoughts.

I agree that the team does seem to be getting better. That is what the "regular" season is all about. Getting ready for the 3 days that matter....in march. Being upset because the bench guys did not play well....THAT IS WHY THEY ARE BENCH GUYS! There have been previous years where we had very good abilities, but did not win or get to championship game. Perhaps this team is different, but again, it all comes down to March. The life of a mediocre conference is sometimes hard to accept, but the facts are staring you in the face. Win the tournament or go home (maybe the NIT.....if you have an outstanding regular season). the rest are just for show.
